it is free if you are the only owner of the phone, in most situation the phone is a second hand and there is no way to unlock "for free" it other then 3rd party.

      • so .. stolen?

        • so .. stolen?

No, IMEI blocked iPhones can not be 'unlocked'.

Instead they get replaced by Apple (no questions asked), usually as OOW, and then the replacement can be unlocked.

        • But the replacement IMEI number won't be in Optus' system.

Also, people (including Apple staff) can check the IMEI block status on http://www.amta.org.au/pages/amta/Check.the.Status.of.your.H…

        • But the replacement IMEI number won't be in Optus' system.

Yes, it will. One only has to make a call with an OPTUS SIM. Or just tell OPTUS that it is a replacement.

Also, people (including Apple staff) can check the IMEI block status on http://www.amta.org.au

However, they don't do this. They are not interested.

Neither are the police - have you seen the number of stolen/(lost?) iPhones listed on eBay on any day?

          For example:-

          iPhone 5
          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Iphone-5-/110993424684

          iPhone 4S
          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/121043285599

          iPhone 4
          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/261146700393

        • Carriers will only unlock an IMEI number they sold in the first place. Or they ask for proof of replacement.

One would hope this to be the case - but no.

I have knowledge of several cases where either stolen or lost iPhones have been replaced by Apple, and then carrier unlocked.

        1) Get a OPTUS SIM (go to a friend 'on' OPTUS and ask to use his SIM for a minute or two). Make a call. Then call OPTUS and request the free unlock. If necessary, give your friend's details etc.

        2) Ask the OPTUS Social Media rep(s) on Whirlpool.net.au and/or make a request via their Soctal Media page.

paying $10 for something that is normally free is not only NOT a deal - but suggests you should be locked away in a mental asylum.

Can't we do it for free??? How did this get 1.3k likes???

  • +1

    This is not a deal.

    lol, no deal!

  • To the neggers you should read http://personal.optus.com.au/web/ocaportal.portal?_nfpb=true…

It seems that there are situations where an unlock fee is charged (eg any prepaid phone purchased after Sept 3).

That would mean that $10 for some people is a bargain compared to the normal Optus charge.

It's better to know the facts before negging I think.

Except that one will find that PrePaid OPTUS iPhones can not (will not) be unlocked by this guy. (Unless they are outside the terms covered in the link you posted).

      • He claims "ANY Optus locked iPhones" so if that is not the case, I expect that he will have to fix the wording to make it factual (eg for postpaid services less than 6 months old).

Rep, can you unlock all prepaid iPhones or not?

YES like i said ANY iPhone which is locked to Optus and including the iPhone 5 which is clearly less then 6 Months in the market. thank you.

You do not appear to have understood.

You were asked about "PrePaid" OPTUS iPhones. As opposed to iPhones supplied with PostPaid contracts.

  • i send a req for an optus locked iphone, no replays yet

pretty dodge website, plus i got mine unlocked for free

  • When you are on the page there is a popup box that comes up asking if you need assistance. I used that and he linked me to (https://msc.optuszoo.com.au/iphone/unlock). Said my iPhone isn't eligible so he checked that out for me and ended up just ringing me for a verbal confirmation (Name and DoB) then told me to ring 1300075935 to unlock my iPhone. The company he sent me to isn't open until the 2nd.

    "Gaurav: at 15:34:27
Please unlock your iPhone using the following number 1300075935.
    you: at 15:35:52
I will ring them when they reopen on the 2nd.
    Gaurav: at 15:36:26
    Sure.
    you: at 15:36:47
Who are they and what information will I need to provide for them?
    Gaurav: at 15:38:32
It is an automated system which will unlock the phone for you.
    you: at 15:39:22
    Ok, Thanks.
    Gaurav: at 15:39:36
    1300075395
    Gaurav: at 15:39:49
    Sorry the number is 1300075395.
    you: at 15:39:47
    Oh ok."

God dammit Gaurav, you had one job.

    • 1300-075-395 is OPTUS's phone number used for free unlocking.
"If the mobile device you are trying to unlock is an iPhone, please call 1300 075 395 and follow the instructions."

Did you pay him $10? If so, how?

      • Didn't pay him. The automated system went through and all I have to do is wait for them to text me and then do a restore in iTunes and it will be unlocked.

So, you made use of the OPTUS free unlocking service.

No need to 'restore' the iOS. Just update the carrier settings. (Insert SIM from a different carrier, and connect to computer running iTunes).

  • pretty sure you can just give them a call… they will unlock it for you - if they say no, call back, say you're going overseas and you need to put an international sim in - why pay for this???? REDIC!!!

  • The whole locked phone stuff is bulltish.
I acknowledge that there are reasons why telcos support it, but imagine if you bought a car and could only by fuel from one brand of outlet for the next 2 years.
If you sign a 24mth contract, OK, you are stuck until such time as the contract expires or you buy your way out of it. Otherwise, it should be play on and get the best, temporary deal you can get
