Switching from plastic to glass mat was one of the best buys in my life!
Highly recommended for those who are annoyed about crappy office plastic mat protectors that constantly crack on their carpets.

Herman Miller Aeron chair + glass mat = zen

Like a lot of folks I was like "NO WAY" I am putting glass under my chair, but after having this for awhile, I can safely say this will be the last time I buy a chair mat. I've dropped all sorts of heavy objects on it and its never cracked. One of my other incorrect assumptions was that it was going to be be heavy asf. Nope, it was actually very easy to carry.

I even considered getting pool glass from Bunnings, but when I saw it in person, it was about three times heavier than these glass mats.
I've now ditched all my plastic carpet protectors at home and in the office for this one.

Overall 10/10 buy and I don't say that lightly.

    • just buy a carpet tile from bunnings to put on top.

  • I'll vouch against crappy cheap plastic mats off places like Amazon, they break within a year of use but at the same time I can vouch for plastic mats from Desky (not affiliated) for anyone not convinced with glass. About the same price as this glass mat, high quality, arrive flat so you don't have to deal with unfolding nonsense and have a 5-year warranty.

    • I'm kinda shocked to hear this as I found their drafting chair to be the single worse piece of furniture I've ever purchased. Its just super imbalanced and the quality appears cheap given the price.. Have avoided their other products..

  • I have been using a 1m X 1m 10mm black gym tile from Bunnings on medium pile carpet. all the other plastic Matt's would break or if they had hooks as backing, pull out threads of my loop carpet. I guess this item is pretty good, or I suggest gym Matt is on a budget. Not the cheap foam, but rather the black heavy duty rubber used for gym weight/racks.

    • I had tried that before I bought glass, but I had two issues. First, it was annoying and hard to move the chair because gym mats are softer than hard plastic. Other reason was the gym mats would slide and move over time and you would eventually end up having a few chair legs sitting on carpet and a few sitting on the mat. With plastic mat, it was easy to slide the legs back onto the mat because it's thickness was only a few MM, whereas with a gym mat it was a huge effort since it's about 1-1.5cm thick. Third, it's not a big deal but the plastic smell took a few weeks to go away. With glass, it has all the good characteristics of hard plastic, with the added benefit of being much tougher.

  • There's also a more expensive one on Amazon that's not on sale if you want a larger one (110 x 139 for 160).

Do I need bumpers with these? Won't the chair roll off the edge a bit?

  • It's glass and its thin right? So how can it not crack when you sit on it every day if you work from home?

    Time will tell

    • There's normal float glass (like used for windows) and tempered glass (used for commercial glass doors, pool fences, this chair mat, etc) which is lot stronger.

A chair will be no problem, but pointy hard objects can definitely shatter them. It's a good chair mat for an office but probably not a workbench, although that's where I'm using mine.

      • Yeah even for a chair mat you do have rollers under your office chair with average 80+ kgs everyday average man sitting with the weight of the chair. So I don't see why it won't crack eventually

For me officeworks plastic mat is fine they last 3-4 years despite costing $40 or so.

Shattered glass is an OH&S issue and work might not cover you for that

At this point you might get a steel panel instead of this…

Unless this thing is flexible and if it is it won't hold much strength

80kg over 5 wheels is just 16kg per wheel, really not much at all.

I think you're underestimating how tough tempered glass is.

Just don't drop sharp heavy pointed tools onto it. :)

You shouldn't have to buy your own chair mat at work, they should buy it for you. If it's for WFH then people really should be responsible over their own homes or they'll just ruin it for everyone else.

          • @eug: Nah not every company does that. It's like asking for funds setting up your work equipment at home. Most work are hybrid now not true WFH. Worst case you claim it back in tax but you never get full amount back

Are you talking about getting chair mats at the office? IMHO a chair mat is a nice thing to have for typical low-pile commercial carpets, but not really crucial. In that situation it's more to reduce wear on the carpet so if the office doesn't want to buy one they'll just absorb the wear on the carpet.

You can probably thank people like that lady above. :)

  • I just used few laminate floorboards planks joined up together. Works like a charm. Got it for free from Facebook marketplace

  • Bought it! Thanks OP.

  • Had an expensive polycarbonate matt from a place in Melbourne. (Over $200)
Allegedly with life span of 10 years plus.
Cracked within 12 months. Has those spikes and was the correct thickness for my carpet.
After attempting for 2 years to obtain some sort of refund, the store folded without any compensation to me.

Have had a piece of carpet on top of the cracked polycarbonate, but its not satisfactory.
Happy to try a set of roller blade wheels as per suggestions.

    Question:
Do the roller blade wheels leave tracks/indentations in normal house type pile carpet and hence ruin it?

  • Urgh, mine arrived with a dent/chip in the side.

    • Contact them, they'll probably replace it.
