I've done over 400 flights in my life. Batik stands out as the worst experience I've ever had.

    • +3

      Fair enough… but why?

      • +17

What should have been an 8 hour journey home from Singapore took 28 hours.

We were due to board first hop flight from SG to KL at 20:40, the gate didn't open till 21:20, then once we had boarded the plane we sat on the tarmac for an hour and forty minutes.

By the time we get to SG it's nearly two hours after our flight to Perth has left, and there's no further flights that night. We get walked through the entirety of KL airport past multiple hotels IN the airport, through customs and loaded onto a minibus and taken to a hotel just outside the airport that is clearly where they put their staff up.

The hotel room was terrible and the shower was busted so badly that most of the water went down the wall of the shower instead of spraying at you. We also weren't able to access our luggage so we're stuck in the clothes that we'd been in the previous day.

We get back to the airport around Midday and aren't offered anything at all in compensation for the (profanity), I had to FIGHT to get free food on the flight from KL to Perth.

We get on the plane and while trying to sort out the fact that they were trying to seat my partner and I in different rows…. We find out the flight they've put us on isn't even a flight direct to Perth, it's KL to Bali, then Bali to Perth.

The staff on the plane outright lied to us when queried on this and told us it was a short range aircraft and couldn't make it to Perth in one hop (737-800), then told us we'd only be on the ground in Bali for 20 minutes.

We left KL nearly an hour late (14:00 instead of scheduled 13:20), get to Bali and we were on the ground for nearly 90 minutes where weren't allowed to leave the plane. Finally get into Perth at 23:50.

No refund, no apology, no credit Nothing.

        • Shocking experience!

          • @Windows7forever: Bad enough for me and my partner (41 and 35 respectively at the time).

Now imagine the young family who had a 4 year old and 6 month old and the hell they went through.

When we hit KL airport they had to get the airline to buy them nappies for the baby because they'd only packed enough for the 8 hour flight, not for the 28hr fustercluck we ended up going through.

        • -4

that could happen on any airline. there's no compensation these days. you are lucky you got a hotel room at all.

          • +1

@paullovesbargains: You're right, those delays etc could happen on any airline…

But any competent airline wouldn't treat their passengers like shit the whole time and allow their staff to lie directly to the passengers.

I've had bigger delays than this and entire flights cancelled but I knew what was going on (rather than being left in the dark) and was compensated for my lost time etc.

My problem is not that Batik stuffed up, my problem is how badly they handled the fallout from said stuff up.

As I said we had NO indication the flight wasn't direct to Perth and that we were going to be on the plane for 10 hours… Until we were already on the plane and in our seats. Not one of the staff thought to mention that to us. We learned that was the case when they made the announcement at the start of the flight.

        • Far out I might let this one through then

    • few years ago, i took an internal flight while visiting China (can't remember which plane, but some small carrier). Someone came onto the plane with buckets on a pole as their carry on. Then when they were giving out food, people started to line up…

      • -4

yea you should be in restraints and/or on a no-fly list.

      • You unlocked a memory for me

    • +7

Can attest to this, flew return to Bali, worst service and plane in history. Took water before flight, wouldnt give any tap water, could only purchase water via credit card, couldnt use my debit card. Service is horrific too, they do not give an F.

      • +3

+1 to the service comment lol.

Just be aware, after you book - any service related questions they make you talk to their bot on whatsapp.

        Is it worth the hassle?

        • +1

Oh and also my seat was broken on one of the flights, would not recline. I told the flight attendant and they looked at me with a blank stare and did nothing.

        • +1

I've had that joy from LionAir group companies (of which Batik Malaysia is one).

Involuntary flight change, force changed the flight by them, no way of contacting a human in time to change to a flight that was actually suitable. Purchased another ticket instead (more expensive), all they will do is refund the original ticket even when they were clearly at fault.

Using the WhatsApp, after waiting a solid hour for a human at the other end of the text chat, as soon as it gets too hard for them you'll just drop out.

  • +7

The worst airline. Just pay the extra $30 and go airasia or jetstar for your own sanity.

    • +3

And to think that Jetstar and AirAsia is already close to the bottom of the barrel lol. Batik must be scraping the crud.

    • Just pay the extra $30 and go airasia or jetstar for your own sanity.

…or pay $30 less, for your own sadism.

    • they are air asia. its rebadged.

  • +6

Per above, 100% not worth the stress.

  • No deals Brisbane to Denpasar with Batik air website. Red flag? Bad experience with refund for medical reasons even with a doctor's certificate. Communication very poor and using a bot.

  • +1

Had terrible experience with this flight. Worst airlines.

  • +12

If this price list was what Batik Air pays me to fly with them I’d have to decline. I had some unpleasant flights with them, never again.

Details for those asking: the plane smelled of vomit. It was mostly the other passengers that made things unpleasant but the crew didn’t care - being a rock bottom budget airline I guess attracts a certain kind of passenger and yeah these flights were messier than a cinema full of teenagers, passengers are just rude and messy. Not the airlines fault but I haven’t seen this on other airlines before and I’ve flown a fair bit. There’s no free food of course (not even peanuts) but the crew didn’t offer me to buy any, you need to get their attention and ask them if you want to buy food - I wasn’t going to buy any anyway, I ate before, just an observation on how they do things. At the gate everyone rushes to the gate when boarding, they don’t segment you into groups or expect you to line up, it’s free for all and again the staff don’t care, everyone will end up in their seats one way or another. Anyway, it’s a budget flight I didn’t expect much and I got there safely. I just learned that I’d now rather pay a little more and get a lot more. And I really didn’t enjoy the vomit smell or the crews lack of care about anything. Nothing a shower afterwards can’t fix.

  • On the 737 max?

