depends if used for gaming or office type work, i use laptop for office work, use cpu graphics and turn gps chip off to extend power, they they had oled screen than gpu for what i do.

        • +3

What laptop/portable gaming device do you recommend at this price?

            • +3

@marshmall0w2: Ah no I meant for gaming laptops/portable gaming at $800AUD, there doesn't seem to be anything around this for $800. For reference, I am ok with medium-low graphics at 60fps, this laptop seems to suit that but of course I'm always keen to hear if there is a better deal.

                • +8

@marshmall0w2: hmmm can't seem to find any laptop with a 4060 around that range

                • +17

@marshmall0w2: What 4060 laptop deal do you keep referencing? You posted this in the other thread and told people to use the ozb search, but I've just done that and there are no ~$800 4060 laptop deals, at least going back to Nov 2024, I CBF searching further.

If all you're going to do is claim there are 4060 laptops to be had and then tell people to search, you should back up your claim and post the deal or link to an old deal, because it sounds like fluff

            • +2

              @marshmall0w2:

What laptop/portable gaming device do you recommend at this price?

              • -3

@DiscountForThee: You missed my second paragraph.

                • +4

@marshmall0w2: If I'm being honest I literally can't see anywhere right now that has anything on sale close to $800 with a 4060.

                    • +12

@marshmall0w2: cheapest 4060 laptop on OZB has been $1189. You could be waiting forever for it to reach $800.

                    • @marshmall0w2: Damn yeah considering the other comment by x d 3, in my situation I sort of need a gaming laptop within 3 weeks or might as well not buy one. Given that the specs should be able to play games at 60fps on medium settings, I think this suits my needs. It's either this or a handheld like ROG ally for $700 and I think I'd make better use of the laptop.

                      • +2

@Chawklates: Nah bro. Marshmallow said to wait and buy a 4060 for $800. You'll probably need to wait about 3 years, but that's what he said. All other deals are bad.

                        • -2

@wombat81: See, the difference between you and I is that you wouldn't tell @Chawklates that an $800 for an RTX 3050 is a bad deal. I'd just straight out tell them it is.

                          • +11

@marshmall0w2: Oh I agree it's a bad deal. But this mystical 4060 for $800 that you keep banging on about but strangely never post a link to and that no one can ever find any evidence of. That's the strange part.

                          • +5

@marshmall0w2: It might not be good value, but you're acting like there are better options for cheaper, yet not posting any links.

I don't like the 3050, but that's because I can afford better, if $800 is your budget, you have to compromise.

If it were me, I would look at second hand desktops parts if I had to work with $800.
But the person asking the question seems to need portability, so rather than baiting them, either post a deal or hush

                      • +2

@Chawklates: If I was in your situation I would be looking at the second hand market. New PC's and components are absolutely terrible value right now.
If buying second hand, make sure to have the current owner get the machine running a heavy synthetic benchmark before you go to buy, so that you can see it running, check temps etc

                      • @Chawklates: Serious question: what do you need the laptop for within 3 weeks?

If you're happy with 60fps, then you don't need the 144hz monitor this laptop has which is an added cost (and the 3050 will not reach 144hz unless you're playing eSports on lower settings or older games).

Best question to ask is: what games do you want to play? Because that will help people understand if $800 is a realistic budget

                        • @DeToxin: Ah, going alone overseas for work, I just reckon I'd be bored out of my mind and just need to bring some sort of portable gaming device.

Anything up to Doom The Dark Ages, probs Baldur's Gate 3, Stellaris maybe, helldivers 2 etc

                          • @Chawklates: If it's strictly gaming and you don't need the PC side of it then i would be looking at a second hand Steam deck, the original LCD models been l can be had cheap.

Doom looks like it runs like sh*t on a mobile 3050 so maybe count that out.

Bg3 on steam deck doesn't look like it will be 60fps either.

Best bet is to have a look at the some of those games on different GPUs on YT then decide if you're gonna be happy with it or not

                          • -1

@Chawklates: I'd probably seriously consider getting this and throwing SteamOS onto it https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/916503

Pocket the change. Unless you also want to do work on the laptop.

