Can i pay my tax/BAS with this?

    • via pay.com.au or Sniip I guess

    • +6

You can use it to buy Visa/Mastercard pre-paid cards with $0 activation fee or during a promo at Coles/Woolworths and use those to pay your tax. 0% fee on the ATO site for those cards and you earn full points (2.25 per dollar) on the Amex.

      • I thought you still incur a fee by the ATO for paying via Visa/Mastercard

        • Changed recently. No longer a fee.

          • +11

@Milkywayss: They discovered charging a fee wasn't exactly legal so they took away the surcharge and made a law saying it wasn't illegal in the past no takebacksies.

            • @denserham: This is only for debit cards btw.

            • +2

@denserham: Wouldn't exactly say they discovered they couldn't do it. They had received a repeat number of legal advices, under a number of different governments, over many years.

The fallout of Robodebt was a bit of a shockwave through the higher levels of the APS. Once they saw that Secretaries, Band-3s, and Band-2s were actually being investigated for their conduct during Robodebt you suddenly saw an about-face at the senior levels in other agencies that for issues like this they couldn't keep sweeping it under the rug.

Anyone who says it was triggered by the legal advice received by NSW Government is ill-informed. ATO has known they couldn't legally charge the fees without an enabled legislation for decades.

      • @decryption that is some solid advice there! Would you recommend the Australia Post Everyday Mastercard? They allow you to reload with AMEX card with no fee?

        • Are you sure you can reload the card with Amex for $0? Website says only debit cards can be used to reload at 0% fee, but it does say "In-store load/reload
No fee" so maybe you could use the Amex in the shop to load on like $10,000 for 0%. Someone needs to test this.

  • can someone explain what is the actual benefit for below 2:

1.complimentary Accor Plus membership valued at $395 p.a.
    2. access to the American Express Fine Hotels and Resorts program, which provides complimentary benefits at over 1,300 five-star properties worldwide valued at an average of $800 for a two-night stay

    • +1

You get Accor Plus membership for free, which is normally $395/yr - these are the benefits of Accor Plus: https://www.accorplus.com/au/benefits/

American Express Fine Hotels and Resorts program - when you stay at a place that is in the list, you get a few extra perks (what you get depends where you go), details on Amex website: https://www.americanexpress.com/en-au/travel/discover/benefi…

      • +1

You also get an allowance when booking via the Fine Hotels and Resorts program.

    • You also get a free night stay each year at an Accor hotel.

  • +2

just trying to justify the $1450 per annum fee, beyond the points is it :
    $400 Travel Credit
    $395 Accor Membership
    $400 Back per year

And, then is it $800 for a two-night stay ? So in total about $2000.

    • +1

      priority pass?

      • VA lounge access as well if you fly with them (except no on arrival access) - that's $450/year if you held membership directly which does include the on arrival access.

    • +2

Another benefit is a supplementary card holder gets alot of the same perks including most lounge access.

You also get reimbursed for prime membership.

This card is best suited to people who at least travel a bit each year.

    • Generally if you don't travel (and use the airport lounges), wouldn't worth it. The $800 should only be counted if you book those hotels (luxury hotels generally).

      • Yeah theres no point if you don't value status of some kind. I found value in the hotel status - having been upgraded rooms and late check out etc.
I also find Priority Pass pretty good. Probably worth $30-50 per entry IMO - depending on the lounge.

    • +2

      Its $450 travel credit

Just to be clear, the $400 back per year is for dining and its $200 Australia and $200 overseas. The two night stay ($800 value) is if you book via FH and its a free night after a minimum stay (I think its minimum 3 nights?)

Personally, this is how I justify the annual fee (though I am on discounted AF)

      • $450 travel credit (always used)
      • $400 dining credits (always used)
      • ~$300 value IMO Accor free night (always used)
      • ~$300-400 value on hotel status / upgrades (FH program gives US$100 site credit where I normally stay)
      • ~$600 combined cash backs using Amex (flights with United, Qantas hotels, Ampol, etc, etc)
      • $70 Prime membership
      • $450 screen cover on phone (once a year)
      • ~$100 PP (its the basic one and only use it when I dont have lounge access with airline)

FMWV but I think its worth it. Lets not forget the points earning - I just did my LTM spend its over $250K so that 562,500 points which is roughly $3K of value on top.

      • +2

        FMWV

        What does this stand for?

        • typo - I meant YMWV (your miles will vary), AKA everyone will have different experiences..

        • +1

          Fair Market Wholesale Value?

      • how does a charge card show up on the credit report? Does it show $0 or closing of each month?

    • Purchase insurance/guarantee is important and I've used the amex offering.

Travel insurance is important and I've used the amex offering.

I used amex points for travel, and the discount from that alone has far exceeded the annual membership cost.

      • Do you mean you get discounted flight tickets when paying with Amex points?

        • +1

Sometimes there are discounted fares exclusively for amex customers, but in all cases, I pay for flights using amex points right down to $0.

          • @smop: Worth noting that the discounted fares are usually business/first.

  • When they say new members, would supplementary holder eligible for the offer?

    • Yes - as long as meeting the 18 months (sit out) criteria.