  • +4

Would appreciate some explanation why they are considered so bad. Cancellations? Delays? Uncomfortable? Poor service?

    • +2

      or working for Qantas?
Some people pay for Passion Pop and expect Krug

  • +3

Counterpoint - I flew with them from DEL > KUL > MEL and had quite a pleasant experience. Especially considering it was < $400.

    • -1

Lol I feel if your journey started in Delhi, your expectations wouldn't have been high to begin with - hence the pleasant experience?

  • +4

for those saying it's the worse experience, can you elaborate — was there a turd in the aisle, piss on the seats, tape holding the wing on? what does worse experience mean — it's a $110/ea way, cheaper than a taxi ride to the airport or even 3 days parking at the airport — surely expectations are light?

the taxes alone would have to be $100 ish ? how does this mob making any dough… unless safety is compromised I can't see how you could argue with this deal

    • +3

probably airfreight, you're just paying for the crew

    • I've flown Batik several times with no issues. Same on Jetstar and multiple others. It just takes one bad experience and you firstly blame the airline and secondly will complain at any chance about it.

  • +3

For what it's worth, I took Batik Air recently and found the airline to be much more comfortable than Airasia with more legroom at a much cheaper rate.
Obviously, cannot compare to full service carriers but had a positive experience and would fly again.

  • +8

Is Jetstar here in the comments with us LMAO? Ive used Batik and Jetstar and hands down Batik has been the better more reliable airline.

    (profanity) you Jetstar.

  • +6

Those who are saying this is the worst airline must have not taken Jetstar or the now defunct Tigerair.

    • yes some precious people. try taking 12-30hr buses and then tell me how terrible that 2-6hr flight was because they ran out of peanuts & you had to wait for your bags. No adventurous spirit!

    • +3

I've taken JetStar plenty of times, I still wouldn't pick them given the choice. But if the choice were a 1 hour flight with Batik vs a round the world trip with JetStar, JetStar would win hands down every day of the week and twice on sundays.

  • +7

I've flown both Batik and Jetstar and would put them relatively on par. If you're wanting a simple, no frills A to B experience, both are fine. Sure I've had delays on both airlines, but so too have I on full service airlines. It's luck of the draw really, but I'm happy to pay less on the journey with more to spend at my destination. :)

  • +4

I have flown them twice in the last week. On time, no frills, no entertainment. If you want a cheap way of getting from A to B they were significantly cheaper than the alternatives. More legroom than Qantas. Getting through KL airport is ridiculously easy with self check in and passport scanners.

I would use them again. They are not Singapore airlines but if you want Singapore airlines service then pay Singapore Airlines prices.

  • +3

Batik over AirAsia and Jetstar anytime from seat comfort & legroom perspective.

  • I took a morning flight to DPS connecting to KUL. They sent 5-6 emails alerting flight time changes for both legs including multiple emails on the day before departure next morning - email at 12:17am saying flight changed to 8:50, then another email at 8:35pm saying flight time has changed to 7:30am, and finally one at 10:12pm saying departure time is now 8:20am.

Then on the KUL leg we sat on the tarmac for ages until we were told there's damage to a landing wheel. Clearly confusion among cabin crew some telling us to disembark, and others telling us to get back to our seats. But I'm thankful they still got the flight out after repairs etc.

The flight itself was ok, crew were friendly and did a pretty decent job, but as someone else pointed out the plane was pretty messy/ dirty/ some inconsiderate passengers, and none of the toilets I used had hand soap and had duct tape holding parts together.

    • -2

i wouldn't trust anything run by indonesia lol

  • +1

Batik is pretty rough, step below Jetstar but for a short flight not the worst. Going there is infinitely easier then coming back because the early morning flight is fine but coming back when you would like to sleep can be very hard on the body.

Personsally I found Garuda is probably worth it if you plan to take check in luggage. It's much roomier then basically any airline that flies to Bali even Qantas.

    • +1

+1 for Garuda, absolutely streets ahead of other options going to Bali and well worth the cost.

  • I've flown Batik air twice, once to KL and another to Bali and both times were ok for me. Staff were friendly and the plane was comfortable enough for what you pay.

  • +1

recently flew with batik, was as expected for the price. Flight delays both ways unfortunately but staff on board were nice, you gotta buy everything etc etc but found it less squashy than jetstar and air asia.

  • +1

recently flew with batik. It was alright compared to other options, which at that time were 3x the price.

  • +1

Flew Batik a couple years back to KL via Bali, was certainly the most uncomfortable flight I’ve ever had. The plane felt hot and sweaty, it was so loud, the seats were super uncomfortable and the overpriced food was pretty bad.

Obviously this is a very budget airline so the expected discomfort might be worth the savings for some. I personally wouldn’t go again unless it was a short flight

  • +2

It’s been 5 years, and Batik has yet to refund the cancelled flight due to COVID, despite countless emails and calls. I'd personally never fly with them again in this life time

  • +3

Interesting accounts of bad experiences with Batik air.

I've flown Perth>KL return countless times since they started on this route back in around 2010ish (as Malindo as a hybrid LCC), latest a few weeks ago and have never had a problem with delays or poor service. Their seat pitch on 737's are 32 inch which is actually better than Malaysia airlines 737's on the same route, onboard service is no different but of course, the food is.

Amazingly, I sent my daughter to KL in Dec as an unaccompanied minor and she was upgraded to business too.

  • +1

Flown Malindo/Batik at least 10 flights, and never had a problem with them, other than only accepting cash on one flight, when I didn't have any.

  • I'm flying from Brisbane in 10.days. good deal

  • +1

Really uncomfortable but the only direct flight from Bris to KL. Bring back the good old days when we had cheap fares ex bris and gc 😭

Why did all the airlines leave? 😭
