The Duskbloods on Switch 2 I can't wait, I really hope its a spiritual successor to Bloodborne because I love that game so much.

Honestly can't wait to finally get to play Windwaker and Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness. I might actually get Switch Online now.

Hardware seems better then I expected, but guessing they know about the Steamdecks / ROG Ally they knew they had to be a bit more capable.

  • +26

    Was quite disappointed, personally.

Most of the direct was made up of games that have already released.

The heavy emphasis on the mouse controls in a handful of games like ‘Drag x Drive’ and ‘Mario Party Jamboree’ was weird. Do Nintendo expect that people are going to be playing with a table in front of them?

All the enhanced versions for Switch 2 are paid upgrades, which is pretty dissapointing. Not to mention the tech demo / virtual owners guide “Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour” (you’ve left this out of your summary OP) which looked interesting until they mention it’s a “Paid Digital Title”. Are they serious?

And top that off with an absence of 1st party Nintendo titles. Sure, Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza look cool, but I was hoping for a bit more on the 1st party front.

The Duskbloods looks good though - excited about that one. I thought it was Bloodborne 2 there for a moment. Also definitely wasn’t expecting to see anything about IO Interactive’s James Bond title - haven’t heard anything about it since they announced it 2020.

    Overall, quite a shame imo.

    • +4

I think the whole paid upgrade is a shame but some games are getting more content exclusively on the NS2 so I think it's definitely worth it for that.

      • +4

Just depends on how much the upgrade costs.

      • +3

The "extra content" in the "upgrades" should be given for free as it wouldn't lose them money, it would actually get more people (who already own the games) to jump on Switch 2 (me probably included). But it's Nintendo, they want money even for the interactive manual that should come for free and pre-loaded on the system.

How things are looking now, I'm not paying $699 to play Mario, Donkey Kong and old Zelda games that will finally not be stuttering. More or less everything else they showed/announced is/will be available on other consoles/PC, looking better and running faster.

    • +4

Not to mention the tech demo / virtual owners guide “Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour” (you’ve left this out of your summary OP)

Thanks, didn't realise it was going to be a seperate paid game…

      • +7

Can’t blame you. It really doesn’t look like it should be a paid title.

    • It's fair enough if there wasn't much compelling stuff for yourself, though overall I would consider the announcement a big success.

Nintendo always needs a gimmick - at least you can choose to not purchase the camera and probably ignore the mouse feature in 95% of games.

I agree that the Welcome Tour should have been a free pack-in game; I'll reserve judgement on the Switch 2 Edition games until I know the upgrade price. If something like an extra $20, it's probably fine.

Some Switch games will be updated for free:
      https://www.nintendo.com/us/gaming-systems/switch-2/transfer…

Ultimately, the Switch 2 will appeal most to fans who have been begging for an updated console for years. Just having far better hardware with better third-party support, 1080p handheld and 4K docked is pretty significant.

Parents will likely continue purchasing the more budget friendly OG Switch for a few years to come.

      • The NS2 Welcome Tour on Japanese eShop is ¥990 tax incl. So likely will be at AU$9.99 when released here.

        • They should include it in the NSO Expansion Pack for free, can’t see many people buying it.

  • -1

    What a great Direct!

I was hoping to see a 3D Mario but it seems they are saving that for another time.

The Mk world and DK Bananza games looks epic!

Vooks.net states the S2 will be $699 in Aus

Nintendo Switch 2 to release on June 5, costs $699 in Australia

And that some of the game upgrades will be ‘free’ for NSO+ expansion subscribers

Worry not though as instead of having to purchase the games again all that’s needed is an upgrade purchase. There’s no word yet on how much these upgrades will cost, but some upgrades – like those for the Zelda games – will be offered at no additional cost to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members.

    • Thanks, updated post with pricing.

    • $10 hopeful, but $20 MAXIMUM. Anything more, and I’m not buying the upgrade.

  • +1

Imo this is wayyyy better than the switch 1 but I'm scared about the price. If it really is $700 that is going to drive many people away. I'm tempted to buy day one but there might be an early sale. Also I'm not sure if I would open my one because I would love to put cfw on it.

