$549 if you don't need the extra wifi bandwidth and only the ports. Dual 10Gbps still, 4x 2.5, 4x 1gbps

      Doesn't have the ultra-fast 6Ghz band.

That's like selling a car branded Ferrari but it has a Toyota Corolla engine.

      • You don't have a WiFi card that supports that.

Don't bother @ing me because they literally don't exist.

        • +1

Wow. You mean this $67 WiFI card does not exist?

          https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0CP1FQV3G/?coliid=I24K37PTU24N…

          • @Caring: Read the specs, 5.8Gbps

You’d need 5-10 of these to utilise the full bandwidh assuming they’re all maxed out…

BE200 is the best available currently but only supports 5.8Gbps. If you need like 50 computers with BE200s on your wifi maybe it’s worth it…

            • +1

              @Dyl: You sound very confused.

We were talking about 6Ghz band, and your reply was that no card supports it. Well here is a cheap, cheerful and available one that clearly does.

We can talk about max throughput (Gbps) separately - but that is a different matter. Stay on point for the 6Ghz band support.

            • @Dyl: What about this one? Is head out of the sand yet?

              https://524wifi.net/product/qcn6274-524-wifi7-driver-9274-6g…

              • @Caring: Same speed

Hey, you buy your $1100 router if you want! You won’t see the speeds advertised though, you’ll get gigabit speeds on a 5.8Gbps card maximum.

                • @Dyl: Did you read the spec? Wifi7 4×4 MU-MIMO. 11Gbe max throughout.

Are you just making up numbers now without any basis? You didn't even know 6Ghz band clients existed earlier today.

You could have (literally) done a 5-second Google search to find out the real world speed of the BE200: https://youtu.be/DzV5yavnq60?si=PPNb6v4UXbCZMO0i.

I am looking for a decent Wifi7 AP to upgrade my 10Gbe home network. But not found one yet.

the profit margins must be insane on these.

  • Waiting for the updated model where it makes a full transition to sea urchin design.

  • +3

    No RGB. Literally unplayable.

  • Looks like a dead roach to me at the first glimpse

  • best router for 1 or max 2 users at once?

  • This router looks ugly af. Not to mention the stupid “game” brand and $1000 price tag.

  • ozbargainers would spend $1000+ on a router?????

    • Take it overseas - gain GST
      Tax deduct
      Sell and make some profit
Rinse and repeat until it’s free

    I better get a BJ for $1K

  • This is ridiculous. Just get a unifi Wifi 7 AP and a UDM. literally still cheaper

    • With UDM, you still need to get SPF+ modules to get 10Gbps LAN going and you don't get enough 2.5Gbps LAN ports. Also, the router has quad band WiFi 7 (it has 2 x 5GHz, guessing it is letting one of them being used for mesh setup if required) and they are 4x4 setup.

Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Router 7 and UniFi Cloud Gateway Fiber announced, but the pricing here so far is not good (retailers here want to take a cut I guess) and UniFi Dream Router 7 is 2x2. So for the UniFi route, to get sort of equivalent WiFi, you need to go for UniFi E7 or better.

Another thing is USB ports on Asus routers. You can connect a storage device to the USB 3 port.

      • I really question what need people have for 2.5Gbps+ for LAN, I can't think of any home use cases even for someone in IT.

        • Video editing with all the footages stored in NAS

          • @ahdoor: Yeah not a bad point, be interested to see if network throughput was a limiting factor here though. Obviously transferring files itself would be faster but often you can be CPU bound for other video editing tasks so it may not come into play.

        • I have 2 DIY NAS (may 80TB or so) connected with 2.5GbE to my workstation. 2.5GbE is the sweet spot to max out the SATA hard disks (max speed is around 250 - 290 MBps). You can get 2.5GbE PCIe cards for less than $20 and 8 port switch for around $70 from AliExpress. I do deep learning and related work with large files, these speeds make NAS drives as similar to directly connected.