      • I would assume if the supplementary holder is currently still using the service - will not be eligible for the offer?

        • They are eligible, they are not a cardholder and, I assume, haven't been one in the last 18 months otherwise you would know the answer already

  • Anyone knows what happens if you already have accor plus, does it extend for another year?

    • +1

I waited until current Accor Plus expired and then processed free renewal through Amex

      • cheers

      • So I currently have Gold valid until 31/05/25. I enrolled for Accor Plus on Amex site in 31/01/2025 but somehow my Accor Plus still hasn't been extended and stay plus has not appear in my Accor Plus account.

Do you think on 01/06/2025, my Accor Plus will be extended to 31/01/2026? or It will then be valid until 31/05/2026?

  • +13

access to the American Express Fine Hotels and Resorts program

This is a great perk if you're thinking about getting the card imo and trying to get value from it, an example of staying at InterContinental Sydney for a staycation/overnight:

    12pm check-in, when available
    A one-category room upgrade at check-in, when available†
    Daily breakfast for two
Unique Amenity: US$ 100 Food and beverage credit to be used during stay
    Complimentary Wi-Fi
    Guaranteed 4pm check-out

If you book the tier below the lounge access, you can get upgraded to access to the lounges using the room upgrade. So, you check in at 12pm, head to the lounge for afternoon tea foods and drinks overlooking the gardens or habour, after that hit the pool or something, before you know it, it's 5pm. Back to the lounge for cocktails and nibbles, once that wraps up, well you have $100USD of food and beverage to use, so better get some more drinks in somewhere. When you get up the next morning, head to the top of the building for your brekky overlooking the harbour, go check out something around the city, come back for the afternoon tea again and then you can check out at 4pm.

And the above hotel can be booked using the $450 travel credit, double dip for the win.

    • Interesting…. I have never booked a AEFHR hotel, mainly because they are so much more expensive than other hotels and with the free Accor membership, I tend to stay at Accor hotels which you will need to book directly with for the max benefit/price.

Might look into the FHR program a bit more after your prompt. Cheers.

      • +1

I've checked in at 5am once at Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur using the FHR when our flight landed at 4am and with the USD100 credit so got a free massage session on top of that.

    • +1

This is correct. For some reason, you can't seem to get it cheaper elsewhere - its only a Amex deal.

There was this other loophole last year where Langham would also give you $200 back if you spend $800. So some of us had the opportunity to book via AEFHR (but pay at the hotel), get the above benefits and then get $200 back…

The US$100 credit was A$145 which you could use for food, drinks and spa service.

  • Can the travel credit be used at hotels?

    • +2

      Yup, from T's and C's:

"You may be able to use the Travel Credit on the American Express Travel website as payment towards Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection, if the selected hotel and room type provides you the option to prepay in advance. Benefit available for the Primary Card Member only to redeem in a single booking. For bookings less than the total travel credit value, any unused portion of the Travel Credit will be forfeited. The Travel Credit cannot be carried forward to any subsequent year."

  • What's min credit limit and min salary?

    • It’s charged card, no limit my friend got approved with 60K income

      • +5

How did they benefit from this card on that income?

  • +3

Important to note about the flight credit:

I'm assuming most people taking these deals are looking for Qantas points, to redeem the travel credit you need to book via the amex site, which means that Qantas flights are only sale fare tickets, which means that you cannot apply for an upgrade. Additionally, because it's not booked via the Qantas site you must pay extra to determine your seating location which can be an issue for families or couples who want to fly together.

  • any tricks with this?

    my plat is saying 50k/150k

    • Its targetted unfortunately

  • damn i still havent cancelled my platinum card to do take this on. i'll probs take this on without bonus points because its such a long wait

  • would I have to cancel my current Amex cards and wait for 18 months to have any shot at getting bonuses like this?

  • is this the metal one ? looks niice . used to be in black before .

    • +1

The black is the centurion card; which is metal and is a tier above this one.

    • +1

this one is also metal though, just not black.

    • +2

Yeah I have both, both are metal and nice
Centurion has a matt black finish which is slightly nicer

  • +1

It’s been asked before but mixed responses, has anyone managed to get the points when they’re an existing cardholder but only credit not charge? Is there any special process to follow?

  • Anyone know the minimum credit limit u can set?

    • +2

It's a charge card so there's no minimum or maximum limit you can "set." It works based on your spending power, which is determined by factors like your payment history, spending habits, income, credit score etc. Note that since it's not a credit card, you need to pay off the balance in full each month (revoke your ozbargain license if you don't already do this)

  • I just checked the Term & Condition and the Reward Transfer page through the link above.
Please correct me if I am wrong, but it seems that:
    1) "up to 4 free Additional Cards for family members - they can enjoy some the card benefits in their own right, like elite hotel status, travel insurance, and one Priority Pass membership." The Term and Condition seems only refer to Primary Card Holder to get majority, if not all, the benefit (especially lounge access)
    2) "transfer points to 10 airline partners, including both Qantas and Virgin Australia". The Transfer Partner page only refers to Velocity for Australia Airline (Qantas not included). I believe for Qantas Points we need Qantas Amex Card.
FYI, I have a Qantas Amex card and a Citi Card which gives me Priority Pass. Will love to swap one of my cards with this one if the description above is correct.