    • I am considering either not buying one and waiting for a lower price, or buying one on launch day and leaving it in the box while waiting for CFW.
But if I put CFW on it, I won’t be able to use Zelda Notes to tank the economy.
I have no idea what to pick.
I’ll probably wait for news of a CFW hack and then buy one before a new hardware revision is released.

      • +2

Thanks. Might wait for EB Games as they only take a deposit instead of the full amount upfront.

JB would be cheaper if you have gift cards though.

      • +6

Yikes games are expensive - hopefully placeholder prices…

        • Donkey Kong - $104
        • Mario Kart World - $114
        • -2

          Inflation, am I right?
Seriously, it’s long been coming for Nintendo to keep in line with the rest of the industry’s price hikes for the long term.
Still upsetting that games are becoming more expensive over time, but that’s what happens with a hegemon that despises everyone else.

          • +5

            @FujinShu:

Nintendo to keep in line with the rest of the industry’s price hikes

You must be talking about the maximum prices (full release price).

But it's 2025, fewer and fewer people ever pay those. Most games are purchased at 50% or 80% off sales or played on gamepass.

Nintendo doesn't have those on it's first-party titles.

If anything, the real price of games have gotten way cheaper in recent years, and Nintendo is the only one never discounting them to a sensible price.

If you bought each console today and played it's top ten games, the Switch would be the most expensive by hundreds of dollars, even though the console hardware is cheapest (and it's a gen behind).

        • +1

Getting hard to justify for me… The hardware has crept closer to handheld PC pricing, while the games are now pricier than most PC AAA titles.
Except with PC nobody ever pays full price for anything, multiplayer is free, and you can run emulators or collect linux ISOs as you wish.

Seems like exclusives are Nintendo's only USP now? Quite a difference from the first Switch.

Was waiting on this announcement to pull the trigger, but for my purposes this pricing makes me want to wait for the lenovo steamOS device pricing to be confirmed, and also to see what its release does to the old ROG Ally and Steam Deck prices…

    • +1

EB Games Pre-order are up. Updated OP.

  • +3

Silksong 2025 hmm… I'll believe it when I see it.

  • +3

Those game prices…ouch. Could be a reason I don't bother with this unit until prices drop sometimes down the track. Pretty much a double in price. Seems more like the Nintendo privelage tax than real inflation. Considering many games will simply be enhanced versions of existing games.

  • +1

Can’t wait for all the $699 RRP “deal” posts to start popping up. “bEiNg AvAiLabLE iS wHaT mAkEz iT a dEaL!!!1!” All while people complain that they can’t buy 15 of them to scalp on Sharketplace and Scumtree.

    • I can't wait to neg you anti-RRP brigaders.

  • Got my pre-order locked in.

Apparently those 'Switch 2 enhanced' upgrades cost 1000 yen coming out of the Japanese sites, which is ~fair enough for me I suppose and a decent ~10 dollar price I'm willing to pay to upgrade BoTW and ToTK apiece.

New game pricing themselves is certainly making waves across socials - I wonder if the NSO Voucher program or something like it is going to continue into this generation at a slightly increased price.

  • Trade in deal for Eb games Switch + 4 games to get $200 off. But you need to be the highest tier of membership. Seems like a crap deal, but I guess eb games trade ins are always shitty value.

    • You are probably better off trading it in after purchase

  • +1

    Holy crap, $700?

That is (profanity) exxy. The whole point of Nintendo hardware is that it's generally underpowered so it's cheaper. I'd only be looking to buy this if it's $300-$400 personally.

This seems like a greedy/terrible move on their behalf, and poor value for consumers.

    • +5

Games will also be $110/$120 too.

      • This is the biggest problem. It will normalise it. $700 for the console… ehh, not that surprising.

    • +2

Yeah, it's too much. Could be justified if it was the OLED version but then you've get the $100+ exclusive games.

    • +2

Yep they are the new nvidia/apple. Isnt' that the price the ps5 was at launch? Now they want that for the switch 2? and you gotta pay to download an upgrade for your old games. Wow

      • You do get the screen and battery but agree it's too much. I got a ROG Ally for that price and can play emulated games and PC games.

