Ahhh reminds me of my $250 ps3 160gb purchase from this time last year…

  • +5

Come on! give me the <$200 price already!!

  • +1

Is this the older model PS3? IINM, the new slim line models are 12GB or 500GB.

    • +10

Yeah, super slim is new model. I prefer this one myself.

      • This one is still a slot loader like the original PS3 unlike the newest PS3 which is a top-loader. Some people don't like top-loaders…

        • +2

the new one looks cheap, like it could break just by looking at it.

        • Yeah but smaller - and maybe quieter (just a guess).

If you have a tight space then the newer could be the best one to go for - also you can get the new one for $228 at JB I think - although that is the 12gb version which is completely useless.

        • +1

With a disc in the top it's louder, only a thin piece of plastic covering it

        • Have you ever tried to fix a slot loading disc drive, inside a proprietary hardware box built to keep you out? Not fun…
I managed to fix a wii console slot loading device and that took me like 2-3 hours and that would have been far easier than a playstation. I know you are losing features but I try to stay away from moving parts like electric windows just because I don't have faith in them.

  • +1

better option than the 12GB, thanks a alot !

  • +2

Bet those who bought the 12gb option the other day from JB are spewing!

    • I suppose it all depends on JB hiFi's return policy if they're spewing!

    • I got it price matched at BigW for this exact reason. Task it back today for full refund. Will purchase online tomorrow.

Considering the PS3 is as powerful as a "Wii U" but it can play DVD's and BluRays…. it kinda makes the Wii U already defunct. …unless you count the Wii U screen and pure genius! Still…. The PS3 is $248 and the Wii U at Big W is $348… you do the math… Is $100 more, just for a screen in the controller worth it…?

    • +4

First of all, the Wii U can play Nintendo first party games. Brilliant games like Mario, Metroid, Zelda etc and is backwards compatible unlike the PS3. The WIi U is also more powerful than the PS3. No idea where you got your numbers for. Plus the PS3 is six years old. Everyone who isn't homeless or unemployed should have one by now if they wanted one.

      • PS3 is kind of backwards compatible… it plays PSX games if I'm not mistaken, just not PS2.
At least my overweight PS3 does, I'm not sure if they've changed it since then

        • +1

Yes it does from the PSN. But I mean native backwards compability via discs rather than repurchasing games you already own. I mean the Wii U also support numerous other Nintendo consoles via its Virtual Console such as Nintendo 64 and SNeS

        • What he is saying is that you can play PSX games from disc if you've got them.

      • Everyone who isn't homeless or unemployed should have one by now if they wanted one.

Or they are a true true OzBargainer!

… or their steam list is still full of unplayed "Game-Of-The-Decade"s because they are too busy…

        :(

        • +1

"or their steam list is still full of unplayed "Game-Of-The-Decade"s because they are too busy…"

          or unwrapped DVDs

        • +1

ahaha true this is so me have approx 80 games in steam library from all the humble bundles for android/thq plus all the steam sales. Basically never played the games.

    • I'm sure it'll come down in price after a while. but yeah, one vs the other it doesn't make sense to buy a Wii U at this point.

  • -1

Does the "Spend $100 for $10 off" applies to this deal?

    • Probably not since that deal was only on last night…

    • It does for a few Everyday reward card holders-I suppose everyone has one of these, but I and a few friends have received a link to the same deal on the 13-12-2012 after 5, but only valid to our cards, so not for everyone but should be quite a few ppl.

  • +11

Here is (just a few articles about the power of the Wii U), sorry Mark96 :

    http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/19/a-glut-of-wii-u-guts-and-s…
    http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2012/11/29/nintendo-wii…
    http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/142002-wii-u-cpu-and-gpu-c…
    http://kotaku.com/5964432/hacker-says-hes-cracked-open-the-w…

I agree that Nintendo have AMAZING first party games…. and if you want backwards with all your old Wii games, it's handy for that…

But, the machine is 'on-par' technically with PS3 and Xbox. For a machine that is 6 YEARS OLDER THAN THE new Wii U and is AS POWERFUL as the new Wii U…. Shame on Nintendo using old (or un-powerful) hardware components…

Of the current generation (i'll include Wii U) - the PS3 is STILL the best choice for mum's and dad's wanting to buy their children a machine for Christmas.

