  • Any way to confirm this would be the latest version of the max?

    • Better be, just ordered 2

      Try Calling a store

      • Hmm was released late 2023 so yeah most likely.

    • +5

The picture shows the new version and the description lists 16GB storage and Wi-Fi 6E which matches the new version.

      • ah right you are, that will do.

  • nice, so price match with JBhifi then apply 10$ perks coupon :D

    • How did you get JB to price match a coupon offer from Big W?

      • havent tried, will try and report back

    • I keep getting spam from JB to my perks email but the $10 coupons stopped. You (or anyone) still getting them?

      • +1

the $10 coupon is the one you get when signing up for perks.

        • and again on every single one of your birthdays each year ;)

        • Right I thought you were referring to some other recent distribution of vouchers that I'd missed.

What's wrong with the built-in apps already available on TVs?

    • +14

TV OS are notoriously horrendous. They’ll give you cutting edge panels where you can make out individual feathers on a humming bird but throw in 128mb ram to run the entire OS.

    • +1

It's up to the manufacturer to support that OS, which they frequently don't do a very good job of doing.

    • +3

Nothing if it works for you

      • -2

Not really. Just because “it works” isn’t good enough if the manufacturer isn’t pushing out security updates anymore (or ever in lots of cases).

        • +3

Yeah, I mean "works" like if you're happy with it. If he's happy amen.

I've had the situation where my cheap n nasty smart TV manufacturer stopped providing updates for the built-in Netflix app which ultimately meant it stopped working with Netflix. The Fire TV stick (4k max) just works, offers more apps, silky smooth..
Another benefit is for holiday houses/hotels etc - you just plug it in and it has all your apps signed in and ready to go.

One gotcha I found with the more powerful Fire TV sticks (maybe only the 4k Max?) - is that some TVs might not output sufficient power via the inbuilt USB port to keep it running - so you'd need to either plug it into the wall (they provide the adapter, but can be inconvenient in places) or use something like this: https://www.amazon.com.au/Amazon-Power-Cable-Eliminates-Adap… - magical little gadget!

      • Oh shit, now I'm worried… The RGB (it was cheap..) portable HDD didn't work in our TCL TV, maybe it will have issues with these too?

        • I have a k85j sony 4k blah blah. Android os is ok but i still use a Fire max.

We have cheapy TCL in the bedroom with Android ive ended up pluging a standard fire stick and did use a google tv for a while, miles better.

Its insane to me that TCL, put such poor chip in their tv that a $40 google TV can do a WAY better job. The native Android on the tv essentially doesnt work. Its a 32" but the 1080p 60htz HDR (yes, cheap but it ought to work).

4k Fire will require a usb power plug I thought, whereas standard fire can be off low 12v tv port. Could be wrong.

          • @Goremans: We paid ~$480 for a 65" so honestly wasn't expecting much in that department but if we don't power off the TV at the wall every 2 weeks it gets so laggy it's unusable… Wouldn't be too frustrating if doing so didn't reset the picture quality settings (which are terrible out of the box…).

  • Code doesn't work for me unfortunately even after linking

can anyone comment on stremio 4K remux black screen issues? does latest firestick hardeware/software version support DV9?

    such confused….

    • I stream 4k remux via plex app with no problems. Dolby Vision 9?

I've not heard of that - but mine will play DV and for me, most importantly, TrueHD, and Atmos audio

      • its a stremio thing apparently mate, but thanks for the reply & have a great night!

  • Same Price On Amazon, free delivery with Prime

  • Can anyone tell me if I can cast Instagram reels from my phone to the tv smoothly?

And should I spend the extra $10 for the max?

I will mostly use the browser and YouTube to watch movies.

    • The standard 4k works perfectly fine (espectially if brokie) - the Max brings in a few pretty minor improvements to extract a few extra coins from the rest of us.
+$10 gets you potentially faster wifi (if you have a more recent 6E or 7 wifi router), faster cpu, double the storage and a couple of extra buttons on the slightly longer remote (separate up/down buttons and dedicated settings button)
I believe there are a few casting apps on Fire TV but I can't vouch for them.

      • +1

Also power and volume buttons on max remote. Standard assume you have arc and use the tv remote.

The home button essentially turns the standard on, but I think there is some difference in equipment control.

IMO 100% worth the extra at this price.

  • sold out for all 3 BIGW stores near me..

    got one thanks OP :)

Biggest annoyance for me with the Firestick is that it doesn't pass through sound as is. If it's in stereo it upmixes to PLII. Which is annoying for stereo Youtube vids as the sound then primarily comes out the centre speaker. Have not had any luck finding a way to stop it. Can prob force something on the amp, but would then have to mess around with settings again when needing surround.

