Amazon Kindle Paperwhite $151.70 Delivered (No US Forwarding)

230

I can't comment on this company but they seem to have a fairly big online presence. Express Fedex also available for an extra $7. Unlike most Kindle Paperwhite buying options at the moment, this one doesn't require any US forwarding and seems to be the cheapest way of getting one here at the moment. Arguably the best eReader on the market at the moment along with the Kobo Glo.

In japan, they sell them cheaper that in US, as Amazon are trying to establish their kindle store.
I paid around AU$90 for it a month ago when it was released.
If you guys know someone in japan coming over, or a mail forwarder from there, should come out cheaper.

    • Interesting, I do know someone there. Maybe worth a look before committing

Japan Post does not allow sending items that contain a lithium battery out of Japan via air, so unfortunately it will cost a lot more to use mail forwarders (they have to go via private couriers like DHL/UPS and prepare safety documentation).

      • +1

I can confirm this as I bought a Kindle Paperwhite in Japan and it's currently stranded at my friend's place in Japan because of this rule.
The DHL/UPS fees are about $200AU to post the device over.

Fortunately it seems that Japan will change their rules on 1/1/2013, so I will finally be able to get my kindle.

Looking at the link, it says: Unfortunately this item is no longer available in this region.
It seems the one linked to is also the ads supported version and no idea if it's the 3g model or wifi.

A pretty good deal, quite a competitive price with buying from Amazon directly and using a US forwarder ($119 + $30).

Also a pretty damn good Kindle - higher resolution and screen loading times than the previous e-reader models

I have dealt with Expansys a lot over the years. They used to have an office in Collingwood, Victoria but this had now closed down. I believe all sales are now dealt with through the Hong Kong office. So be aware you may not be dealing within Australian company and returns/repairs may be an issue. With that said, can much go wrong with a Kindle?

    • +1

Well Kindle do seem to have a reputation for defective screens………i bought 6' Elink from Dick smith for $99 first week of December and just after 20 days lines started appearing on the bottom right hand corner. Thankfully Dick smith replaced it for a new one with out any hassle. Guy at the store said this issue is quite common

      • a very good deal never the less

      • Amazon are also well known for amazing after sales service.

I called them and admitted outright that I had broken the screen on mine by accident (thrown around in a backpack without a case), and they still replaced it for free.

  • Kobo Glo is an excellent alternative to this. I myself own a kobo glo. Been using it for a week now and it is great, reading on it is heaps better than on a tablet.

Also, Kobo tend to have better sideloading support as they support ePub which afaik the kindle does.

Think of Kindle as Apple and Kobo and android.

    • I've just ordered one (a Kobo Glo) for myself, it's a pity I've got to wait, apparently there's a shortage of them everywhere, couldn't find one anywhere retail yesterday, apparently it's a nationwide problem.

      • +1

Yeah they seem to be selling out everywhere or maybe they didn't stock much. You should take a look at the software calibre if you're not using it yet. Makes it a cinch to handle ebooks

    • I would think of Kindle as Apple, and Kobo as Nokia, since I would far rather choose Nokia, but the OS is restricting… Eg. my Kobo doesn't have any ability to sort books, whereas, apparently, the Kindle can have bookshelves etc. I have lots of books, and lots of storage, but it takes forever to browse them on the Kobo. If the new Kobos had better sorting abilities, by tags, shelves, genre, etc. maybe I'd get one.

      • +2

That's where you are wrong. I'm using the kobo glo with calibre and it automatically creates bookshelves according to series. You could set a genre bookshelf too if you so wish.

Basically you can create bookshelves according to whatever tags you wish.

        • Really? So they've upgraded their system from the Kobo Wi-Fi. Then I'll definately consider the Kobo Glo.

    • I don't want to think of anything as anything else ok.

I bought a Kobo Glo from Officeworks and price matched Harris Tech, it came to $131 or s/t.

I really like it, apparently the same screen as Kindle, at least resolution…I'm not sure, it's really nice to read on though, even at night with just the backlight. I'm so glad I don't have to use a clip on light, that would be so lame!

DAMN! Trying to get my PDF magazine to work on the kindle, driving me nuts! I'll just read it on zinio :(

Not that great a deal considering it's the one with advertising.

    • +1

I would like to see how you can buy a USD 139 dollar kindle paperwhite without ads to come out as AUD 151 shipped to Australia.

  • I wish they sold the non advertising version as well. I'd happily pay $20 bucks more for that.

    • +1

I'm pretty sure you can pay Amazon the $20 as an upgrade, and they'll turn off advertising remotely.

  • I have the version supposed to come with ads or promotions displayed when idle but, fortunately or unfortunately it never happens.is it just mine or an Aussie thing not sure.

also I do wish it has audio capacity as I have a fair collection of audio books so pity cant do both on one device

  • +1

Can no longer be found on the site…

    • Same. I saw this last night for $133ish and was going to check if the price went up or this price included delivery.

  • "Sorry, this product no longer exists", was this the 3G, or WiFi only model?

PS. Hate the adds… Amazon shouldn't have even considered it. Au ones won't have adds, but they will probably cost more, and who knows when the Paperwhite is even coming to Australia.

The kindle paperwhite is like the macbook pro retina of ereaders. Ive bought most kindle models and easily best. I simply used my amazon account and shipito.com when paperwhite launched and i read the verge 9/10 review.

The device is so light and small… even with cover but same screen sizehttp://www.itworld.com/personal-tech/330478/first-look-google-tv-hisense-pulse

I bought with ads but annoying as doesnt allow u to close kindle cover (official black leather perfect) then immediately open to recommence reading exactly where finished.

Rather u open a full page ad.

I emailed amazon and complained there was no way to turn off and pay $20 for no ads.
They immediately turned off ads for no cost.

The lighting on this device during day or night is awesome. As is higher pixel res and touchscreen. Browser is heaps better for gmail hence lifetime free 3g worlwide for $50 is more tempting than previously.

Amazing device for price. Use it for a fortnight and other kindles seem prehistoric.

    • So Amazon turned off your adds for free?

Too bad Australian Overdrive libraries only have EPUB, and Kindle has decided not to support the great EPUB format. Although the American Overdrive has Kindle format, so IDK why Australia hasn't got it.

  • +2

@ mitchh yup amazon turndled off for free as there was no way to do it if an international amazon account within /manageyourkindle however they did ship a firmware update which may have allowed international users to turn off ads for $20. Either way id never order kindle with ads again. Also its easy to downloads heaps of torrents of latest book releases and transfer onto kindle. Except those seem to lose some of the new paperwhite 'xray' features…

    • I don't even notice the ads. There are instructions on Whirlpool on how to get them turned off (although not for free - well done on that!)

      • Generally I don't, but with the Paperwhite it's beyond obnoxious since it's designed with a magnetic clasp. If you flip open the case, it normally lets you resume reading immediately. With the Special Offers version, you still have the advert splashscreen that you need to swipe again. These little things add up.

    • Wow thanks benbarren! I emailed them via their support page and they turned special offers off for me as well for free :D

    • So if you buy from the US, may as well get the one with adds. Unless they changed it.

    • This is a great bit of advice. I also have the Paperwhite via Shipito with the case and it annoys me that while flipping it open, it still requires another swipe to resume reading. Previously, I had no problems with the Special Offers kindles since you had to flick a switch anyway to resume from sleep and the ads just replaced the default screensaver.

  • OP please mark this deal as expired since the "product no longer exists".