    Why…?

    1. You can Play DVD's, CD and Blu-Ray discs (Xbox 360 can't play Blu-Ray discs and Wii can't play any discs other than Wii U and Wii games).
    2. The PS3 in this deal has a 500GB Hard disc to store heaps, the Premium Wii U has 32GB… you'll need to pay another odd $100 (on top of the Wii U) to attach a hard disc.
    3. The PlayStation Network is vast with heaps of old PS1 and PS2 games at offer, if you desperately wish to play the old games on the new machine.
    4. For another $88 (Harvey's price, but not the cheapest) you can add 'Play TV' to your PS3 - this will make it a TWIN TUNER TV recorder. Record two shows at once on your hard disc… 500GB is plenty of space…

There is so much more I could say… I guess it goes down to the buyer.. If you just lovve Nintendo then the Wii U is for you… But if you're a family and you want a game machine that can double up as a 'pure entertainment' unit for the living room… then it's STILL PS3.

    • +3

Just a note to any one reading the above post, this deal is the 160GB version.

    • "Record two shows at once" are you sure about this?
Might invest in a Play TV

      • It's honestly not that good. You would be better off getting Foxtel IQ, or downloading shows(off of iTunes and such).

        • I've also read horrible reviews about it, I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole considering you can buy tuners that record HD for ~$30 these days.

    • +1

Fair enough but I already have a PS3. And since its six year old most people who want one already have one. I'm not hating on the PS3 at all I have one and love it. The only thing is I got it at launch and now want something new to play. Blu Ray player isn't a concern for me as I never buy optical media. Furthermore my laptop has a blu ray burner.

    • You sure about recording 2 shows at once? A mate's PS3 struggles to even record one and if you're then trying to watch tv on it it glitches throughout. Seems great in theory, not so good in reality.

      • You can watch one show and record another at the same time. Recording 2 shows at the same time is not possible as far as I know (I have tried).

        • Does it record subtitles as well?

        • That's what I thought, but even still with recording something and watching another channel, the live TV you're watching constantly screws up. I only know this as the digital tuner in his LCD was rooted so to watch the footy we had to watch it through the Play TV. Was absolutely shocking to say the least.

Good in theory, but how it couldn't properly do it and Sony still released it I have no idea.

    • you didn't even mention PS3 has a huge library of games compared to the Wii U which only has a couple exclusives and none to look forward to.

    • +3

Don't think this is the place to ask about pirating.
      http://lmgtfy.com/?q=jailbreak+ps3+how+to+play+games+via+usb

    • Xbox is really the way to go if you want to do this.

    • +1

It is illegal, but you can backup your own games and use a ode with this model.
The advantage of ODE is it works with any firmware, and is transparent to PSN network.
Google PS3 ODE for more info, I have a a ODE for my 360 and its freaking brilliant, all my games load off my Harddrive

      • Haven't really followed the scene on these, but does that mean that all I'd need for my Xbox360 is one of these ODEs, no mod chips, dodgy firmwares etc? And no, I don't like piracy, but I don't like kids scratching the game discs to buggery either!

  • @erwinsie what you're talking about is illegally pirating games off the internet.

I've heard that you can with the OLD version Wii and XBox 360…. Again, it's illegal.

    • -8

thanks msjb+legiong, dont worry i know the consequences (and benefit) of doing it:D
true, seems like xbox is more "flexible" …

    • Learn to use the reply button.

  • HArvey norman selling that camera lens kit for $394, also office works sells it too, means you can price beat it by 5%

Also topbuy sells it for $357

  • Holy wow. Looks like they have free shipping too!

