Awesome movie, great price.. not sure if its the lowest its ever been.

Aliens 4k is also $32.. not as good as the $26 it was going for during primeday sale.

https://www.amazon.com.au/Aliens-Ultra-Blu-ray-Region-Free/d…

I think this is the $26 Aliens 4k ( Was: $43.33 ) and its listed as the Blu-ray 3-Disc Version so pretty sure its a typo for the 4k

Is this the release where they used AI to upscale and it looks godawful?

    • Yes.

    • +4

Its the AI upscaling tech developed in New Zealand to help restore old footage.. James used it to remove all film grain for Aliens, True lies and The Abyss… All 3 movies have more detail vs the Bluray versions and even if they are not perfect ( waxy faces) they do infact look better overall (True lies and Abyss never had old Bluray releases)

I can see more detail in aliens 4k vs aliens Blueray.. they also comes with the directors cut verions.

      • -2

“I can see more detail…” 🙈 - You clearly don’t understand what you’re looking at, and don’t know what digital noise reduction and edge enhancement/sharpening filtering is and can’t spot when they have been used, and what they do to the image.

        • +2

This is a good example of what I'm talking about… The blurry is blury with washed out detail when compared to the 4k… its an improvement even if people think its a negative change..

          https://www.reddit.com/r/LV426/comments/18jo7et/aliens_4k_re…

I have both and on a LG OLED 65".. the 4k looks better… I never cared for film grain anyways.

          • -1

@vid_ghost: Reddit 🤣, it’s a shit source for amateurs, perhaps you should read on Blu-ray.com and you’ll learn a lot more from people with more knowledge, experience and expertise. Again you clearly don’t understand what you’re looking at, and what DNR and EE/sharpening filtering is and what it does, and how to spot when it has been used… It’s nothing more than trickery for fools who don’t know any better to give the false illusion that there is more detail when there’s not.

For any movie filmed on film there should be film grain present, so if you have never cared for film grain, then essentially Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray are not for you because detail is what you purchase Blu-ray for in the for first place… If you reduce or remove the film grain using digital manipulation/DNR then what you’re doing is removing detail that was captured on film.

I own both versions too, I also own an LG 65” OLED, and a Sony 77” A95L QD-OLED. What does you having an OLED TV have to do with anything, it doesn’t instantly mean that you’re knowledgeable and know what you’re on about, and are good at evaluating picture and audio quality.

@[Deactivated]: UMMM.. i trust my eyes over reviews… the fact is the bluray has less detail and is not as sharp as the 4k..
its an improvement in detail and picture quality.. thats a simple fact… its also a little strange what the AI does with eyes and hands but very forgivable and i dont notice the issues pointed out in reviews. I've watched the you tube critics

Disney+ has the 4k on its platform for people to watch for free

              • -1

@vid_ghost: How can you begin to trust your own eyes when you don’t even understand what it is you’re looking at, and what DNR and sharpening filtering is that the AI upscaling processing has applied for it to look the way it does, causing you to wrongly believe and think that the 4K BD has additional true native detail? You don’t have to care about other peoples reviews, the point was that it’s clearly a fact that you’re not very knowledgeable and experienced when it comes evaluating the quality of releases, and therefore it would be within the best interest of potential buyers of this title not to listen to you and trust what you say about it.

@[Deactivated]: I'm a videofile.. all about the QTY.. high rez gaming…OLED is king.. High FPS refresh rates… pretty sure i'm above average when it comes to what looks good and what doesnt.. i started with VHS. :) now on 4k. I've seen it all.. the reviews point out the flaws… the resuction in film grain along with some of the detail that was in the grain.
.. example.. giving T2 that waxy face look.. same with true lies… the thing is that its still a higher bit rate and the image does look better. Like going from 1080P in a videogame to 2160P.. and wth aliens James used the same (tranafer) master copy as the old bluray. Its not great but it looks better…

                  • -1

@vid_ghost: You’re supposedly a videophile but you can’t spell it correctly 🤷‍♂️… Based on your posts in this thread yesterday (being that it’s past 12am now) and on Ozbargain in general, you’re far from any knowledgeable and experienced videophile that I have ever encountered. It’s blatantly obvious from just the single post of yours directly above that I am currently responding to that you know nothing Jon Snow… A higher video bitrate won’t save anyone from this heavily processed DNR and sharpened filtered AI upscaled nightmare of a release, and I doubt you could spot a good quality encode/compression work from poor quality compression work even if the compression artefacts were to jump off of the screen and slap you in the face.

