Evening everyone, I was at Costco and walked past this in the laptop section and thought it was a pretty solid deal. It is both online and in store. I don't need something for gaming myself but it definitely would meet my needs. I personally don't need an upgrade just yet though. If anything goes wrong in the future with it, hopefully Costco should be reasonably helpful. Hope this deal might be useful to some. Cheers!

    i7-12650H 8GB/512GB RTX2050

    Lol bad deal

    • The RTX2050 caught my eye straight away, mega red flag.

  • +1

    8GB RAM for $800??

    • +15

You get a whole computer included with the RAM though which makes it a bit better of a deal.

      • Pretty bad deal still. Would be better off with one of the HP ones that comes to this price fairly often

        • -2

It IS a bad deal. 8 GB ram aside, RTX 2050? Heck, there are sooo many better deals that gives you the RTX 4050 for the same price, RTX 4060 for the same price (during a mad deal) or for $1000, or even the recent 24GB RAM + RTX 5070 for $1.5k

          • +4

@marshmall0w2: No way! A laptop that's nearly double the price is better! Have you considered that just maybe some people might not want to drop $1.5k on a laptop?

            • -3

@SarcasticEmu: Jesus, way to miss the other options I've listed for the same price!

              • +2

@marshmall0w2: First; and as far as I'm aware, I'm not Jesus, so don't call me Jesus. Second, some people still might not to drop an extra $200 on a laptop. This deal isn't for you, it's for those who have a budget of $800.

way to miss the other options I've listed for the same price

                  • @marshmall0w2: Fine link me to laptop for that price. That has a better processor, better ram, better GPU and better build quality that's not expired.

                    • @SarcasticEmu: Sigh and sigh of course expired. This is a good deal because the actual good deals aren't on moment.

                      • -4

                        @marshmall0w2: Both are expired.

@marshmall0w2: Both laptops you link to receive poorer reviews overall, and you can’t simply declare one better by pointing to a more powerful GPU without considering the rest, performance is about more than raw graphics. Have either of them shown signs of thermal throttling under stress? Also, is the MSI Thin actually physically slimmer than the others?

Also the MSI Thin has a notably stronger processor compared to the one in the first link, which makes it a solid pick for the kind of user who wants a balance between productivity and casual gaming. Still, just because certain features (like CPU power) matter more to you doesn’t mean someone else with different priorities wouldn’t prefer a laptop you’d dismiss.

And again both are out of stock, sometimes availability wins.

                            • @SarcasticEmu:

                              Not when

is the MSI Thin actually physically slimmer than the others

where GPU matter more than CPU due to greater CPU throttling between same gen vs base GPU generational performance difference.

And again both are out of stock, sometimes availability wins.

My philosophy is simply different and we can leave it at that.

          • @marshmall0w2: Terrible deal, what you really need to be buying are those 5090 laptops, for 4 to 5k, brilliant budget choices….

            • @maimai: Except you can get an RTX 3050, RTX 4050 or even an RTX 4060 laptop for this price.

          • @marshmall0w2: While I agree this is a bad deal, where are these sooo many 4050 deals for the same price right now? If there are sooo many why isn’t there a single active one now or in recent months?

As for 4060 and 5070, Just because there was a once in a blue moon limited time limited stock deal where someone clears out some kind of “special” stock, doesn’t mean it’s normal or there is enough units at the price to go around for everyone.

Please stop exaggerating. It seems when you see one deal your perception of reality gets skewed forever.

        • Missed the HP deal by a day. Really need a laptop by end of Oct. Does it come on special often?

    • +1

Just upgrade the RAM, $120 for 32GB. It's not a mac.

      Or pay $100 more for a 16gb model - https://www.jw.com.au/product/msi-thin-15-b12ucx-15-6-fhd-14…

  • +3

even a base model macbook comes with 16gb ram. windows with 8gb ram XD

    • +3

and they call it gaming laptop

      • +1

        Good enough for solitaire.