    • The eight year old Switch 1 is $430 ($500 for OLED) and you honestly thought the 2 might be $300-$400!?

    • -1

The whole point of Nintendo hardware is that it's generally underpowered so it's cheaper.

We don't want them to do that anymore. We want them to make a high end device for their high end games and thankfully that's what they're delivering.

This seems like a greedy/terrible move

Greedy? Uh sure if you also call Sony greedy.
Terrible? Nah, it's a brilliant call and it'll pay off, watch the sales numbers.

      poor value consumers

The ones refusing to save up for it will miss out, but no one buying it will regret it.

  • You can buy Ultimate GC currently at 7% off - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/900145
Use it to purchase JB gift cards online, and use more than one JB gift card in one transaction.
And place the pre order on the console bundle for $715.

Its sooo expensive though still… but FOMO… and I'm hoping this doesn't get scalped like the PS5 did…
    Decisions..

    • +1

Personally I'm doubting it. I dont think it's enough to entice the mom and dads to upgrade for their kids now based on hardware and game pricing. Diehard gamers and collectors will probably buy in but won't be enough to siphon stock. Nintendo have indicated they have fairly significant stock piles ready for launch to avoid previous scalping events. Personally in two minds. Price of hardware is way up there. Games is another. Can't justify the price tag on the first party titles to be honest. Considering some are simply enhanced versions. For instance Jamboree has gone up for about $30-40. Can't see the justification myself in that price hikes. Newly developed titles maybe, but still a massive jump. The whole point behind Nintendo in my mind is that they are the mum and dad video game system and should be affordable.

      • -3

I mean it's not like Switch 1 isn't going to be enough for families. The whole reason Nintendo had to make a Switch 2 with 4k and 120 FPS is because hardcore modern gamers kept asking for it so they had to do it to keep up with modern times. Families can still play Switch 1 if they want and the modern gamers can go for the 2. There's only some Switch 2 exclusives and at the moment, none that really seem like it'd entice a family to buy right now, otherwise everything else can be played on 1. If 1 finally stops production, which probably won't happen for a few years because not all 1 games can be played on 2, I can see Nintendo making a Switch 2 dumbed down edition just for the families.

  • +1

Excited for June! And hopefully the hardware being better than expected might mean more third party releases

    • +1

Definitely will seeing the initial lineup they have.

  • +4

Wow trustworthy family friendly Nintendo just became the new apple/nvidia with those prices

  • +1

That description for GameShare seems inaccurate? I don't think it's just screen sharing - Clubhouse Games has for example card games where each player is shown their own hand.

    • +1

Thanks, I've updated to share the same game on three consoles.

  • Extremely disappointing to see third party publishers are still not putting full games on the cart.

  • So games are going to cost $120 each now. I bet GTA VI is going to be at least $130, maybe even $150.

    • Doubt it will be on the Switch 2 initially. PS5/Xbox Series X first, maybe PC and Switch 2 a year or so later.

      • I doubt it'll be on Switch 2 at all. But it will cost at least $130 for XSX/PS5.

        • GTA V Switch 2 Edition is more likely, now you mention it. I don’t think GTA VI on the Switch is out of the question, though likely further down the track and a bit of work involved.

  • sold based on mario kart world, but it better have an actual battle mode thats not an afterthought, don't have high hopes for that tho.

it's pushing it, you can easily pickup barely used ps5s for ~$500 these days, but you'd be in the same position — an upgrade running the same games slightly better with a trickle of almost no actual new games.

looks like they're holding the colour versions close to their chest… calling those things "red" and "blue" joycons is misleading…. they're grey with a basically non-visible band. surprising and a bit of a fail if they dont launch with similar switch1 colourways.

not looking forward to the ratcheting up of games to ~$100-120… one of the biggest selling points of the switch was them maintaining prices of new games to around $60-70 and lower… even if they did remain that price for the entire lifespan….

also, charging for switch2 upgrade versions is pretty naff and just an extra hassle… it should just install whatever patch is needed by default. they shouldnt be milking switch online tiers with the extra stuff too, just make it default already…

  • I thought it was an amazing announcement:

