"Everybody line up here for your one free dumpling, and have your voucher ready for collection," said the waiter. The eager OzBargainers line up neatly and quickly, fearing the free offer might expire before they received their serve. "Open your mouth, say ah, and watch for the dumpling magically flying into your mouth."

"Ah," opened the first OzBargainer's mouth. Using his highly practised kung-fu skills, the waiter simultaneously "chopsticked" one stone cold dumpling into the hungry orifice with his right hand, and collected the voucher with his left. The entire procedure took less than a second. For health and safety reasons the dumplings was served cold, so as to avoid heat injury.

The grateful OzBargainer mumbled, "Thank you."

      "Next!" said the waiter.

  • Mr Dumpling!

The banner about free serve of dumplings with purchase of 2 drinks from Chatime drew my attention and I found their facebook page.

    Here's a comment: "今晚剛跟朋友在Eastwood天同吃完,也算常客,可是結帳時老闆拒絕收xiao long bao voucher因為在櫃台A4紙上手寫please present voucher before order. 坐在最角落的我們根本沒看到只好付帳。

    Voucher上有寫嗎?還是你門口那裡有寫?雖然一籠只$8有必要這樣做生意嗎?今晚Eastwood的客人大概都沒有用到voucher吧?

    我是不會再去上海天同了,不會被你們敲詐手法被騙再去!"

    Translation:
I am a regular customer who had dinner at the Eastwood branch with a mate tonight. However, whilst settling the bill the branch manager insisted on presentation of the dumpling voucher before placing the order for it to be valid according to an A4 paper with that message at the counter.

Where on the voucher is that condition stated? Is there a note at the store entrance? We were seated at a corner and unable to see the message so we paid up.

I won't be patronising the store in future and will not be cheated by you.

    • The email quoted by the OP says "Present this gift voucher when placing your order".

      • Well, at least now we know the consequences of not doing so.

Since there are no bookings required, there is only one reason they have this condition…

They have different 'free' dumplings to the paid dumplings…

    • to be honest, been to the Eastwood one and the whole trickery surrounding vouchers/coupons is just an Asian thing. They will try and cheat you out of any money owed ever, however they can even if it means there is no repeat business. It's a true thing, if you look up businesses in China, thailand, etc etc and when business is slow, they put prices UP instead of down.

it's all completely backwards to rip off your customers who might return, in this case, I never will. free serving of dumplings is about 6 dollars, if you're that tight about stuff, they wouldnt let you out with only ordering free 6 dollar dumplings and nothing else, I bet you

    • Yeah this happened to us at Eastwood as well. They were total dicks about it, to be honest. Unfortunately it's the only Shanghai dumplings in the area, damnit!

  • just went to the World Square branch
confirm 1 full plate of 8 pan fried dumplings worth $9.80

    no purchase required
    eat in only

Their payment system showed account fully paid.

    • did you ask about only 1 voucher per table allowed?

      • +1

no sorry didn't ask about how many vouchers per table
it does say 1 voucher per transaction
so if you can somehow get 2 or 3 transactions per table

maybe you can sit with some friends
        get freebie
all get up and do an ozbargain victory lap
and then re-enter the shop for the second voucher
        rinse and repeat.

        • Breaking News

Chinese Restaurant falls foul of ozbargain deal. Administrators have been called in to deal with the insolvent firm.

On a more serious note, don't expect to con the deal. Some restaurants are rumoured to have links to the Mafia.

  • Mafia? Ah ok… Lol
