  • "Following the initial waiver, for ANZ Frequent Flyer a Total Annual Fee of $95 applies which includes a $40 Annual Account Fee and a $55 Rewards Program Services Fee."

Not bad - I'm an ANZ customer already though. If not for "This offer is not available … when you transfer and close other ANZ credit card accounts" I would do it and cancel after a year. Effectively, if you spend over about $12000 on the card in that year, you'd get one free domestic return flight depending on where you fly.

The value is really in the 10,000 points. Ongoing, you'd have to spend $28,500 a year to recoup the cost of the card ($95 value = 14,250 points based on the $50 wish card costing 7500 points, with 1 point per $2 spend for a Visa).

    • call them up and ask for waiver. I did it just 2 months back and it was fast and painless.

With these combined AMEX and MC/VISA cards, you need to factor in the average monthly spending and the percentage that would be on AMEX since not everywhere accepts AMEX. This is a good site that will compare the rewards cards based on average spend - http://rewardscompared.com/cards

We ended up going with the new Coles Mastercard and it's been great. 2 FlyBuys points for every $1 spent (plus extra FlyBuys points from Coles, Target, etc) and 2000 points redeems for $10.

  • Would it be worth activating the card for the FFP and then cancelling after a month or so ??

    • I have the same question!!
Is it possible to sign up with a number of credit cards that give you bonus points and cancel after receiving the points???

      • -3

You can but every time you cancel your credit card, your credit rating will take a hit.

        • +1

Incorrect. Credit files only record applications for credit. Approvals, declines and cancellations are not recorded.

        • so not a good idea to cancel :(

        • Not sure this is entirely correct. I applied for my credit history report. It only showed the number of queries made regarding my credit history, nothing about success failure or otherwise.

I'd rather use the points to fly than on gift cards…

So much value saving them and booking business class flights or flights during peak seasons.

    • Agreed. You can get a domestic upgrade to business from economy for ~15000FFP. Much better value than $100 worth of giftcards IMHO.

      • i wouldn't waste 15k points on a domestic upgrade. most domestic planes don't have a proper business section, and you're in the air for what, 1-2 hours? perth-syd excluded, but i doubt those flights have many reward seats available.

upgrade on long haul is the only way, or better yet, rack up those points for free international flights, nothing better than a free holiday right?

        • Just be careful, you still have to pay taxes on any flight, plus fuel surcharges so these are NOT free

        • you can use points to pay for them if you so wish

    • Is it possible to know how many FF points required for a particular flight before joining QFF? They show a guide that, for ex, 18,000 points can get you a Sydney - Auckland flight, but I think this varies greatly depending on the season. Quite keen to know the actual FF points required for a given flight.

      • +1

It changes per flight but I find a flight between any two eastern capital cities to be around 16,000 to 22,000 return.

      • +1

        Yes and no.
Particular flights change according to a whole range of things ie % of flight booked, number of points bookings, date of flight, how long until the flight leaves (ie they release more as it gets closer), time of day, carrier (QF or partner), etc
So you need to be a member to see points required for a particular flight at a particular time.

Provided you're flexible with dates/times, the guides are pretty accurate:
        https://www.qantas.com.au/fflyer/do/dyns/InitialPointsRedeem…

        • I've heard that taxes are surchages cannot be paid by QFF points. Doesn't this greatly reduce the benefit of QFF reward points?

With Coles Mastercard, the reward is 1%. (2 points for every $1 spent; 2,000 points redeem a $10 discount voucher)

Does this ANZ credit card with QFF rewards result in a better outcome? ie. higher than a 1% reward?

        • +1

@surm - Use http://rewardscompared.com/cards to determine how much your yearly reward is based on monthly average spend (and percentage of spending as AMEX if applicable).

        • Thanks Stix.

It says JetStar Platinum Mastercard gives the biggest reward, however, looking at the T&C, JetStar offer is not that attractive. JetStar automatically issues a voucher when the balance reaches $200 and should travel within 6 months! So, you can't really stack up vouchers and travel at the end of the year.

Also noted that the entry against the Coles Mastercard is not accurate.
          With a $2,000 monthly spend, the minimum annaul points should be 2,000 * 2 * 12. Every 2,000 points can be redeemed for $10 which means the total annual reward is 2,000 * 2 * 12 * 10 / 2,000= $240.

However, the above site says $173.22

        • +1

Yeah, forget the Jetstar rewards cards.

I see what you mean with the Coles MC. They've used the points to gift voucher redeem rate as 0.93% (0.926% from front page) instead of 1% that can be used ($1000 spend/2000 points for $10 reward).

          So 0.926% x $24000 = $222.24 - $49 (annual fee) = $173.24.

They should change the rate to 1% (spend to reward).

        • Thanks Stix for the clarification.

        • No worries - it's fixed up now by the way. The rep is over on the forum.

        • Taxes and surcharges can be paid with points using the Qantas Any Seat program but it ends up being a lot more points (usually double or more). These flights vary in point cost even more than Classic Awards, so you have to be a member to see them:

          http://www.qantas.com.au/fflyer/dyn/program/usingPoints/qant…

          My view:
I haven't changed my spending habits and i have only signed up for CCs with no annual fee so the points dont "cost" me anything, just a free perk that may be of some value one day. If it means that I can get a flight even at half regular price because of fees etc than that's a 50% saving that hasn't cost me anything in real terms. Or a free flight using twice as many points that haven't cost me anything.
Or better yet, a free upgrade to business class…

i HAD this card, recently cancelled 11 months in. you need to wait 3 months before applying again as a 'new' customer. but ANZ make you come in to activate the card and stuff. they have no online procedure for getting an additional card holder (snail mail that inevitably gets lost) and their online interface/system is terrible, so i wouldnt' bother again and i definitely wouldn't bank with them.

i got 10k points out of them, good enough for me. i'll look towards other banks to rort some more points from. and lol @ all the fear mongering in this thread. no cancelling cards doesn't affect your rating, neither do rejected applications. missed payments and balances forwarded to debt collectors sure as hell do.

  • I've noticed that the ANZ FF Platinum credit card is giving 20,000 bonus FFpoints, is this also no annual fee for the first year?

    • I believe that card has a $95 Annual fee
