      • Well, the product can be had for free now, can be in the future & has been in the past.

        The description fits IMO.

The deal is for usually non-free DLC within the Youversion Application. Not the free Youversion application.

How is this a bargain? As other people have said most religious books are free.

Btw is it me or do the mods on these site appear to favour a certain religion? A bit bias I think.

    • It's true, we are recruiting for the church of Jedi.

But seriously, feel free to scroll up a page and your answers will be there.

    • How is this a bargain? As other people have said most religious books are free.

No. It's not the case. While the manuscripts and copies of those are freely available, most of us aren't fluent in ancient Greek or Hebrews. Translations of the original text, however, are not always free. For example older translations like KJV 1611 or ASB are considered public domain as their copyright expired. Some newer versions of the translations — for example New International Version here, a dynamic translation published by Zondervan — are not free.

And NIV happens to be popular in many churches and Christian organisations, as it's quite easy to read (7th grade level I think). Which is why this deal has been popular.

While I started reading the Bible using NIV, I did not vote +1 on this deal because:

      • I no longer use NIV so it's not that useful to me.
      • YouVersion on Android is just way too bloated and I refuse to use it any more.

Well. I am not hiding the fact that I am a Christian and Bible on a phone is useful for reference (they aren't that good for reading or studying on small devices). However we do encourage people to vote on the deal itself without getting into religious arguments. "Most religious books are free" however, aren't exactly a good reason as I've previously explained. However you have your right to express your opinion.

i totally agree with you on this, and upvoted you…

while im definitely a militant atheist nonconformist pastafarian……. i have to admit the mods, while being a little uneducated (fyi neil, asalaam alaikum is simply a greeting, somewhat like "aloha" of native Hawaiians) they have been for the most part extremely fair about this…….

That explains a lot. All this time I thought my Middle Eastern relatives were cursing at me in Arabic. Thanks for the FYI.

        Maholo

        • (fyi neil, asalaam alaikum is simply a greeting, somewhat like "aloha" of native Hawaiians)

that was in relation to the link you posted near the top about being fair about the quran, you removed the greeting at the beginning of the original post. but its all good.

      • "Assalamu alaikum" is not just a greeting like 'Aloha', it means 'may (god‘s) peace be upon you.'

Best stick to commenting on pastafarianism.

I still think the Quran thread was a troll. You don't actually greet non Muslims with salaam if you are Muslim. the same guy recently linked dominos pizza deals too which I find a bit odd.

        • "Assalamu alaikum" is not just a greeting like 'Aloha', it means 'may (god‘s) peace be upon you.'

seems maybe you dont actually understand either (aloha or asalaam alaikum)?

edit: actually that sounded a bit trolly, let me try and explain my understanding of it from my point of view….. if a person sneezes and a religious person says "bless you" what they really are saying is "let god bless you" but if someone sneezes and i say "bless you" its not really about god is it? its about a social norm? so while a religious arab may say "peace be upon you" he may mean it to be about Allah's peace, but if a non religious says it its not about Allah (or god, or whoever)

          1. Not all Arabs are Muslim.
          2. There are more Asian Muslims than Arab ones.
          3. This greeting is only used by Muslims.
          4. You couldn't even transliterate it correctly.

You are way out of your depth on this one.

Scotty (The owner of OzBargain) Is Christan and this website is his business - He uses it to generate revenue.

It would be in his interest to employ mods with similar beliefs and not 'rock the boat'.

        • Firstly, moderators are volunteers who dedicate their time here. If you are implying the moderators are chosen because they are Christian or some other religion, that is untrue (Hint: I'm not Christian.). You are right about not rocking the boat, such as in the face of trolls, we manage to stay calm (mostly).

  • This is my point of view. Let's say, there are two similar products, one generic Chinese android tablet and the other Samsung galaxy Tab/Note 2.
Let's say the generic Chinese tablet is always free. It's definitely a deal. Correct?
Now, when the Samsung galaxy note2 tablets become free for a limited time. That's also definitely a deal, not matter that you can find other competitor products are always free.

So, many of us like youversion app rather than other bible apps, we find that this app offer better features compared to others. Unfortunately, the NIV bible was not free for youversion app. And now becomes free for a limited time. Is it wrong that we think this is definitely a deal, and hence up vote this, despite there are other products that always free?
