Hi folks, what do you put on to protect yourselves when mowing yards?
Bonus if you can specify exactly what they are. Extra bonus if you’ve a deal on said gears and share them. Inb4, inserted obligatory poll.
Thanks.

don't forget your beer
I wear thongs during bindy season.
Undies
Proper safety shoes. Turns out flying rocks, debris mix very well with toes.
A poll like this doesn't work correctly.
Undies + Thongs + a Stubby holder to protect my beer from getting warm.
What no blue vest or ripped Bintang t-shirt ?!
…Keeps some grass and dirt out of the chest hair
Headphones - might as well listen to news or a podcast.
Usually wear steel capped boots so don't need to wash feet afterwards, and don't want to wreck the runners.
I try to do it in late afternoon so don't need sun protection.
Growing up the biggest danger mowing the lawn was running over a wire coat hanger and getting it impaled in your shin. Thankfully never happened but there were some near misses.
For me this is my approach:
Always
- safety glasses
- Clothes….duh
- Runners
Sometimes
- gloves (depends how much work i have ahead for me that day)
- steel cap workbooks
Fortunately as safety glasses are cheap and not as clunky from bunnings this is an easy must have….i use them for more than just mowing, including cycling and motorcycling.
As my mower is electric i don't really have the need for ear muffs, but if mine was ICE i would also include ear muffs.
Note:
- If you are going to wear earphones i would recommend something bone conducting or NOT noise cancelling, you need to be able to hear what's going on around you or if your mower has picked up something bad (like loose rocks)
Steel capped shoes please … An absolute must. If you've worked in an ED and seen the damage of those mowing in thongs, barefoot or normal footwear then you would understand.
My Dad worked in parks amd gardens with the council. They were supplied with goggles, sunscreen, earmuffs etc plus had to wear long sleeved shirts and pants, steel capped boots and the hat plus the high viz vest. Dad would also have a piece of elasticised coth which he put around his calf and that stopped grass and rubbish going into the shoes. Hot work all day every day.
For a good 20 years I would mow the lawn in an old pair of shorts, tshirt (and jumper if its cold), boots and gloves.
Then my mum finds out and freaks out that I am not wearing protective eyewear and ear muffs, so now I have eyewear and ear muffs and its so over the top and uncomfortable.
I personally wear my safety squints, haven't had too many incidents so far…
Long Pants, Long sleeve Shirt, Brim Hat(sun protection), Ear Plugs, UV-rated safety Glasses and steel-toe boots.
With the boots, I have a pair that sit next to the lawn mower, so I slip them on. Cheapy Kmart ones.
Don’t forget a harness
and bubble wrap
Hat and steel cappers. Protective glasses if im using the line trimmer or Hedger
I'd always try to wear thongs at least. I heard tell of lawnmowers kicking up tiny pebbles that turn into deadly projectiles, but I think luck is on my side.
ALWAYS:
* ear muffs
* shoes^
* hat
* sunscreen
SOMETIMES (depending on circumstances or if I feel like it):
* mask if very seedy / windy / dusty
* gloves
* insect repellent
* sunglasses or safety glasses
* gaters if the grass is too long in rural area … brown snakes (more for the line trimmer part)
* ^steel cap boots
Enclosed shoes if I'm feeling safety conscious…
Crocs if I'm feeling lazy.
I only have a small lawn and it's mowed regularly.
Shorts, t-shirt and sunnies. Never had a problem.
safety glasses,earmuff/ear buds and sunscreen
In over 25 years of professional mowing I only lost one tooth from a stone thrown while brushcutting, I did work for someone who was suing someone because their son had lost an eye from a stone thrown by a brushcutter, also I used to replace my glasses a few times a year as they were to scratched to use
Go all battery and no need to really worry about hearing protection. Deffo need some glasses and a hat tho.
I use Airpod Pro for noise cancelling and hat
Ear muffs, googles and steel cap boots is my minimum.
Used to wear safety glasses but often copped a stone in the face, so full face mask.
Hat
Work shirt
Long pants, more for grass and dirt protection as it flies all over the place.
Noise cancelling buds or bt ear muffs for music.
For lawn mowing, thongs and stubbies are fine. Whipper snipping requires a bit more protection though!
Safety glasses and ear muff for the whipper snipper.
Just ear muff with the lawn mower, never bothered with safety glasses because I know there’s nothing on my well maintained grass.
Always long pants on.
Boots, long pants, long sleeves, hat, hearing protection.
Gum boots, work gloves (got stung by a bee cleaning out catcher), sunnies and hat. Shorts and T-shirt.
Thongs and eye protection.
I got plastic turf so no experience on mowing, when am gardening however, i wear steel cap boots / gloves and long sleeve clothing. I'd say if your gear is loud, use ear muffs and eye protection as well.
I got plastic turf
gross
if i were to redo my lawn, i'd do it again 100% kthx.
yuck
where do you hose the dog turds to?
i don’t have pets
Go full borat
If you really need to ask this question you probably shouldn't be working a lawnmower
Thongs, and a hat. Maybe some ear buds for tunes.
Shirt and shorts.
30 mins later the front and back is done.
Protect snake bite?
Tubeless tyres and sealant.
Thongs and shorts. Thats about it.
