  • Harvey Norman also selling it for $788 with Bonus Alcatel One Touch T10 Tablet (7 inches tablet rrp $198)

May be laptop for yourself and tablet as christmas present.

  • Does JB do upgrades? Ie, if I wanted 8GB RAM and a 500GB HDD would they be able to do it?

    • do it yourself using the power of google

  • Is this Multi-Touch screen?

    Also… beware the low 1366 x 768 resolution!

    • It's 14" and is a res. commonly used on 15", the resolution is fine for most people and is expected for this price point and isn't as bad as some people make it out to be but it is needed to be pointed out, thanks.

  • this also ultrabook, so whats the differences with asus zenbook?

    • zenbook is alumnium and MUCH thinner

the ultrabook badge is thrown around loosely and only applies because its thinner than most laptops and uses a low voltage processor

also the specs and features are better on zenbook. Also only 1 model of the zenbook has touchscreen

basically if your not a laptop thinness whore and only use it for surfing the web. this is for you

Gamer? Don't even bother trying to game on this…
    i3 and HD4000 =/= gaming spec..

    • I would pick this over the HD3000 any day of the week :) but yes its not that "good" but will play a few new titles fine on low to mid settings

      • For the "avid movie watcher and gamer" low-mid settings on a terrible resolution is nowhere near good. It's false advertising and comparing it to the HD3000 isn't that impressive to be honest as they're both iGPU's with minimal power. If you want cheap performance look into an AMD APU.

+1 mate! For the avid movie watcher yeah ok, but the avid gamer? Yeah right http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-HD-Graphics-4000.69168.0.… Battlefield 3 = 17 fps on LOW settings.

Misleading description "And with Intel HD Graphics 4000 on board, play the best games at optimum settings without lag " - cannot play games with this video card

    • Just copy and paste from ASUS web page.

While it's not good enough for top end gaming it can handle COD MW3 without any issue. I've been playing MW1, 2 and 3 with my Intel HD3000 laptop. So light duty 3D gaming it's fine IMO.

      • lol using mw3 as some sort of standard benchmark

its unreal engine 3 mate, its like 8 years old

battlefield 3 uses frostbite 2, much more graphics intensive and reflective of modern gaming

    • Maybe they're using their own definition of 'optimum' settings… I'm sure it could push 30+ on a lot of games with all settings completely floored.

    • how about diablo 3? hd4000 is good enough to run it?
im not into shooting like call of duty but more of RPG/Action

1.8kg, hardly what Intel was pushing for when they conceived the Ultrabook style.

grab this if you're wanting something even more budget

    • i tested this the other day

      CELERON PROCESSOR wtf

also it lags when opening webpages so STAY AWAY

      • Ultrabook? They should call that a netbook because that's what it is.

Offtopic but ontopic-ish, I'm getting this touchscreen Sony Vaio from jb as a desktop replacement: http://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers/sony/14-inch-touch-screen…
    $1196.
It's a bit pricey, but not really, but it's only costing me $121 as jb hifi are exchanging my old sandy bridge defective 14" HP laptop, hooray! It comes with a good bluetooth mouse as well. Am I making the right decision or is there a better laptop for the "full Windows 8 experience with touchscreen."?

The specs seem pretty nice though.
    ivy bridge core i5 dual-core 2.5ghz (turbo to 3.1ghz)
4GB ram (might upgrade this to 16GB for $75)
750GB HDD (dats big! $15 for enclosure + $98 to replace with a 128GB SSD)
    1600x900 14" 10 point touchscreen.
AMD Radeon HD 7670M with 2GB memory
    4 usb ports (2 usb3, 2 usb2)
    HDMI
    HD webcam
    Backlit keyboard
    DVD writer
    Windows 8
    2.4KG weight

Sure, it's 2.4KG, but whatayagonnado. It's either some reasonable weight or no graphics and dvd drive, and I'm never buying another HP computer in my life after experiencing their awful support and warranty. DVD drive isn't really that important to me, but the graphics is.

    • You're buying a Sony expecting good support and warranty? I hope for your sake things aren't what they were 5 years ago then.

Beware of only a single service center in each state and call center staff with solutions such as "well you were using the wrong brand of blank DVD, we only support Sony and Verbatim brand blank discs."

      • Couldn't be worse than HP, sent it in twice, both times the 'fix' they did was just driver updates, even though the motherboard was defective and the problem happened no matter what operating system.
Was about to send it in for a 3rd time but then JB offered to replace it :).

looking at the jb website, I don't really have any other options other than the sony vaio.

        • I had a fried power regulator on the mobo, wouldn't turn on. Took it to the Sony service centre where it sat on the shelf for 2 weeks until they could get to it. When they tried it turned on, for some reason, so they gave it back to me saying it was fixed (they assumed I just let the battery go flat and didn't realise). I got it home and it wouldn't turn on. Took it back the next day and this time showed the guy at the counter that it didn't turn on to make them do something, because again it had to sit on the shelf for two weeks before they could get to it. It was then they actually ran some diagnostics and found the fried motherboard.

That was just the start of the woes. Ended up four months later me getting a full refund (I love 'lemon' laws). Much worse than the one time I have had to contact HP support, but then again the HP support was through a business account, I'm sure consumer support isn't as good.

    • SIMPLE ANSWER

      THERE ARE BETTER LAPTOPS

asus zenbook prime ux51a with touchscreen

I normally hate acer, but the S7 is a great laptop

even the dell with rotating screen is better than this.

if you can wait, then get another brand

if you cant wait, get a macbook pro. sell it on ebay for 90% of its value
and wait till the new windows 8 models finally come into stock and buy that

      • All of your suggestions seem to not have dedicated graphics, and I can't find information on the ux51a.
I want touchscreen, 1600x900 or more resolution, 14" preferable, + better graphics than intel HD 4000.

I'm guessing the newer windows 8 laptops won't be in until mid january at least… I don't think I'm prepared to wait that long!

I don't think I can make jb hifi wait, it's amazing they're giving me the full $1075 value for a laptop that's now worth less than $700.

Even if I did wait… I doubt that by january there would be anything much better to suit my needs and within my price range (max $1300).

I'd love to have an ultrabook with dedicated graphics but that seems to be impossible.
