American Express Velocity Platinum Card - 100,000 Bonus Velocity Points with $3,000 Spend in 3 Months, $440 Annual Fee

1120

Looks like they updated to match the 100k Qantas bonus.

Worth the wait.

$440 for 100,000 Velocity points.
The cost of 1 point is $0.0044

I have recently redeemed by return business class trip with Singapore Airlines through Velocity.
137,000 points for SIN-MEL return, which costs $3500-$4500 depending on when you book.
Take $4000 exchanged by 137,000, that is a value of $0.029 per point.

Cost per point: $0.0044
Value redeemed per point: $0.029

Obviously that depends on how you redeem, but generally it's worth it if used right.

    • It's an alright card, although the annual fee is up from $375.

Be aware that amex usually draws higher fees at some places, and also just isn't accepted sometimes.

The card deals are pretty disappointing and those you might actually use get claimed pretty quick. You need to find a deal and then save it to your card to be able to use it, but they have a limited number to claim.

On the plus side, the app is very intuitive to use and you can set up auto payments for the full amount on the due date.

If you make use of the comp flight then it's very worthwhile.

      • Thanks for the extra tips. I think I'll go for it. Will definitely be making use of the lounge access and comp flight. Never used my velocity points but with this bonus I may actually have enough for something.

  • Does anyone know if I would be able to apply for this card if I currently have a Amex Qantas Business Rewards Card which doesn't seem to come up on my credit check.

  • +1

I'm tossing up between this one and the AMEX explorer which gives effectively 50k velocity points but apparently you can seek a cash refund for the flight credit so effectively the fees is 0. Which card gives better value?

    • Are you sure you can seek for cash refund?

      • Cash as in cash credit on the statement, yes rather than voucher credit

        • How can that be done?

  • +1

If I use the flight for a family member, and I am not going, can they also use the lounge?

  • Does this provide free Qantas FF program?

Do I need that to use the points?

  • Dam, I was hoping to refer a friend to this card but looks like they'll be better off applying without my referral link? It says my link will only give them 60k points. Does this sound right?

    • sometimes referral is less than going direct, other times it's more.

    • My referral link has just increase to 100k points for the applicant and 30k for me. So if anyone else was also in my boat wanting to refer friends make sure you check yours!

  • I currently have a corporate AMEX through work… it’s a company card, but registered to me.
Does anybody know if this excludes me from the bonus points?

  • +1

It shows me 120k velocity points

    • As in the Offer is showing you 120k points?

      • Clicking on the deal link I see:-

        Personalised Offer

        Receive 120,000 bonus Velocity Points1
when you apply online and are approved and spend $3,000 on eligible purchases on your new American Express Velocity Platinum Card within the first 3 months. T&Cs apply. New American Express Card Members only1

        • Got the same offer. I wonder if it’s because I used to have a David Jones AMEX and when AMEX ended their relationship with DJs I cancelled the card.

          • @AlexG: Very unlikely for there to be any actual personalisation, probably just randomised … for whatever dumb purpose that serves.

Previous example - AmEx Explorer: 100,000 Membership Rewards Points (with $4000 Spend in 3 Months) & $400 Travel Credit, $395 Annual Fee

Sometimes the offer shows 50,000, you have to try a few times for the 100,000 offer to appear.

            • @OnlyHans: I'm now seeing 120,000 points as well when I click the link.
I literally just applied and got accepted this week for 100k - haven't even received my card yet.

Is it a thing for Amex to give you the new offer if already accepted? Maybe through the chat?

              • @WastedWombat: I don't recall reading any comments about people trying that.

I imagine the odds are pretty low, but it can't hurt to ask the question.

              • @WastedWombat: I signed up 2 weeks ago when the offer was only 60,000 points. Both live chat, call centre and supervisor rejected my request to receive the new offer.

                • @Barnlord: That sucks to hear. I ended up calling their support line who said they weren’t able to see it in the 120k points but saw that I was approved for 100k. But they gave me their personal email to send through the screenshots and said they’ll look into it.

Fingers crossed. I’ll report back when I hear

                  • +1

@WastedWombat: Came back to reply that after speaking with AmEx support - I received a callback around a week later and they are crediting my account with the extra 20k from the personal offer!

Should be added to the account with the next statement.

