Low price on this CPU that works out to be really good value now that it's fallen in price lower than the 7700X. It holds up well in gaming and given that it has 8 cores and 16 threads it's good for multi core tasks. Stack with 16% cashback at TopCashback for further savings.

Out of the box it has 65W TDP and I recommend upping it to 105W TDP in the BIOS for better performance.

Setting overseas websites to AUD or letting PayPal do the currency conversion results in an inflated rate. To get the correct rate you need a card without international fees and do the following:

  • Set the website currency to USD
  • Checkout with PayPal
  • Select your card with no international fees
  • Click "See currency options"
  • Select USD to bill the card in USD instead of AUD
  • Proceed with checkout

Now you'll get the correct MasterCard or VISA exchange rate depending on the card.

  • Just bought it, thanks

  • -2

    Any concerns with fake chips?

    • -2

Wouldn't feel confident with warranty claims here

    • +10

Not here. It's a legitimate store and even if you did end up with a fake somehow you'd just request a refund. Easy peasy it's Big Save.

  • +11

its sad that 9800X3D and such are just jacked up prices for like months now

    • +13

Thank god I bought a 9800X3D and 4080S PC during the Black Friday sale.
Seeing how much those two have actually APPRECIATED in value is just (profanity) insane to me. I’m definitely keeping them around for a while…

      • +5

Yeah I was pretty salty that I let the HODLers convince me against Big Friday 4080s prices, ended up paying $150 more for the privilege of confirming the 5XXX series was dog shit. Epic build now anyway haha

Gotta admit I was shocked to see the 9800x3d over $900 at PCCG tho

        • +1

Yeah I agree. Over the years I've realised that, tbh, there's no point HODLing for discount on tech you could use or you need right now

          • @aaronsd: Hold made sense in the short term after the covid price rises. It's just a normal market now, or as normal as it was before covid with the gfx duopoly.

      • Wondering what was the price you paid your Ryzen 7 7800x3d cpu during last years Black Friday sale? ☺️

I think the low Aussie dollar has lots to do with the higher prices at the moment

Noticed to prices new and used have gone up slightly for Graphics cards due to the high price relesses for the new NVIDIA 5000 series Graphics Cards

        My 2 cents ☺️👍

  • +1

Pretty good, paid about $400 for my Ryzen 7 3700X 3.6GHz in 2020 - still going strong btw.

    • +1

Never felt like I had any reason to upgrade 3700x. Feel like CPU is pretty much the last component in any PC that needs to get upgraded for almost all use cases. Money is far better spent on Monitors, RAM, GPUs etc. CPUs are rarely the bottleneck and upgrades rarely seems to have any meaningful impact on use.

      Just my 2 cents.

      • +4

I'd say for gaming if you really want to squeeze those extra frames out, particularly at the higher resolutions the X3D CPUs will have a difference.

        • +1

Don't you mean lower resolutions? Higher resolutions are usually GPU bound

          • @DeToxin: Yes that's true. You don't want either to be a bottleneck.

      • It's worth keeping an eye on GPU utilisation. I went from a 3700x to 5700x3d, I noticed less stuttering in some games and I could see the GPU utilisation was increased.

That said, at the time I was only out of pocket $120 to upgrade after selling the 3700x, so it felt well worth it.

      • Never felt like I had any reason to upgrade 3700x.

Cheers, I still feel this way and don't see a need either after 4 years. Maybe if the difference was $200 and get $200 for the old one or something.. more ram and better GPU make more difference (also haven't bothered upgrading 2060S, only the casual game here and there but goes fine @ 1440p).

  • +3

I’ve got a 10yr old rig that needs upgrading, what’s a good mobo and gpu to pair with this?

    • I'm sure there are many a thread on it - i've got the older gen AM4 socket - using a:
MSI B450M Mortar Max ATX Motherboard. I'd look for something similar (or Asus/ Gigabyte equivalent)

I don't think I'd even build an intel rig again, this is still going like a treat.

    • GPU depends on your budget, the best you can afford usually - maybe 9070/xt if the RRP is true, we will see in a couple weeks

    • +2

If you've held onto your rig for 10 years.. I'd advice just be on the lookout for 9070/xt deals from GALA, Techfast, etc that might pop up in the next few weeks. They're generally a good value for money. Swap out a few parts over the next few years, if needed and you're solid for another 5-10 years depending on your use case.

      • Sometimes you got to change mobos for a new socket type, and gets committing to the same CPU and Ram.
It is easy though just upgarding the GPU and amount of Ram before doing anything else. Basically a new build otherwise.

ps. Is it worth upgrading AM4 CPUs from Ryzen 7 to 9 etc? Could consider it but it's a pain to get the cooler off etc

        • +1

In my opinion, the best drop-in upgrade you can do for an AM4 system these days is probably an R7 5700X3D.

This would be the fastest reasonable option unless you need the higher core chips for productivity.
Unfortunately, they didn't make any X3D variants of the R9, but honestly the 5700X3D holds up so well even against newer AM5 chips that it's so worth when you can find it cheaply on AliExpress (sometimes)

Pretty much the last CPU you'd want in an AM4 system before upgrading it anyway

          • @itchy scratchy: Thanks will have a look for one of those at a sweet price perhaps. Thisbsuditem is running so well but will see. Can also add another 32 for nothing much.