    • +2

8 GB RAM would be awful for gaming but base m4 air with 16gb is still double the price at 1600, and even with double the ram, i'd rather game on this than a mac.

  • anyone seen the screen quality?

  • +2

Needs to be at least 3050 for this price.

      1. This is a poor deal with ancient specs.
      • Well it wouldn't be a 3060, it'd be a 4050.

        • If they can find a 2050 in the back of the warehouse, they can find a 3060 ha.

    • This is 3050 laptop. The 4GB 3050. It seems they fixed the naming finally and calls it 2050 nowadays. I can’t find anyone selling 4GB 3050 anymore.

What you’re probably referring to is called 3050ti (6GB)

Let’s all just pretend that there was no such thing as 3050 4GB that came out it 2021 right alongside 2050 4GB.

      • What are you talking about? The 2050 and 3050 are completely different cards.

        • Na mate, look into it a bit more. There was 3050 laptop 4GB released in 2021 and 3050 "Ti" laptop 6GB released later.

Now they only sell 3050 6GB and this 2050 4GB, which is pretty much the same as 2021 4GB 3050.

Not bad as a work machine. Particular if the GPU can be disabled for some extra battery life.

    Rams? $50 for 8GB.

    • +4

Seems counterproductive to buy a laptop with a GPU, and then disabling the GPU.

      • well, size aside the spec is not bad for as a productive machine.

Cooling is better with GPU disabled.

        • You can get a productivity notebook from more reputable brands with way better battery life, higher portability and much more energy efficient CPU that runs cool on discount at this price nowadays.

  • +1

IDN why but as I know all laptop products are heavily overpriced in Australia, even after tax rebates, the price is much higher than the retail price in the United States and China, and they refuse to lower the price.
Can you imagine zephyrus 2024 4060 version in bestbuy now only need 407USD?

Can you imagine zephyrus 2024 4060 version in bestbuy now only need 407USD?

Didn't sound right so had to check. That item was open box and is unavailable, probably a one off. New is 1200 usd.

This was only a week or so ago https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/922059

I wouldn't pay $800 for the MSI with 8gb of ram

    • -1

      i7 12 gen vs i5 13 gen

i7 has more cores and more L3 cache.

      • I doubt at this price point, and with Windows 11 in 2025, the i7 extra cores and cache is going to give any real world performance alongside 8GB RAM and RTX2050 over the other cheaper laptop. If someone upgrades the RAM maybe but then we’re talking about $100+ price difference for the CPU upgrade.

Meanwhile the other laptops 13th gen i5 is plenty for this GPU and the extra 8GB ram will actually provide real world performance improvement out of the box even while having a couple of chrome tabs open.

  • +3

Msi thin series is thin in quality. Enuf said.

  • I didn’t know RTX2050 existed…I think this would be a deal at $500, maybe - the vram is also only 4GB which is not a good idea in 2025

    • Understandable that not a lot of people know about 2050. RTX2050 is laptop only GPU, not available to buy the physical card alone.
It comes out 2022 when RTX30xx series already in the market for some times.
This was released to answer for cheaper GPU demand, when GPU prices skyrockering due to it capability for cryptomining. It is basicaly low profile just GTX1650 with RTX technology.

  • +1

    Good deal for 2022.

  • If RAM can be upgraded, could be good enough for some use cases.

  • I'm not going to bother negging but this is a garbage tier deal.

  • Considering the HP Victus 3050Ti and 4050 with 6GB VRAM, 16GB RAM and 13th gen processor was available for $899 and $999 very recently, imo this is a pretty bad deal with 4GB VRAM and 8GB RAM.

For extra $99 you can get +10% effective speed GPU and +8GB RAM and a newer processor all of which combined should give you a much larger real world performance.

    …or

For +$199 you can get +72% effective speed GPU alongside newer CPU and +8GB RAM from an arguably better brand
