  • Looking for a 2CH dash cam (front & rear). What do we all think of this camera and deal? Should I pull the trigger or do I wait? I don't mind the quality of even the old A129 Duo, I just want 2CH :)

Seems to be an all time low for the A229 2CH if I'm not mistaken.

    • I'd say do it if you are not dying to go 4K.

  • Is there a need to upgrade to the A329 vs this one?

    • +1

4K@60fps on the front with 2K in the rear is certainly an improvement. Other stuff like WiFi 6 is a bit meh and the only other big improvement I'd say is the ability to connect an SSD in an enclosure for more footage. Getting an M.2 2230 sized SSD with a small enclosure would be good.

I personally wouldn't be jumping on it now. Not for the much higher price.

      • +5

4K60 and motion blur isn't all it's cracked out to be on the A329, it is an improvement but not night and day.

Transfer speeds are up from like 9/10MB to nearly 30MB/second on the A329, and the SSD is a handy feature.

The A229 Pro had overheating issues here in the Aussie heat, but will be testing the A329 soon in our heat with an SSD and also microSD card reader (to re-direct load internally by mounting the microSD inside the unit itself) —— which with the newer processor in the A329 should help to alleviate issues.

        • I've been told the overheating in viofo cameras can be resolved by running at 2k rather than 4k. But then you may as well have saved your money and purchased the 2k model.

          • @JIMB0: That is true I've found that works in my testing. It's a tough approach because other brands such as Vantrue don't turn off their dashcams when they run too hot, which leads to damage but Viofo does. So you can't win either way until the heat produced is reduced by improvements in manufacturing processes etc

      • how does the rear camera work? just a huge long ass cable across the car? woiuld it work for an suv?

        • +1

          Yep just a long cable. I believe it's 6m.

          • @Clear: ah ok that should be long enough. just need to hide it then

        • USB C cable.

        • i ran the cable between the upholstery frabric and the weather seals on the doors to get from front to rear, you can tuck them both in, then i took the weather seal out of the hatch boot, and ran the cable through the flexible black conduit that connect the hatch door to the cars main frame, from there i can easily run the cable to the rear number plates where I mounted the rear cam. You will probably need to take off your hatches rear panel.

    • I brought the 2 channel A329 with the power hardwire kit and a 256gb SD card delivered for $618 on preorder directly from VIOFO USA store.
It was cheaper than the A229 from the Australian store and I’m very happy with it.
The installer hadn’t seen the A329 model before and he was also very impressed for the price.

      • can u install these yourself?

        • +1

Yeah if you have a multimeter, some fuse taps and patience.

      • Nice, enjoy. I've still to put mine in my vehicle, as a I have a review queue of dashcams to get through but I'm looking forward to testing :)

    • 2K@60 is good enough in parking mode or driving as anyone who hit you need to be very close.
Using the A129 plus I manage to grab a clear picture of the guy face who swiped my car.

      • omg got some questions
        1) where did he swipe your car? im just guessing if someone swipes your car from the side then the dash camera wouldn't capture it unless they walk from the front or back
        2) you got a picture of the guy so report to police or next time you see him swipe his car (for revenge purpose right)?
        3) how does the camera pick this up when stationary? sorry assuming this happened when you weren't there and swipe means scratch car

        • +1

1 guy entered his car then reverse his car. 10s after my car “shake” which triggered the gyro to save the recording (or his movement in front of my car, not sure)
2 matter with the police as I dont visit that suburb often.
          3 as above.

  • +2

Any deals on something cheaper? Just need something basic

  • Figures. Ordered one earlier today for $262….

    • Cancel and order again?

      • Actually, I forgot I also ordered the CPL for the front camera. So it probably works out about the same or cheaper.

  • Should I get their SD card? Thanks

    • +11

No, go price beat a sandisk max endurance from amazon at officeworks

      • Yes 👍

      • +1

        The ozbargain way!

      • Is 256GB maximum size in this card and is it enough for dashcam footage application?

        • +1

Yeah I think thats biggest you can buy for max endurance. 256gb is more than enough for my use case and I am using this A229plus front and rear camera recording about an hour drive a day with low bitrate park mode recording which gives me about 10 days of footage.

