Seems to add a huge amount of bulk and be pretty redundant if you already have a viewfinder (like with the example Canon).

  Such products are generally meant to be used for video, where the optical viewfinder isn't usable because the mirror is flipped up.

    Exactly, also, if you've ever tried hitting critical focus while filming at F2.8 in the sun, its impossible without a viewfinder like this.

I am just wondering I got positive feedback in comments but no voting.
