Good stuff. Happy to hear that you got the difference refunded.

  • does it have e-sim? thanks

    • +3

      Yes it does.

    • +1

      SIM type
      Dual SIM (nano-SIM + eSIM)

  • are these waterproof?

    • +1

      nvm .. found it..

Environmental protection: Dust resistant, Water resistant
      IP rating: IP68

    • +1

The Pixel 8 is IP68 compliant

So it is water resistant in fresh water to a maximum depth of 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes, and is protected from dust.

  • This or Pixel 8 Pro for $200 more?

    • Where is the 8 pro $200 more?

      • Kogan has it for $929 so maybe about $250 more

        • +1

Ah ok, thats a grey import?

          • +7

@cosjav: you can count on that. Never buy a phone from Kogan.

They once tricked me, by advertising their Samsung phone as "Australian Model". What I received was a Vodaphone NZ branded phone that couldn't use things like Samsung Pay because it was an international model. Kogan's response: it's not Australian stock, but it is the same model used in Australia.

            • @Make it so: Smart watches are also a problem, my iWatch Ultra was foreign and no mobile ability here, but I know to buy from Kogan via eBay so easy refund but direct your so screwed!

  • Does the 8 come with free unlimited google photo storage?

    • +1

Nah that was discontinued several generations ago.

    • +1

Have to get yourself an old pixel, run Syncthing app to automatically copy photos to the old phone and let that do the unlimited free storage.

    • There are hacks around this if you're really desperate

      • Any hack that works in particular for you?

I'm still on Pixel 5 and not upgrading due to unlimited storage.

        • I just checked GitHub. Looks like the hack is now unsupported. ☹️

          • @MS Paint: Were you thinking of pixelify?

        • Use syncthing as mentioned above.
I upgraded to P9 pro and currently use syncthing to copy photos automatically over to pixel 5 (or pixel 1 if you can find it).

          • @mmd: There used to be some but now seems all gone off the marketplace. Pixel 1 is getting too cheap and not worthy selling it anymore?

  • +1

is the jbhifi version OEM unlock enabled?

  • +2

anyone know when the deal finishes?

  • +2

Officeworks finally dropped their price! Purchased last year for $797 so time to claim back the difference!

    • 28 degrees price protection?

      • Grandfathered Coles MasterCard

  • Should I upgrade to this over my smashed up Pixel 6 Pro?

    • yes. worth it at this price

  • +1

Reminder that the modems in these are trash.

    • How bad?

  • Do any of the later pixels do face biometrics faceID style?

I've got a pixel 7 and it's annoying being able to unlock the phone with my face but still need to use fingerprint reader for biometric authentication.

    • Only the 8 and 8 Pro I think. They still don't have IR cameras (only the 4 had), but they're confident enough in the optical camera + AI to use it for general purpose authentication.

      https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/9517039?hl=en

Important: On Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro only, you can also use Face Unlock to verify that it’s you, like when you sign into apps or approve a purchase.

  • arghh! I bought this last week for $897 from JB, anyone know whether they'd honour the lower price and give me a refund on the difference?

  • This or IPhone 14?

My iPhone 12 mini seems to be dying, I don’t need a fancy phone but seems it’s time to upgrade. Obviously, sticking to Apple eco system would be easier.

    • Obviously, sticking to Apple eco system would be easier.

I think you just answered your own question.

    • I’ve got an iPhone 12 and am wanting to upgrade, but the 14 is generally priced nearly 50% more than this.

      • JB Hi-Fi Business portal has the iPhone 14 (128GB) purple colour listed for $881 delivered. It's still a big chunk more than this Pixel 8, but not 50%.

Anyone out there had issues with their Pixel 7? The missus put the latest software update on hers and it's borked many things, including the camera and bluetooth. Trying to decide if it's likely to get patched out in the next update or to just factory reset it…

    • +1

Am using one to type this, no issues with it and it's a refurb

    • +1

Which update? Android 15? No issues for me for that one.

  • Is this worth the upgrade from pixel 6A?
I find my 6a is getting sluggish and photos don't seem to be as clear

    • It is a good update ☺️.

    • Yep! I just upgraded from a 6a. camera quality alone is worth the upgrade for this price I reckon.

  • Does anyone have a comparison between this and the moto edge 50 neo?