        • The main reason is WiFi 6 (with 160 MHz channels) is already pushing above 1Gbps so the LAN (and WAN) need to support more than that. So WiFi 7 mainstream routers need at least 2.5Gbps LAN support (with flagship 4x4 needing 10Gbps).

Another reason is to do with PCIe payload byte size. With 1Gbps LAN cards, you could end up with ones which impacts 4K video capture. 2.5Gbps LAN cards / chipsets don't have this issue. It is also slightly better for SSD performance (if your 1Gbps LAN chipset uses smaller payload byte size). Also, it utilises the x1 bandwidth better (if you have to wire a PCIe x1 slot to LAN, might as well get the most of it).

With 2Gbps NBN coming, routers supporting 2.5Gbps will be needed.

          • @netsurfer: WiFi 5/802.1ac is already over 1Gbps, marginally but can still fully utilize a 1Gbps.

I guess what is the target audience for this apache helicopter gamer router, because the home professional is better off using something else and gaming wise it's just better to go ethernet at latency is paramount.

Also good that the available speeds through NBN are increasing but again outside the home professional transferring a lot of files offsite there's not a lot of benefit for 98% of households even going above 100Mbps, let alone 1Gbps to 2Gbps.
Just kind of wish we had that next leap in entertainment that 20Mbps+ afforded us with 4K streaming where the extra speed is actually being utilized in realtime.
It's really only going to reduce the time on some updates for phones and computers, and the occasional game download that does any heavy lifting.

  • Man, back in in 2015, I was thinking tech will be so much cheaper and better in 2025………..2025 came and I got a slap and AI advising me to go get a 2nd job.

Currently flagship class WiFi 7 4x4 routers cost a lot at the moment (because of 10Gbps support).

There are now dirt cheap WiFi 6 2x2 routers. Mercusys MR47BE (WiFi 7 2x2), when discounted, generally cost less than $200. But that only supports up to 2.5Gbps LAN.

However, WiFi 7 needs time to iron out some issues. MLO generally isn't working smoothly yet.

      • MR47BE is great for the price. I have 2 of them in EasyMesh for backhaul and got for around $180 each from Amazon deals. I upgraded from WAX206 - WAX202 backhaul running OpenWRT, and MR47BE is super stable although some have experienced issues.

        • Have you tried WiFi 7 with it? If yes, which WiFi 7 client(s) you tried so far? Also, did you upgrade the firmware of that router and is MLO working for you?

          • @netsurfer: Wouldn't the second MR47BE be a WiFi7 client? 1st one is connected to HFC NTD and 2nd one is connected to my 2.5GbE switch.

I have a WiFi7 PCIe card (GC-WIFI7 QCNCM865) on my NAS but didn't have time to test it. No drivers for Win10, and I have to boot Linux to try. My phone only supports 6E. I have upgraded both MR47BE to the latest firmware and MLO enabled.

            • @bazingaa: Read some people have some issues with Intel WiFi 7 card. Mine is still sealed. I have an Intel WiFi 7 card (yet to install it). Most of my devices are still only WiFi 6. That router is cheaper than my Asus WiFi 6 router.

              • @netsurfer: I have an Intel AX211 onboard Z690, it is so bad with any router, can't even see 6 GHz on Win10, even with 5 GHz, speeds are so bad. So, it could be a Intel card issue not router issue anyway. I actually got QCNCM865 to make a WiFi 7 AP back then, before these cheap routers appeared, but couldn't find a linux driver/firmware to make it an AP in 6 GHz band.

  • Crazy expensive for a home router

  • this or used RTX3090 + change for KFC?

    • +1

      I don't care!

  • how much does an ethernet cable cost again?

    • -1

Length? CAT6 okay or you want CAT6a? If you don't care about colour: $2 for 1m

However, they've been some special deals from Amazon if you are after 10 or more. 10x CAT6a 2m cables - $13.14 back in 23/11/2024. I am not able to verify they are truly CAT6a cables though (not long enough for me to test using 10Gbps ethernet - need 55m+).