        • I think 256GB is the biggest card this camera supports. I got a Samsung pro endurance 256gb and have no issues.

  • -2

I have one and love it. My only neg is that I wasnt aware I needed a secondary battery installed

    • +5

What do you mean you needed a second battery installed?

      • He's referring to the passive battery drain on your car battery if you use the hardwire kit and enable the mode where the dashcam still records while the car is turned off.

        • +1

yes but what does secondary battery installed mean? you only have the 1 car battery….

yes its a passive battery drain on the car battery due to the hardwire kit but if the battery eventually dies then you can't do much and just buy another one on the fly or get it installed before the current one dies right?

        • The hardwire kit has a voltage cut off so you shouldn't need a second battery.

Also not an issue if you have an EV generally.

    • I think I'm gonna get a battery monitor with whatever dashcam I end up getting. I was convinced by this video

      https://youtu.be/BcUzuwP-WPI?t=389&si=k8ycCV7F1xeNVmZ

This looks like a similar and cheaper product. Anyone got more info on this?

      https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007010195398.html

      • +3

Or get a 9v car charger with battery monitor like this one

        https://amzn.asia/d/6rtXsJJ

        • sorry noob question but how is this item going to work unless you have the dash camera plugged into this…?

      • +1

lol now i've got that item on my to buy list from aliexpress lol

      • how does this work - when checking the link its AU$9.42 then i log in, add to cart and now that listing is AU$21.19 wtf lol

        • I think that's the new user bonus. Gets me every time.

          • @shiggaz: Damm that’s annoying. My first purchase was a Viof a229 plus last month but I didn’t get any new user bonus and it’s the same price now still (but at least there’s a sale on for this camera with this deal)
            Dohhh and grrrrr

  • +7

If you're getting the 2CH option, note that it's cheaper to get the 2CH + HK4 bundle deal, which brings the pre discount&shipping price to US$174. This makes it eligible for the OZAF40 coupon instead for US$25 discount, rather than the US$12 for OZAF20.

I got my order down to US $156.84 after shipping&tax

    • Thanks, was tempted to go 1CH, but this convinced me its worth going the extra!

    • I bought the CPL for the front camera instead. Don't need the hard wire kit as I have an external battery to run it off of.

      • how did you install an external battery just for the dash cam hard wire kit?

        • I have Celllink Neo installed on my car so I just hook up the dashcam to it. Doesn't require faffing around with the car battery and risk draining it.

        • You could also use a decent sized power pack.

          • @Plug: Normal powerbanks shouldn't be used to power dashcams as they are not designed to handle the level of heat that you get inside a car during Aussie summer.

    • Thanks, is the hardwire worth any on resell market place?

    • +1

A lot of people are commenting/deleting comments and messaging me in PM.. How did I get the price down to US$156.84…

I can't edit my comment above but in the post there are TWO AliExpress coupons…
In my purchase I used both OZAF40 and A229PLUSVF10 to get it reduced by US$35

      • Can you combine multiple codes in general when you buy from aliexpress?

        • +1

Yeah. On the web, I clicked "Promo Codes" under "Saved" (if you've already put one in) again to add additional codes.

  • +1

    There's a coupon AU1140 to make a $280 spend grant a $40 discount instead of the $20 discount for AU1120.

I was looking at the 2ch Plus + wiring kit for $275~ with $20 discount. I just added another product for $5 to make it a $40 discount

  • Interested, how does warranty work dealing with AliExpress and offshore seller?

    • Also interested in knowing this before I pull the trigger…

      • +1

It seems once Viofo agrees to replace, you need to send the faulty unit to their local distributor, once received and assessed, they will send a replacement from the factory.

So it's about $10 postage out of pocket, and few weeks wait without a camera.

  • Does cashback works from shopback as i can’t see the vouchers listed on shopback? Thanks

    • Yep the item is affiliated.

  • +1

oh bloody hell im such an ali express noob. i just bought this on aliexpress 1 month ago, paid in AUD and in total plus the extra CPL (for the front camera since this doesn't come included) it costed me $330 so this is a good deal!

i did do shopback but it didn't even register my purchase grrrr

    • Open a return and buy this again - last time I opened a return for a dashcam on AliExpress, return address was of some warehouse in Sydney, instead of all the way back to China.