    • I thought the online screensharing even on different games was really cool to bring couch multiplayer back. Especially with the camera. Discord chat is not the same as couch multiplayer and i think this feature will close the gap if connection is stable

    • large number of 1st and 3rd party games line up for 2025. This is 2 months before console comes up and good amount of exclusives. I don't think xbox and ps5 have that level of line up at launch

    • mouse feature is a good edition to give more options to play. May not be for everyone but I'm all for out of the box thinking. I'm hoping more games that were thought to be it will only work on pc will also move to switch2

    • I don't understand the console cost sentiment in above comments. You want a hybrid console that does 4k /120 fps (obviously not both)while having a $499 switch price tag. How? Steam deck and other hybrid consoles are way more expensive and much heavier.

    • keen to see continuous amiibo support

    • +3

      It's not real 4K 120fps. That's why

      • Agreed its not real and never said it will be native. My point is, everyone wants a hybrid console that outperforms a steam deck but at nintendo battery life, weight and price.

        It's not going to happen

  • I wonder how long it will take until hacks these. That would be a reason to buy a v1 model.

    • +1

Still can't hack anything but v1 Switches without a chip. Wouldn't surprise me if Switch 2 isn't hacked before next gen. Wouldn't surprise me if it got hacked at any moment.

  • Have pre-ordered the Switch 2 and several accessories from EB Games. It's a bit on the expensive side, though trading in or privately selling my current OLED makes it more palatable.

Can see myself eventually ditching the PS5 for this as the living room console (I also have a gaming PC and a Steam Deck OLED. If this handles local 4 player Rocket League and other third-party games well, I won't have much use for the PS5).

    • Agree, this might really drop my PS5 playtime close to zero of there's good third party support.

Still expect a drop in graphics but who cares for the portability hey?

  • +1

The pricing really moves into Steam Deck territory. The value proposition seems pretty questionable in that regard. For Nintendo fans, it does look great, but things like gamecarts being "keys" now is a bit disconcerting. Sure Steam is a digital only proposition but the games are on storage on an open platform.

  • Pricing is all kinds of (profanity) once you add in a few things.

    • Console
    • Pro Controller
    • 3 x New Release Games (Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, Split Fiction)
    • 3 x Game Upgrades (Zelda x 2, Kirby)
    • NSO Subscription

    Looking at around $1150….

    • +1

Or the ps5 pro at $1199 just for the console. Seeing it a portable PS5 lite the switch 2 is priced for what it offers. Remember it running cyberpunk 2077 at 10 watts compared to steamdeck at 27 watt. Nintendo seems to have gain massive efficiency

      • +2

I highly doubt the Switch 2 is as powerful as a base PS5… But supposedly cyberpunk runs 40fps docked per an article but I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Likely lots of upscaling/AI trickery in use here.

  • +3

The "extra content" in the "upgrades" should be given for free as it wouldn't lose them money, it would actually get more people (who already own the games) to jump on Switch 2 (me probably included). But it's Nintendo, they want money even for the interactive manual that should come for free and pre-loaded on the system.

How things are looking now, I'm not paying $699 to play Mario, Donkey Kong and old Zelda games that will finally not be stuttering (extra money for that!). More or less everything else they showed/announced is/will be available on other consoles/PC, looking better and running faster.

  • I pre-ordered from JB as I had some gift cards I bought using the 4% discount from Macquarie.

I wasn't going to kid myself and I have pre-ordered the bundle. I would buy it anyway sooner or later. Not 100% happy with the price, but this is the economy we live in now a days. I remember when a bag of carrots was under 0.99c at Woolies, now it is more than 3 times of what it was. I get it, food is a primary necessity, a Switch 2 is not.

With the hopes that games prices will go down or discounted in the future (prob not happening) am holding off on games as I still have a backlog of games to go through, and a few in my backlog are in the Switch 2 compatible with improvement list. Mario Kart World (that comes in the bundle) will keep us busy for a while anyway.

  • -1
Merged from Nintendo Switch 2 Seems Overpriced

So I've seen the presale advertisements for the Switch 2 now. $699 to be one of the first to own another console with PS4 capabilities and expensive titles, that almost never go on sale, won't get me to open my wallet.

