This is brighter with better black uniformity, but the X90L will have superior upscaling and motion handling.
Probably not $2.5k more, but 98" in indeed more immersive. I had such impression when upgraded from a 75 to 85, and won't doubt 98 is better than 85.
The 98C755 is also on super special at JB hi fi $3666
Is the 98" 855 version really worth $1500+ (or 40-odd %) more than this? I'm not judging, just wondering if someone with experience can make a compelling case.

Not 40% more worth since its same processor and firmware. But if you want anti reflective coating then 855 is a must. I got my 98 c755 for around $2800 and I'm happy to close the curtains and few spot lights.

C855 has been as low as 4.5K
If you want the extreme then probably worth it? 3500nits vs 2400 nits makes a difference in HDR/Dolby Vision videos, but only if you have top-end films/games to take advantage of the peak brightness and dimming zones. The difference between sound systems can be ignored as you're going to get an audio system for the best experience anyway (and none of TCL TVs support using TV as centre channel anyway).
C855 has a better anti-reflective coating (both models have low-reflection treatment, though), but TBH only if you're going to watch in a well-lit room. Turning off lights with light-blocking curtains is way more effective.
FYI I believe all TCL 2025 models are using the same chip inside, so experience software-wise should be all the same.