  • Moving from pixel 5. What do you recommend Pixel 8 or Pixel 9?

    • I too am on same boat but my pixel 5 battery is crap. Also thinking if just hold out for Samsung announcement of s25. If all devices have snapdragon, i might go back to Samsung

  • +1

256Gb is only $100 more expensive if you look for double the storage. https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/google-pixel-8-5g-256gb-o…

  • +1

Really happy with the Pixel 8, upgraded from the 3a in March last year and it runs super smooth, hasn't had any glitchy/big error and have dropped it several times with no case on and has barely made a scratch on the screen.

Would definitely recommend at this price.

  • Did the call around with JB stores in the northern / western suburbs in Melbourne, the black and grey colours are sold out, only rose left :(

    • Slap a case on it.

  • +3

Thanks @APN Adelaide and @Wiser. Bought the 256Gb in Obsidian Black with a 4% discounted gift card, making it $755.52 😁

    • +1

Nice to know my comment helped someone. Enjoy

    • Can you share which one is the gift card with 4% discount? Cheers.

      • +2

        Have a look here under JB-HiFi: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/discounted_egift_cards

Depending on what you have access to, you may be able to get a discount of up to 5%. Note that not all of these provide the gift cards immediately on payment (I know ShopBack and Macquarie do), so that's something to keep in mind

Is upgrading from the Pixel 6a to the Pixel 8 worth it? Or, should I go for the 8a?

    • Pixel 8 at this price point.

  • Ended up ordering from Harvey norman as they were the only ones showing stock, just got the email saying they are out of stock and it will be dispatched when they feel like it (website still shows its in stock)

    What I expected though

    • I ordered from HN online this morning $705 delivered. Got an email saying it has been shipped. Hopefully yours isn't too far behind.

  • I am wondering if anyone who has bought pixel 8/9 is experiencing springy/tinny sound from the haptics?

When I press a key long enough or when using glide typing, the haptics seems to make tinny vibration sound.

Not sure if it was just me or someone is also having the same issue.

  • Tempting to upgrade from a Pixel 5 to this device.

  • For apple fans like me, wait for the SE2025 or whatever its called as its weeks away from launch

  • I can't believe Auspost took time to and effort to send my package zigzag from Western to Eastern Sydney, then to a distribution location near me - which basically between Western and Eastern.

I should have come to JB store and get it next time if want it faster.

  • How much of an upgrade would this be to my iPhone 12? I’m particularly interested in knowing if my reception and mobile data performance will improve (I’m in regional VIC).

    • That fully depends upon the mobile providers.
From iOS to Android will be a steep learning curve.

      • I’m in Central VIC and not rich (can’t afford Telstra) so would be trying to stick with Boost, ALDI, Optus or Optus MVNO.

I’ve had a whole range of phones over the past 15 years - from a Sony Ericsson to an iPhone, to a OPO then a Sharp, then a Pixel 3A, now an iPhone 12.

To complete the collection maybe I should be trying a Motorola or Samsung…

        • Then pixel should be good, will give you free years of software updates and Google smarts.
Have you looked at Cole's mobile plans yet?

  • Who is better to deal with in case of warranty issues? OW or JBHF?

    • What is "OW"?

    • Generally speaking, the vendor is always the first contact for any warranty claims. They can then talk with the manufacturer.

  • any1 know how long this deal will go for?

  • +1

Thanks OP. Wife's pixel6 broke yesterday and this deal was a the obvious choice.

  • Got an 8a for xmas. It's solid, but be prepared to invest a few hours in customising if you're even halfway privacy conscious.

    • Care to elaborate on the privacy proofing part?

      • The default settings are to have AI integrated into multiple preinstalled apps, and the power button is starting Gemini AI in listening mode by default. You'll also need to read some prompts carefully which are all suggesting you upload everything to the cloud, like your pictures, settings etc. It goes as far as the default weather app being completely unable to tell you the weather unless you give it GPS access (no option to type any city name). The tile to toggle NFC is not there - you can only disable NFC by going through the settings app (less of a privacy concern, but more safety). Password manager: Google is preset.

Just some examples I can think of off the top of my head.

        • Is it possible to install custom ROM in Pixel 8a? ASOP or LineageOS used to be big names in the past.