I was never convinced about the first Switch either, but in my opinion it presented greater bang for buck than this newest iteration. It's apparent I'm not 7 years old or emotionally invested in playing Nintendo titles, and don't understand other peoples drives to buy this. I have no doubt they are going to sell a crapload of them though.

What does everyone else think about this release? I'm genuinely interested. Pass at this price or begrudgingly buy? Psyched for the new Switch even?

    • +6

Every new product that comes out, people complain about it's price. Yet we all know it'll sell out continously.

I have no interest in the Switch or Switch 2 personally, but it's quite reductive to say "it's for 7-year olds". Plenty people enjoy it and the games it has to offer. Nothing wrong with that.

The Switch 2 LCD screen and no OLED is a bit of a slap in the face though. Presumably so they can double dip in 2 years time with an OLED version..

      • -4

I didn't say "it's for 7 years olds" nor make out that's the only reason people buy them. I'm happy to take criticism but keep it real please.

Yeah it does seem like a huge blow not to have an OLED screen, that would have made it far more attractive. You've probably nailed the truth of it though with the marketing strategy.

        • +2

Nah mate. You heavily implied it was for kids though.

      • Every new product that comes out, people complain about it's price. Yet we all know it'll sell out continously.

This doesn't seem to be the case, it's still available in all places so it seems like the demand right now isn't as crazy as people think it is.

    • -2

Just wait a few months until the price drops down to around $500

      • I hope to eat my words, and I think it will sell out in the US, if it does, there is no chance it will go down to $500 in a few months. As I understand we can preorder NOW in Aus, in the US pre orders start on the 9th April, there are dedicated YT channels to teach people on how to secure a SW2 before they sell out. Let's see, only time will tell.

        • +1

          This aged well…
If the tariffs stay, burgers are gonna be paying $600 USD + tip for the console itself hahaha
There will be plenty of stock available for the rest of the world.

    • Compared with steam deck LCD 256G $649, switch 2 $699 is predictable for me. Game price is another story, though.
      And, already preordered.
And yes, I wish I were 7 years old.

    • +1

Yeah, but you have to remember that it comes with a screen you'll never use, a battery you'll never use, a dock that shouldn't be necessary, and a novelty controller you'll have to replace with a proper one.

When you look at it like that, it's a bargain.

Charging for that informational / tech demo game is very strange.

Pricing isn't that crazy to me. I bought an Xbox series x at launch (5 years ago) and that was $749. This isn't as powerful, but has a screen, a battery, load of accessories, dock with a fan in it, plus inflation/rise of dictatorship..

Yeah, that's the most bizarre thing that came out of the Nintendo Direct. They kept calling it a game when I'd call it an interactive manual app. How that isn't a free pack-in, or at the very least free with a NSO subscription is beyond me. I can't imagine many people bothering to pay for it.

      • Ah good point, should definitely at least be an NSO subscription freebie.

People forget these things mate. I am with you.

Oh! Also, I bet that a lot of those complaining about the SW2 price, have dedicated gaming PCs with a $2ks graphics card. Of course, the $2ks graphics card is cool, but not the SW2.

  • Do any of the companies selling the Switch 2 have recent history of midnight launches?

    • +1

I don't think any store does midnight release anymore.

Only one with a possible chance of midnight release would be EB Games.

IF Kmart does sell it, then you might be able to visit on of the 24hrs store.

      • I don't think any store does midnight release anymore.

        Sad

  • pre-ordered the kart bundle through JB, now wait for 5th of Jun

  • Has anyone played WWE using NS? How is the experience. I want to get NS for my son to keep him active. So need games like boxing, tennis where he can keep moving. Any suggestions?

    • I don't think WWE is what you need in terms of using the joy cons for motion control for wrestling / boxing. You might need to look at games like Arms, Ring Fit, or Fitness Boxing, (even Just Dance, but this one might not be for you) but I haven't tried either of those games.

Is Amazon just bowing out of this? Not even games?

Puts a bit of a damper on Amazon Prime if I can't utilise it for its primary purpose of getting games delivered to my lazy ass.