      • Ah all good what’s done is done, I shall try and learn from my mistake with future purchases from aliexpress

  • -1

Any deals for A129 Plus? I want to use the existing wiring - A229 uses different cables.

  • I'm fed up with my older BlackVue 2ch aand want to upgrade

Must be 2ch (front and rear) and even 3 channel would be good for in case car gets broken into/stolen.

What's the suggestion for model of Viofo that beats the BlackVue range please??

    • Viofo A229 Pro 3-channel, I've run that setup for the last year without issue (well overheating during summer at times where it shuts down but other than that it's been rock solid).

Testing the A329 as soon as summer properly hits so hopefully the new processor will run cooler.

  • This is NOT a good deal, I literally got mine for 240 bucks, plus another 20 bucks worth of goodies for free…

Ali has coupons currently if you spend 280, you get 40 bucks off…

so I've bought mine at 260 + added 20 dollars of others stuff - 40 bucks = 240AUD and other stuff for the dual channel same dashcam, so not the best deal.

    • There's a whole lot of options on the listing and a crap load of coupons. People can take their pick.

  • +2

I have this 2 channel dashcam hardwired. Only issue I have with this camera is that it can either do 2K30fps with HDR or 2K60fps without HDR, shame but the image quality is good enough. Defo recommend everyone to get both front and rear CPL filters as well to reduce glare and interior reflection, makes a big difference.

    • thats a bit sucky - based on our experience what setting would you use between the 2? 2K30fps with HDR or 2K60fps without HDR?

      • I use HDR with 30fps with 2560x1080 resolution rather than the full 2k to save storage. The 60fps is slightly better at capturing number plates during the day but HDR for handling glare and low light conditions are unmachable.

        • thats a bit dissapointing, its like each has their own advantage and disadvantage when clearly you want 2K60pfs with HDR

  • This or the 970x plus?

  • +2

    WiFi function question
Am I right in thinking the purpose of the WiFi is the dashcam has its own WiFi signal that you connect your phone to so you can view the data recorded?

If so, are there any dash cams with WiFi that can connect to an existing WiFi network in the vehicle? I have a motorhome about 6 metres long. I'd like a dashcam front & rear. Routing cables from front to rear is a PITA and further than most cables included in a dual camera kit.

I have a router/modem with WiFi in the van, so ideally dash cams could connect to that.

  • Just when the cashback deals expired.

  • The rear camera is also 2k not 1080p. The previous version had 1080p but new version is 2k front and rear.

  • If you use the hardwire kit you'll also end up with a bonus 3 long metre long USB to USB C cable and 12v socket adaptor left over.

    • what happenes with the extra length? i'm getting my car fitted with the dash cam tonight (by someone i found on airtasker) lol

      • It either gets bunched up and cable tied under the dash or does a lap of the car before going to the camera. If you're pedantic you could shorten it by cutting out a section and rejoining it.

        • i guess i'll let the guy worry about that when he installs it.

i was initially worried because i was referring some video online (that filo guy that does all the camera reviews) and he was saying that i might need to get the longer cable for the install too lol

  • How does VIOFO compare to Street Guardian? This is what I'm using currently: https://streetguardian.info/product/sg9665gc-v3/

  • my HD viofo front camera got stolen. Anyone know if I buy a new 2k or 4k front camera if it will work with my current hardwire kit and rear viofo hd camera?

    • Probably different USB system

    • +1

wtf someone purposely broke into your car to steal the viofo front camera? what a sad case gosh

    • We need to know more

  • I am on the lookout for decent dashcam with park mode as my car is always on side of the road. It kinda gives me anxiety so I need dashcam. Too many rough and distracted drivers believe it or not. My questions are. I am not handy with cars. And because I need both front and rear camera installed, are there any good installers if anyone knows? How easy it is to uninstall these dashcams if i was to sell my car? Please help

    • i found a guy from airtasker when i installed my first (crappy) dash camera which eventually busted and now using him to install this viofo dash camera.

good reviews so he is charging me $50 for uninstalling and $150 for installation so i think thats ok price so i can pm you his details (this is for sydney).

if you were to sell your car, you can get it uninstalled professionally (maybe from this guy i can give you his details)

      anyhow let me know :)