                • +2

@marshmall0w2: People aren't on a damn laptop post looking for desktop parts of that's what you're suggesting

                  • -2

@DeToxin: Wait.. you think those prices are desktop parts?

@marshmall0w2: I don't know what you're suggesting because none of your comments make any sense. Post a link or stfu

                        @DeToxin:

                        • @marshmall0w2: Yet you literally never post any. Very mystical.

                            @Chawklates: $800 4060 bro. Wait for sale. /s

@Chawklates: Unfortunately not right now. I got the 13" M4 MBA for about $1000 with JB HiFi coupon (down to $1200) + Ultimate (further -10%) instore purchase.

                      • @DeToxin: He has no links. It's all in his imagination. He dreams about $800 4060s.

                • @marshmall0w2: I'm running out of ways to highlight to you how you missed their questions. Lol people are asking for equivalent or better portable gaming machines and you're not recommending a portable machine.

people are downvoting you.. im guessing they're the ones who have bought these gfx chips and feel a little hurt in the backide.

          • +5

            @SirFaffer: I don't have a gaming laptop, I have a desktop. I'm down voting this guy because he's yapping

        • +3

3050 is comfortably faster than a steam deck for gaming and plenty of folks game on that.

Yes different form factor but gaming performance only.

          • -3

@Agileduck: But why is the Steam Deck even relevant? Steam Deck is neither 2.3 kg nor volumetrically 2m3

        • +1

We know RTX 3050 would struggle with any gaming

Really, "any" gaming? Or you mean some new games that claim to be "AAA" ?

    • +2

Yeah if you want to play AAA games at max settings.

3050 with DLSS is fine for anyone who isn't a hardcore gamer

  • +1

    Is this a refurbished unit?

  • +3

I got a laptop with rtx 3050. Plays heaps of games at 4k. Nothing intensive. Though great for the kids
Worms Armageddon. Moving out. Overcooked. Minecraft. Even does switch emulation and all the all the old school emulators. Also works amazing for streaming games from my powerful desktop

    • +1

How many fps in Doom Dark Ages 4K?

      • +1

Sorry don't own it… Looking at it I can't imagine it being playable at 4k. Maybe at 1080p on low.. with dlss

    • +3

A laptop with a 3050 and 4k display?! What kind of config is that?

      • Monitor is my TCL c825 tv

      • +1

Guessing he has it plugged into his TV

  • +3

    Weight 2.3kg…

    • +3

Naming it "gaming" is HP's dodgy way to say its too heavy to be a normal laptop that you can carry around

    • +1

Would it make your life way more comfortable if it is 1.8?

  • +1

I've got a "gaming" 3050 laptop while I really don't game on it. It was purchased for some light autocad work.

It's great for 3d printing and slicing the files.

But non the less it's great for what it is. Id say it's it's in the same ball park as a 1080ti not ideal not powerfull but ok

    • +1

      1080ti is crazy?

    • +1

According to quick benchmark search 1080ti is 2x effective speed vs this. No way a laptop 3050 with 4-6gb variants and low tgp reaches anywhere close to a desktop 1080ti.

Maybe it comes close to a 1060 desktop

  • 6GB of VRAM…. 8GB wasn't enough.

    • +1

I have the 8GB RTX 4060 laptop and it runs all the lastest games on its 1080p screen without any issues. Don't forget, it's only a 1080p and not 1600p screen.

Any recommendations for office work with casual light gaming, no more than $1200 please?

    • Any ultraportable with Iris xe graphics

      • +4

Get one of the new ryzens with the 760m or the 780m igpu great bit of kit. Iris ain't even playing the same sport

        • Thanks, I am a noob in this topic - new Ryzen meaning the ones with AI? I have been searching but cannot find many models that tick everything you listed but below $1200. Do you have a couple of specific ones in mind please?

      https://www.harveynorman.com.au/acer-nitro-v-156inch-i513420…

If you add another $100, this plays the latest games. I have something similar and it plays the latest games with ease on 1080p

        Anything Acer is Bleh

        • +2

care to show me another laptop with a 2k OLED @ 90hz, a top end ryzen CPU with a 780m for anything close to that price though?