            • @[Deactivated]: vid_ghost said "on a LG OLED 65".. the 4k looks better". That's nothing to do with him trying to say he's more knowledgeable. He's telling us what he watched it on to give us a reference.

              • -1

@dregs: Member vid_ghost said that he/she is a videophile, and that he/she thinks they’re above average when it comes to judging what looks good and what doesn’t, and to that I’m saying based on his/her comments in this thread about the quality of True Lies and Aliens on 4K BD, as well as other comments, the member definitely is not a videophile and above average when it comes to having the knowledge and expertise to evaluate what looks good and what doesn’t.

Also I previously addressed vid_ghost’s comment about how they watched it on an 65” LG OLED in my second post a few posts above and disregarded it, since you seem to have missed it the first time then here it is again for you - “I own both versions too, I also own an LG 65” OLED, and a Sony 77” A95L QD-OLED. What does you having an OLED TV have to do with anything, it doesn’t instantly mean that you’re knowledgeable and know what you’re on about, and are good at evaluating picture and audio quality.”

I have watched them on a 65” LG OLED too, as well as a 77” Sony A95L QD-OLED, and can say with 100% confidence that member vid_ghost’s comments regarding their assessment of the quality of these titles is inaccurate, and it’s clear that they don’t have the abilities to even see what the actual issues with True Lies and Aliens are. However, don’t take my word for it, perhaps vid_ghost should start commenting about what they have concluded in the following 4K thread for True Lies on Blu-ray.com (and the thread for Aliens too while he/she are at it), and you’ll both see just how quickly vid_ghost’s findings and skills for determining what they have are below average when put up against people who are truly above average at knowing what looks good and what doesn’t:

      • I think we'd be better off importing the Spanish bootleg Blu-ray instead. Looks much better, from the comparisons I've seen

        • +2

What’s the story about that release. Is that a unique edit to the previous Bluray/4k releases, or just something being sold illegally?

In any event, I’ve always felt the grain added to the feel of this film. I have the 4K release, but will also be holding onto my previous Bluray copies.

          • @Smigit: It's a rip from a HDTV broadcast. Apparently, copyright laws are pretty lax in Spain, so it's not illegal there.

It’s technology to avoid doing a proper restoration.

    Garbage transfer sad to say.

  • Sucks that they screwed it up but it's not like we'll get anything better

The quality difference between Alien and Aliens is astonishing. I bought True Lies since it’s the only real way ro own the film on physical media legally, it’s got some horrible scenes where the AI has wiped all detail and turned it into a smeary mess. The Abyss was the best looking of the 3 IMO.

I hold very little hope on the upcoming Terminator release.

Personally, I think what is worse when they do these high res updates is (especially in this movie) you can see as clear as day all the stunt double's faces, which just takes me out of the movie every time.

  • Yeah: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxOqWYytypg

Think I'd rather just not own it.

this gets a like because of how great this movie was - they just dont make them like this anymore

    • +2

You’re right completely. Same with cops and robbers movies (eg. Lethal Weapon, Die Hard). Hollywood is way too PC these days to do anything like these. Having said that, I don’t see why they wouldn’t do something like Commando - loving dad with his daughter out in the sticks and she gets taken by bad guys and he has to rescue her. It’s got a nice backstory. And great lines like, “do you know how I said I wasn’t going to kill you?” - “I lied.” But then, that was Arnold.

Sadly this is true - i mean they killed Star Wars and Lord of the rings and they're killing Marvel

I watched Rush Hour 2 Last night (great movie) they would never make it now because of all the light race jokes

it is sad how society is becoming a overly sensitive woke idiots screaming for the sake of screaming

  • Looks like the price has gone up

  • She will be mine. Oh yes, she will be mine.

    Oops, wrong movie.