  • So is it unlimited virgin lounge entry as long as I have a virgin domestic flight?

  • +1

It is saying "Receive 120,000 bonus Velocity Points when you apply online and are approved and spend $3,000 on eligible purchases on your new American Express Velocity Platinum Card within the first 3 months. T&Cs apply. New American Express Card Members only1" for me.

Am I missing something or the bonus has gone up to 120k?

  • Not sure if the bonus has gone up, I too see 120k as bonus, applied n approved, waiting for card

  • Has anyone had experience signing up to this card as a retiree, with a steady income from super and fixed income pension?

Looking to get this for parents to take advantage of the points. While they are not employed, they have sufficient coverage of the monthly spend from the super/pension so wondering how Amex will view this in their assessment?

  • If I book for my family of 4 Virgin domestic flights with this card, will all of them be allowed into the lounge?

  • Has anyone successfully got a pro rata refund for its annual fee? $440 is quite a bit to swallow

  • Looks like the bonus has gone back down to 100k. Not seeing the 120k anymore.
Anyone can still see the 120k bonus?

    • Appears to be still there for myself.

    • I still see 120.

    • I think it’s randomised, I didn’t see it yesterday but refreshed this morning and it showed up.

    • Yeah I only ever see 100K.. have clicked the link 4 or 5 times over the last week.. weird some are getting 120k

  • Do we get a pro rata refund of the annual fee if we cancel the card within the year?

  • Would this card be better than the business velocity amex with 170k bonus $220 annual fee, 2 lounge passes?

    https://www.americanexpress.com/en-au/credit-cards/velocity-…

    • That's for business operators. Different market, yes it is a better card though.

      • Its basically $200 less annual fee but you don't get the complimentary flight. Both have unlimited lounge passes with virgin flight. But business card has gold status with more perks. Complimentary flight can be valued to around $600 if you can do a PER-MEL/SYD flight round trip. Depends what you value more?

        • I think the fact you need an abn and business that turns over $x rules out a lot of people.

I have found this card available with a 130,000 points bonus while booking a flight last night.
Keep in mind I assume this one is targeted so may not show up on everyone's account.

I do not have a direct link as it seems I can only find this deal by following specific steps. I'll list them here,
    1. first go to Shopback (ONLY the mobile app seems to work for this, not the browser) and search virgin Australia and go through as if you were making a booking
    2. follow the steps as if you were making a booking, I used CBR to BNE on a random day in April for example, and go through until you get to the payment page
    3. once on the payment page, do not actually pay for the flight or enter any payment details and instead scroll down to the bottom of the screen and the 130,000 points offer shows up for me with a button to go to the offer, (I'd assume this is targeted so may not show up for others!)

Two screenshots as to what I'm seeing with 130,000 pts (however i now see the spend criteria is $3500, not $3000)
Do let me know if it shows up on your account or not please! I'm really curious now

      Great! Cheers mate!

      • +1

And with today's extra 30k pts, it's possible to get upto 160,000 pts for the amex velocity platinum with a $3500 spend

        • Amex… I got denied 2 years ago and again yesterday… Not sure why because I've always got approved by westpac, nab, citi, etc.

          • @RENERO: I think they have placed a churn filter. If you churn too many credit cards, they will automatically reject you.

        • +1

Do you have confirmation of getting the extra 30k? Amex told me they only had 130k on their system for me to receive. They said i should check with velocity regarding the extra 30k points.

          • @kimba88: Hi,

Did you confirm any info regarding this? Do we get an extra 30k on top of the 130k

    • Hi,

Can you please confirm if you got the extra 30k points on top of the 130k

    • Hi,
Do you have any confirmation regarding getting the added 30k on top of the 130k so 160k total?

    • @Planes are cool
Did you get the extra 30k by following your method?
I’m getting 2 options. Either a personalised offer for 120000 or through the velocity app when you continue all the way to purchase a flight then the 130000 offer come up.
Difference between the two. One is a personalised offer where the other just says limited offer

  • Did anyone find out anything regarding the extra 30k. So I can see the deal for 130k but do we get an extra 30k. I think I doubt it but can anyone confirm

    • There's an offer within velocity to get 30k additional points where you need to activate before applying for the card. (not sure if this is the missing 30k everyone is talking about).