    • Only 1 supplementary PP from memory but Amex or Virgin lounge are happy to let you in as long as you have your Platinum on hand so all 4 supplementary should be eligible.

I think elite status for hotel should work for all supplementary too (from memory)

      • Hotel elite status work on all supplementary cards, given one to my friend for travel insurance and this. You can have 2 cards with Priority pass max per account if I remember correctly. I have it and so does my friend. (He's travels a bit for conferences - OBGN)

        • thanks for confirming. Good thing that hasn't changed.

  • Do these still come with a companion platinum credit card (used to be the platinum reserve) it was never listed as a defined benefit in their list of perks; but you got it if you called up and asked for it.

    • You can still get the reserve card but no extra $400 travel credit

      • ah i guess they closed that loophole.

        • Still grand fathered for us existing users :)

          • @daft009: But why you need the reserve card when you’re rocking the Centurion?

      • But do you still get dining credits or another Accor plus membership?

        • Yeah. They aren't related to the reserve card. They are connected to the main platinum card

  • I'm pretty dirty that the benefits are randomly set either per calendar year or per membership year or anything else. I've missed out utilizing some, and others I have spent thinking I would receive credit. The chat reps are a-holes and don't care.

    • That can work in your favour though as could get dining rewards twice in one membership year

      • Yeah if I had known!

  • Sad i dont have this referral offer on my account

  • Is it still 18 months from last closure to get the bonus?

  • i asked this in the other post, comparing platinum vs platinum business, what is the real difference besides the bigger bonus and the fact that if you have a business its a better option you can get 99 sub cards?
in terms of perks does it gain or loose out on anything compared to civilian version? i googled and asked chatgpt+ cant seem to find a definite answer. even chatgpt says its unknown

    • Maybe have a look at the cards benefit page? Business version doesn't come with the same credits (e.g. dining/travel/amazon).

So no the business version isn't better and not sure what you would get out of 99 supp cards.

      • I guess the 99 supp cards are for employees (business) spendings to count towards your point pool.

  • -1

Wow twice the membership points I got.

  • Applied and didn't get instant approval on screen, I suppose another rejection mail in a week's time

    • same for me, that's shame. May be due to my four cards churn in 2024 :(

      • I churned 8 cards in 2024 haha.
I did get citi premier $600 back on $2000 Apple Pay spend and almost completed, then in February I can get anz rewards again

      • just called Amex and I am declined

  • Anyone succesfully hold both this CHARGE card and an amex CREDIT card?

Weighing up my options - would like both for the bonus points lol.

    • +1

Previously this was fine, but from memory the T&Cs no longer treat them as separate - so probably not worth risking it.

We love the Platinum Charge for our purposes though.

  • Thoughts on Amex platnium vs Citi Prestige ?

    • Citi Prestige has unlimited PP +1 Guest (and includes Non-lounge airport experiences in the form of credits for restaurants, cafes and bars. These are not available for AMEX.)

I'm really doubting to have $700 value out off the Citi Prestige now that PayAll is gone and not offsetting the annual fee anymore.
With the points for this AMEX, I'm seriously considering cancelling my Prestige and going for this AMEX.

      • +1

I just found this comparison and im thinking of going for the Amex as well.

        • Ah yes I forgot Amazon Prime - thats a solid $90 saving if you were gonna pay for it otherwise

          • @digitalane: Is Amazon Prime going to increase in price? I thought it was $79/year

            • +1

@johnmelb: Ah sorry my bad - i thought it was up to $90 but it’s actually up to $84 a year (which was set when it was then still $7 a month). It’s now $10 a month or $79 a year, so I’ve just switched to annual myself so i will get the full rebate. Hopefully at some point they’ll up the credit to $120

      • +2

With the current sign up bonus - i think now is a great time to switch to the Amex - even if you don’t keep it after year 1. As above - I’m lucky enough to pay $750, not $1450 - but even for $1450 in year 1 its worth it in my opinion - assuming you can avail the benefits of the travel credit, dinings credits, and Accor plus. Obviously the 275k points is a huge win - even though Amex has reduced the transfer rates to some airlines recently.

    • +1

I’m just about to cancel my Prestige (since they scrapped PayAll).

I’m lucky enough to only pay $750 for my Amex Platinum so it’s a no brainer for me which is better. I regularly use Accor Plus, the 2 x $200 dining credits, and the $450 travel credit so the card already pays for itself before I use all of the other less obvious benefits.

As far as I can see - outside of any year 1 sign up offer - the Prestige benefits are poor in comparison. (With the exception of their PP giving access to restaurants - but I also have that benefit with my Crypto.com and use it very regularly)

      • How do you get $750 for platnium?

        • +1

Its not something that’s available - i had some issues years back and after loading a complaint they offered to reduce my annual fee to $750 and its stuck ever since! Very lucky i guess

      • Wonder what issues made them to reduce annual fee to $750 for Amex Platinum?

  • +1

Applied yesterday, approved and card will be sent via DHL by Monday. Pretty good service.