I'm not saying acer itself is amazing, but this particular laptop has performed excellently for the money, it gets hot when gaming yes, but as i said, i've just added a fan mat from amazon that's solved that issue for me.

It's light at 1.2kg too which is great for travel and it's non-gaming battery performance is good.

      • Thanks, came across this in my search too. Weight is also a consideration for me. Any negatives so far? Seems like overheating is a common problem and claims that ACER products may not last long.

Did you get it from Officeworks? The product code seems to be for OW (price currently $1017) and not from Lenovo.

        • +1

Only negative is the heat management when gaming. It does get hot and the built in thermal solutions don't appear to be adequate for heavy gaming scenarios.

I fixed this with a cheap laptop Matt with inbuilt fans from Amazon and I just use this when I'm gaming on it and I don't have an issue.

Heat is not a problem with regular usage, only gaming.

Other than that I love the device, the screen is particularly nice, though not overly bright outdoor in direct sunlight so that might be a consideration too.

Very light for the power you get though, I'm happy with it.

  • +2

You can't go wrong with this price, especially with an RTX dGPU. Not even the used market sell at this price.

  • +1

um, i see a long comment chain above complaining that the 3050 won't be able to play games but i reckon a setup like this would be used mostly for content creation like videos and blender/CAD/modelling

the keypad is super office-like and you even get a numpad

    • +4

It should run many games. It's only a 1080p screen. Plus you can always tweak the games graphical settings, turn down the extra enhancements.

      • +1

Do you reckon it would play CS2 on low?

        • +4

I play CS2 on a laptop RTX3050 on Medium and it's perfectly fine. No lag during grenades

      • -1

yeah, perhaps. games aren't really fun when you're playing on low/mid settings+framerate though. but with video rendering you won't need a 4xxx you just need time which what i think a laptop like this should be mainly used for

        • It's only a 15 inch screen. So no, IMO it won't compromise the quality much. But for the price, it's a no brainer. They're FB junk, dirty laptops that go for this much and they're like RTX2050

  • +3

    Good price!
I purchased 3050ti two years ago. I have no issue with playing games on it. What I played so far - Helldivers 2 / Octopath traveler 2 and Diablo 4. Not playing in high options but still runs well.

My main gaming platform is Xbox Series X.
Since I have been subscribing gamepass ultimate, having a gaming laptop is a good advantage. Also, some of the games I purchaed from Xbox can be downloaded and playable in my laptop (for exmaple Forza Horizon 4).

For a budget gaming laptop, 3050 6 ram is a good choice in that price.

  • Tempting but not sure if worth

  • Considering getting this for a Mech Eng student. Weight of 2.3kg could be an issue. How's the battery life of the 3 cell 52.5Wh battery?

There's also the 2050 version for $100 cheaper. Is that better value? Don't think there is a need for gaming but more for CAD.

    • About $80 cheaper, I guess 6gb 3050 is well worth that extra over 4gb 2050.

  • 4050 or GTFO

    • +3

      GTFO

  • -3

I rekon anyone trying to buy a laptop of any cost to play good games is just wasting their time and money. Just go out and buy a PS5 pro, like under 1000$ on sale .. why would any try spend same or double to get a PC laptop that will perform 10% of what console will do is just mindless

    • +3

First reason that came to mind was all the free game giveaways on Epic etc. Plus it's multiuse, portable, has screen speakers and battery, quite different to a PS5?

  • My cousin has this and it's really good. He doesn't game but he didn't purchase it for that purpose. He uses it for work and it does everything he needs with ease. I would absolutely purchase one at this price if I didn't prefer MacOS for computing.

    • What does your cousin do with it? Can it handle graphics editing OK?

      • +1

Yep, he does a lot of video editing for his business and hasn't run into any performance issues.

  • Thanks Op. Managed to get one when there were 4 in stock. All gone now.