    • I only have experiences with Pioneer and Yamaha amplifiers/receivers and they usually have a "pure direct" mode so you just need to toggle that to switch from surround 5.1 to pure stereo and vice versa.

For example, on my Yamaha receiver, there's a button on the remote control and a button on the receiver itself called "Straight" and I just need to press that button to switch from surround sounds to stereo for music (then press that button again to switch back to surround sounds).

      • I have a Denon and can't recall seeing a button like that unfortunately - especially on the unit itself. But will have a look thanks.
I've sometimes wondered if it's because of going through the TV via ARC as my amp can't passthrough HDR, etc but then other devices hooked up the same way don't do it so can only assume it's the Firestick for whatever reason.

  • Good price if you want it sooner and don't want to wait for delivery from Amazon. Amazon price is same with cashback but again you'll have to wait for cashback

    • I ordered it from Amazon at 7am in the morning, and it arrived in the same afternoon (I have Prime though). Saved me time and petrol money

  • None available for pick up in SA

    Thanks!

I have 4k fire and have volume control on the remote. It has 16GB, just disable or uninstall the "bloat". Mine displays 4K native no problems. Best device besides Shield for passthrough Dolby Atmos and TrueHD, and uncompressed audio.

Not bad at this price. 👌

Then again all depends on ones use case.

    • I have zero trouble installing whatever software i feel like, controlling the TV with the Firestick remote, displaying 4K, adjusting the volume, or using my adult-sized hands to manipulate everyday objects

      are you ok

lol negged just because it's doesn't work for me.

the thing is designed for not a particular TV, but for TVs in general.

you can search for these issues there are a lot of people who have the same issue.

Just because it works for you doesn't mean it works for others.

Neg me all you want, the NVIDIA shield, Roku, the new Google Tv is WAY better than this Amazon crap. It just seems built for another universe, it's like trying to use a Huawei phone in Aus. Yes it's usable but all these tricks and hacks to get half baked google play, missing bands, yet you have a bunch of huaidiots who will come at you with pitchforks and say "nah not me".

Well duh. Except the fire stick is actually designed to be used by any TV in general. I have a JVC with android tv so it's not like it's some North Korean unknown hardware, it should work but it doesn't.

I have these issues and they're valid no matter how you neg me. It sucks and you know it. If you were given the option every one of you would pick the shield instead of this weird asf half toasted amacrap. Seeth harder

      • You ok?

        • -1

can't even install YouTube music on it, f king pathetic lmfao

          • @jsvr: You can put smartube next on it. Sideload pretty much anything. The only problem currently is amazon pushes out updates which can remove custom home screens sometimes.

            • -1

@drspy00: I did put smart tube on it, but YouTube music doesn't f king work

  • +2

Wait for Amazon Black Friday sales in a couple days, combine with cashback offers

  • Ive had 3 fireTVs get stuck in a bootloop, it can be possible to revive them but that was mainly the older versions, if its the new 4k max it should be ok.

  • Is this the best deal?

  • +2

Has Amazon fixed Kayo yet?.I bought a Fire Cube when half price, everything worked well except Kayo had like a memory leak, it would run fine for 10 mins then start to slowly miss frames and then freeze.

When I raised with Amazon they basically ignored me, the Kayo app was over a year since last update which at the time was May 2023. I ended up going with a Google TV instead as it's flawless even if a bit slower.

    • Works great for me on the standard 4K, watched hours of sport no issues

  • OOO everywhere near me.

  • Sorry for a noob question, is this the same functionality as google Chromecast? Im in the market to replace my first gen of Chromecast but for the 4k this looks more value.

Do you also need to login to your amazon account? I forgot if i need to login my google account to Chromecast

  • +2

This + stremio + torrentio + real debrid = WIN

Had to get it at Officeworks tho

    • +1

That's so true… Stremio + Torrentio + RD has been the best combo for me, although I use Chromecast with Google TV (and no reason to replace at the moment).

  • Can anyone that also has a Google TV 4K compare the two?

We’re running a few GTVs and wondering if it’s worth switching up.

  • Bought it yesterday. Playing DV videos on streamio, results in no video, only audio playing. Tried another player, tried disabling HDR, tried power cycling and tried different ports on TV. No issues with same using Nvidia shield.

  • Legend. Got one, APK sideloading works almost out of the box.

  • I couldn't find at my local bigw online but I had a birthday $10off with JBHIFI perks so I ordered the 4kmax for $49.

  • Does this use my Woolies 10% up for the emonth?

  • The code can only be used once :(
