I got one 3 years ago from optus deal for $150. Mixed feelings about it.

Pros : got a sim card slot so you can use it as big phone or gps navigation ; big screen for reading books or movies ; constant android updates; good battery.

Cons : it's a cheap and slow device, sometimes takes long time to boot; Samsung's Android version is slow due to heavy branding.

    • +4

I have the same device (not from optus..) bit slow, good thing is regular SW updates,, it serves as a wireless display for my security camera system (permanently on the wall), unless you have specific requirements, I would pay a little more for never model..

      • +2

I wonder if we can root it and flash a faster os

        • +2

          XDA Forums says yes: https://xdaforums.com/t/samsung-galaxy-tab-a8-2021-sm-x200-s…
          YMMV
Do this at your own risk, etc etc

          • @DeepwaterNewt: Does second screen function still work with a custom os for this tablet? I use that functionality.

            • @MagicTsukai: Haven't a clue to be honest. The link explains what functionality works, and it seems like "all".
Also, it's an Android tablet, you can always just flash the stock Samsung OS back if you're not happy with Lineage OS.
Best to do so before loading it up with important data though :-D

@StalkingIbis: Don't spread misinformation when you clearly have no knowledge in this field. I've been an XDA dev for 8 years and I can guarantee flashing a ROM is not going to get you a "virus".

Just because you've run into something you haven't had experience with doesn't give you the reason to spread false information.

I've worked with devs for all the popular custom ROMs, Lineage, Superman ROM and Pixel Experience, and honestly we could do with a little more community support right now as phones/tablets are getting so quick, people aren't needing to root them anymore.

However, I've used a Tab A8 and they're incredibly slow even for basic tasks. A lighter ROM would greatly help here.

Hope you come around eventually as custom ROMs are truly a thing of beauty, and back in the early Android days were one of the main advantages to Android over iOS.

            • @Zackeroo: Does second screen function still work with a custom os for this tablet? I use that functionality.

              • @MagicTsukai: Officially the Tab A8 shouldn't have HDMI in the first place. I haven't used the A8 much though, only briefly, so if you're managing to get a video out working I can't guarantee that it will work on a custom OS too.

Only option I'd recommend is asking on the community forums for whichever ROM you pick whether anyone has tried it before.

            • -1

@Zackeroo: can you recommend a rom for an old lenovo m10 tab?

          • -1

@StalkingIbis: **I was trying to make a subtle std joke.

    • +2

also the screen is not good, it has a cool blue tint to it

      • Perfect! Just what I wanted to know. Ta

    • Same… I wouldn't be buying one is 2025, they are really pretty trash. Super laggy and just a very average user experience.

Pros are Samsung are still updating it now which is more than can be said for most of the "one and done" cheap China tablets… It would be ok if you just wanted to watch media on it I guess, possibly still better options though.

  • +7

Why would you buy such an old tablet

    • +5

      Nostalgia.

      • +1

        Because we can…..

        • +4

… and anyway, you're not even our real dad!!

      • Because it is now a vintage tablet

    • +6

Because not everyone knows it's an old tablet. People might think it's just a last-gen budget version of the S line tablets, rather than a 2022 model that's way more budget than just budget.

      • +1

Would be good if they branded them by year like with their phones.

      • Catch and Kogan are great at catching less sophisticated buyers out with things like this

  • +1

I got this for my mother in law years ago. Does the job but not exactly a good tablet for the typical ozbargainer

    • +8

Appropriate for most mother in laws

  • It's okay for kids, but the screen is terrible. Has a blue tinge.

    • A9+ was terrible screen too. I sold it because it was making me feel sad.

      • Does A9+ have the blue tinge? I am okay with shit quality but the saturation of blue is annoying

  • Ewww, 4GB RAM

    • +3

      Latest iPad has 4GB ram

      • So does the Nintendo Switch.

Not sure where we're heading here, none of these items are Android tablets 🤷🏼‍♂️

      • +3

        That's comparing apples and robots.

        • +4

          apples and androids

          • @r0xz: my mum has a driving licence but I'm not hopping in a car with her

      • Raspberrypi 3 has 4gb ram

      • Nahh the new 11th gen will come with 6 GB of ram now.

    • +1

At least they don't market it as 6GB* (4GB + 2GB Virtual). That annoys the crap out of me with their deceptive marketing.

  • +1

Very slow don’t bother not worth for $200

  • +5

Guys, save yourself the frustration and get an A9+ and likely the 128gb

    Really zippy and great size

    • +1

A9+ is fine, but screen was a bit boring colour-wise. But you can pick them up for 250 on sale and it stomps on the a8

      • Especially if it goes on sale for like 198

      • I get what you mean when comparing the colour space to a top tier phone but for kids and even adults it's a zippy powerful/capable study and mobile gaming device

  • A series tabs are cut back massively, so it would be hard to ever recommend an older version like this one. Better when they are first released on sale. I’d expect this would be on its last legs in terms of support and performance I bet wouldn’t be that great. There’s the new A series tabs coming out soon, so that probably will see the better A9+ get discounted to clear.

  • I have it, I use it as a second screen.

    • How do you configure that?

      • An app called SuperDisplay on Android and Windows, connected with USB C or Wi-Fi.

        • There's a better way using the inbuilt second screen feature hidden in the settings if you are on the updated Samsung os

          • @MagicTsukai: I don't believe it works on their budget Tab devices.

  • T618 is a joke.

  • Got it few years back with Optus offer. Changed the screen twice now. Just 2 days ago replaced the screen after it being left unused for 1 & half and found out the wifi & Bluetooth is not turning on.

Anyone know if USB wifi dongle can fix the internet connectivity?
