Thanks op, you almost got me for April fools…Freeze them over winter and throw them at people? 😅

  • +22

PLEASE stop buying baloons! They are the worst pollutant

      Self-Sealing Water Balloons are great

      edit: This

      • These also hurt a lot more when thrown. So win win?

    • +5

I had heard that they are an environmental nightmare. Surprised that aren't banned yet.

    • -5

OH WON'T SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN

      • +8

I bet you think it's "woke" or something to try and look after the environment

        • its literally a simpsons meme

          • +2

            @redfox1200: used wrongly

            • @FelixNZ: not really, someone is thinking of the childrens futures getting rid of these balloons

              • +1

@redfox1200: It's funny when its used in a way that's a non sequiturial appeal to emotion. Not an actual massive social problem (not that I'm suggesting that water balloons are as big of a problem as say, industrial micropastic pollution or continued reduction in boidiversity from increased agri/forestry and so on, but it's the principle)

                • @FelixNZ: Let Redfox have this little dream. Probably been waiting all week to use the gag, which in this context I agree doesn't work.

A while ago I told a bunch of kayaking teenagers that they shouldn't be chucking water balloons around at each other in the river as it could harm wildlife when they mistook a balloon for food. In the middle of their dismissive "yeah yeah, whatever old man" type response a fish grabbed at a burst balloon on the surface right in front of one of them. They instantly changed attitude and scoured that bit of river for the balloons they'd thrown and any other bit of rubbish they could see.

Sometimes it's just people knowing the reality that's enough to get them to do the right thing.

You forgot the part of the story where Tom Cruise high fived you!

        • +2

If you think saying "guys, don't chuck water balloons around, it's not good for the wildlife as they try to eat it." is worthy of an action film, you must lead a tediously uneventful life.

@banana365: Getting a bit high on those upvotes, huh?

The joke was your story sounds incredibly fake.

            • @magic8ballgag: Yeah, that's kind of weird on your part. I've never really understood people who seem to get off on claiming that something fairly mundane and only vaguely interesting is false by saying something like "and everyone clapped". How monotonous a life they must lead that anything slightly out of the ordinary must be fictional.

      They are the worst pollutant

      Are you sure?

        Agreed, they are.

Bunch O Balloons stems and caps are now made from certified and traceable, recycled plastic

These are recyclable and not flying balloons which should be fine if we can sort the after-party rubbish. Some are made from latex decomposed in a year if lucky they don't kill animals that eat them (from a quick google).

Terrible! Get the reusable balloons from AliExpress. Excellent and no rubbish after to pick up

    • +2

      This!

After picking about about 500 pieces of used water ballons from hedges, grass, driveways, etc, I ended up throwing what we had left away. Its not that we had 500 ballons, its just the ballon seperates into a few pices on impact.

The reusable ones are better, we got the magnetic ones and the ones with the flap. They both work ok and the kids don't seem to mind. Also filling up the reusable ones in a bucket submerging the reusable ball is easier with less water wastage.

    • +2

can you share the link please?

      • Interested also.

      • I ordered these, a six pack. https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005007257760101.html

We also got some basic ones from Aldi, or was it TEMU, no idea, but they had a flap opening and were not magnetic. They worked pretty much the same and the kids didn't really care less, as long as the other person got soaked.

Extra points is that kids of all ages could refill them just by dunking them in a bucket, closing the flap or hemispheres and chuckin em!.

        • $2 per reusable balloon vs these $1 gets 60 balloons

          • @bcYield: Which is why I only got 6. The non magnetic ones are cheaper.

The time taken to pickup 6 balls sure beats picking up little pieces of water balloon like an emu for an hour.

Not sure how much you value your time but I definitely value my time at more then $12/hr :-)

            • @mrhugo: Kids also need to pick up and refill water each throw. The good is good for exercise and no mess after. The bad can't do simultaneous throws unless getting more. I'd say this deal is more for a one-off, low-cost, once for a while party rather than a more sustainable long-term investment.

    arent there biodegradable ones?

    • +2

Even if they are biodegradable, they'll be in a robust enough state to choke wildlife for months.

  • This item is click and collect only
Delivery not available for this item
[OnePass] This item is eligible for free delivery

A bit confusing there at first. Is OnePass team having access to extra stock/warehouse for them to save for OnePass members? Just wondering.

  • +3

Please don't buy these, as others have said they are terrible for the environment.

I'm not sure why people are giving negs to this because they don't like the product. I would only give something a neg if it was a bad deal.

My kids use them in the back yard and I put them in the bin after. They don't go anywhere near any wildlife, except maybe seagulls at the tip. They would represent a minuscule component of my total contribution to landfill.

  • Another option is to make origami "balloons" from paper. The kids spend maybe 20 minutes making the "balloons", then ten minutes throwing them at each other.

Instructions here, they're about the simplest origami things you can make, unless you consider paper planes to be origami:
    https://origami.guide/origami-toys/origami-water-bomb-balloo…

If you use plain (photocopier/printer) paper, should be 100% biodegradable, just add them to your compost heap and cover them so they won't blow away.