  • How much is an extra original controller cost and where to get the cheapest one?

    • -2

      google

    • +2

I think ozgameshop do them for 50-60 last time I checked?

  • Com'on retailers! keep bring the consoles price down, waiting for some crazy post xmas sales, hope they will come down even better!

  • Got my 320gb ps3 from Amazon Germany for $235 delivered back in july still going good! :)

  • Arghh

I got a PS3 super slim 12GB 2 days ago from JB for $229 + 2 years warranty (total of 3) for $30 and the HDD upgrade caddy for $11 (had a spare 500gb drive from my broken PS3 slim).

    total $270

I'm sure that 12GB version will drop down under $200 soon

    good deal OP

    • Interesting. I want to upgrade purely because the version 1 fan is so noisy, and I have a drive hanging around.

Should I go for the slim or super slim?

Anyone wanting to make an offer on my version 1 please PM me.

  • +2

I'd go for the slim, purely because they were a solid console. Like everyone has been saying, the super slim has not been tested.

  • Great price on the older Slim!

  • +1

I got this back in June of this year for the same price from Big W, except with Uncharted 2. Whisper quiet and great catalog of games. Anyone who hasn't got a PS3 yet, buy the older Slim model while you can; it's much better than the newer one in my opinion.

  • +1

Which stores would it be best to price match this at tomorrow so I can just pick up?

    • wonder this too, hate to have someone home waiting for delivery, and very slim chance any other shops will still has 160G version in stock.

      • Will ebgames or jb hi-fi price match?

  • +2

Does this sort of deal will able to start buying & clicking right at 12:01am midnite?

    • BIGW should not have have system maintenance to night. JBHIFI may give the same deal on sunday? Nail biting to order 12:01+++

  • +2

I was considering replacing my fat PS3, and I definitely find the latest model more flimsy.

But I just checked again this Slim is deeper than the earlier model, so while it's shorter in the other dimensions, it ain't gonna help me much.

I'm sure I'll regret missing this deal later as I'm sure my trusty PS3 will die now that it's sensed I'm thinking of replacing it!

    • I'm also thinking of replacing my original PS3. With all the YLOD issues that the early ps3 models had, and with the bluray drives failing quite often, upgrading might be worth it I think. At least then the hardware is new and you have a warranty.

  • I like this model

  • -2

    Controller included?

    • Yes.

      • +1

        Power adaptor and manual?

        • Possibly, not sure.

        • Box?

        • Only on the outside.

  • It's not working, going into cart at full price!

  • +2

Website ain't working for me, wants to charge full tote odds once I go to the checkout, anyone else having the same issue?

    • Same

      • it will probably reset in the morning like DSE. It always resets around 9am

  • Same here - wants $/385.

    • Grrr should I pay full price and get them to fix it later, or (probably) miss out?

    • Beat you. Wants $8 shipping as well for $393 total!

  • still adding full price to both items and adding shipping…

  • Try using this link…it's for the console only but checkout reads $248 including shipping

    http://www.bigw.com.au/bigw/navigation/product_details.jsp?P…

    • still charging $8 for shipping on that link and no game

      • I've ordered it for $248. The $8 shipping cost disappears once you confirm payment. Likewise I'll need to ring after 9am to confirm that the game is added to the order.

    • down to $286 now

  • Ive just orderd the console for $248 and when their phones open I'm going to call about GT5 being added to the online price.

    • Did u get free shipping?

      • Yer free shipping on all orders over $50

Just go off the phone with them, and it probably better to order it over the phone until they fix up the website.

As they had to cancel my original order and then place a new one with the markdown of the game.

        • As they had to cancel my original order and then place a new one with the markdown of the game.

          Same here.

The very helpful BigW lady I just spoke to said I was the 10th person she's had to "cancel+reorder" web-placed orders for the PS3 this morning.