  • Can get a 7500f for $177aud. Is this worth the extra dollhairs?

    • +1

If 20% extra performance is worth the dollars to you?

    • If you play modern games at 4k you'll probably be GPU bound either way.

    • Do you have a link on where to get it for $177 AUD? I'd be really interested

      • Doesn't let me post the link. Just search 7500f on AliExpress. Use the $16 off coupon and combine with the 16% cashback ($30off

Sorry, its actually $206 when tax and shipping is added.

        • ah thanks, much more attractive at $177. Thanks anyways!

    • I have a 5070ti and 9600x, playing at 4k most things are GPU bound.

Got ihe CPU from Aliexpress for a touch under $300. Can't complain. Thing undervolts/overclocks pretty well too, pity the 5070ti is loud as all heck when pushed.
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76eW2s-AqEY&t=503s

      • Damn, so many CPUs to pick. The 9600x isn't too badly priced either.

        I'm.plannong on using a 7800 xt

  • 30% performance higher with 7900x. Is this better? well about 70~100 more expensive though
    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007798968503.html?spm=a2…

    • It depends on the use case.

The 7900x has two 6-core chiplets and the 9700x has one 8-core chiplet.

For workloads that will run many threads, the 7900x with its 12 cores (24 threads) is clearly better than the 8 cores (16 threads) of the 9700x as the general benchmarks show.

However, since the two chiplets on the 7900x don't have a shared cache, the single chiplet 9700x is generally better for gaming as shown by gaming benchmarks.

Having a newer generation CPU core, the 9700x has better single thread performance and it's more power efficient and generates less heat.

  • What would be a good mid range motherboard for this?

    • +1

      Gigabyte B650 gaming X AX v2

      • +2

Thanks, bought the same model but the updated B850 version for $50 more. Coming from an i7-3770 from 2012, folks. I hope Facebook and cat videos on Youtube loads faster hehehe. (Gotten too old for gaming). I remember my Intel 3770 and the Gigabyte MB costing me $350 for CPU, $35 for CPU cooler and $250 for the motherboard. 13 years later, it is only slightly more, $370 for 9700X (cashback) + $50 for cooler and $350 for motherboard. Basically $140 more than the 2012 prices for a similar mid range CPU and motherboard setup. I am ok with that.

    • +2

MSI B650 Tomahawk Wifi, probably one of the best sub $300 boards

  • +3

You can get a 7700 for about $250 on AliExpress also. Much better value while only losing a couple of frames at 1440p. That's with a RTX4090 though…

    • Link please

      • +2

Just got mine the other week for 238 aud, it was the Comet Crash store. Looks a bit sus at first but found some reddit thread confirming their stuff and no regret so far.

      • Guessing this with some extra discount? I can't see that price - https://amdglobal.aliexpress.com/store/1102875289/pages/all-…

      • +2

        item/1005008072964215.html
        Don't forget cashback and coupon

        • thanks mate. it seems like a bargain haha -5~10% performance drop / about 35% cheaper

  • +2

Any deals for the AM4? All I can see for 5700x3Dx are mostly scam or overpriced atm.

    • +2

Unfortunately the excess stock of the 5700X3D seems to have dried up.

  • For anyone researching B650 Motherboards to pair this with, I can recommend taking a look at Hardware Unboxed's channel:
Zen 5 Ready AMD B650 Buying Guide
AMD B650 Roundup: 35 Motherboards Tested

B650 is IMO the best value one to get, the 800 series really doesn't offer much, if anything, over the 600 range for often too much of a price increase.

  • I got Aliexpress Ryzen 9 9900X. It was 150$ cheaper few weeks back. If Monster Hunter Wilds deal was active, would of purchased it in Aus.

You will get 0 Warranty from AMD as these are OEM units, not boxed consumer. The store I bought it from claimed on their listing 3 years warranty, but when asked they said 1 year warranty. Highly doubt they would honour anything to be fair. Still went ahead anyways, havent had a CPU die on me… knock on wood.

Also if you purchase the ones in Australia now, you get the Monster Hunter Wild game for free.

Might not be worth it if you want to get MH wilds anyways, as you will get essentially 0 warranty aswell.

GL to me anyways, working for 3 weeks so far.

  • Anyone else get this when they try to apply the coupon?

"For security reasons your request can't currently be processed"

  • How much can you expect to get the r7 5700x3d for these days? Seems to be around $400 give or take.
There's an AliExpress sale tomorrow but even with $40 off it's still more than amazon ($413).
The cheapest seems to be $398 at online PC shops.

Tempted to upgrade my R7 3700x if the change over isn't too much (as an end game for AM4, but nothing wrong with it now still).

  • +2

Mine has arrived and is legit. Installed into an ASRock B850i motherboard with 2x16GB CL30 DDR5 6000 RAM with EXPO. Working great!

    • I haven't really heard of fake CPUs (unless they are a complete con and don't work at all)?

It's a bit touch and go spending too much on AliExpress but good to know.

      • Was happening on AM4 - I think these are a little harder thanks to the die shape rather than basic rectangle. Also use to happen a little back in the Athlon days believe it or not.

      • Fake CPUs are absolutely a thing.

        • Don't buy from Ali lol
