Probably because the sort of deal that was available on release of these was a loophole that is extremely unlikely to ever happen again.

        • +1

happened again with the 9 iirc. itll happen again with the 10 too

          • @belongsinforums: Details of the loophole please? 🙏
Looked back through the deals on the site and wasn't obvious which one was the deal. Thanks!

@sandman28: Either signing up with Optus at Harvey Norman, or with Telstra at JB Hi-fi, then cancelling the contract and paying out the ETF. They usually had the best deals during the pre-order periods.

              • @TheContact: Legend. Thanks for the tip!

              • @TheContact: How much is that ETC, $400 min?

                • @duke meister: IIRC around 800 plus the first month of whatever the contract was. Very much a case of the real deal being in the comments here. The regular preorder deal is posted, while decent, the real bargain of this "hack" is in the comments.

  • Officeworks has the same phone for $887. Will they price match JB price of $837 plus 5% off? And do they do trade-in? Sorry, I'm kind of new to this. Anybody? Thanks.

    • +1

They will certainly beat it by 5%, until they match the price of JB which I would imagine happening very soon.

  • I'm still waiting for a 9A pre-order deal, is Google now out of marketing funds?

    Superb phone.

I persisted with the 6P (had it replaced once by G), then the 7P was a big improvement. After about 18 months I cracked the rear, and it started failing - took advantage of the $250 trade-in "if it turns on" to get the 8P, and it's a 4-5 year keeper.

Except it wont be because the screen will break or they will screw it up with an software update and forcing you "trade up" again… it is clearly their business model.

  • What are people's thoughts on this vs Samsung S24 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/899862

    • +4

this has better cameras. samsung arguably has better UI and better integration with other samsung products. sammy has the much better chip too, if that's important to you.

      • Thanks mate

      • sammy has the much better chip too

I have to disagree with this. The Exynos chip in the S24 has been hilariously awful. I "upgraded" from the Pixel 6 Pro, and it feels like a downgrade in almost every way.

Maybe on paper the Exynos is supposed to be a better chip, and it's possible I ended up with a lemon but in day to day use, the S24 is noticeably slower. And the camera is nowhere near the quality of the Pixel. Very underwhelming phone. Surely the P8P is more comparable to the S24 Ultra

        • He was probably talking about the Snapdragon version. Since most people here tend to consider grey imports as a purchasing option, I wouldn't blame him.

If you are going to get a Samsung, always check if you are getting a Snapdragon version, or a cheaper bogged down Exynos version. Or just avoid Samsung phones all together to avoid the BS they are putting on Australia.

I paid nearly this price when it was released.

I've always been a diehard Pixel fan starting with the original released Pixel phone, recently bought a Motorola Moto G75 128GB for $348 to act as a wifi hotspot on an upcoming trip.

    https://www.notebookcheck.net/Motorola-Moto-G75-smartphone-r…

I'm starting to wonder now why I'm paying so much for a Pixel when something like the Moto G75 is absolutely phenomenal for the price and the features it has - I'm not a gamer and don't take pictures of every meal I eat for FB/Insta, maybe that makes all the difference?

Guaranteed Android updates for 5 Android OS updates and 6 years of security updates.

IP68 water resistance, wifi-6e, dual sim (eSim)

    • grapheneos and the camera makes the difference for me

    • I've had a couple of moto phones over the years. Can't remember which models, but both of them were promised 3 Android upgrades, but we only ever got 1. The Pixels, and to some extent Samsungs, are the only ones that you can safely rely on for upgrades.

I admit Pixel hardware is a bit overpriced for what it gives you, but you're paying for the software and security. Or perceived security anyway.

      • +2

Sounds like deceptive advertising, the Motorola Australia website is definitely guaranteeing it this time at least and if they don't deliver, I'd say they will be in the shit.

        Their words:

"Keep up with the latest version of Android by getting five OS upgrades—and six years of security updates—guaranteed through 2029"

        https://www.motorola.com.au/smartphones-moto-g75-5g/p

I think it's the quality of the camera and its associated software which allows Pixel to command the higher asking price.

  • If you guys want obsidian colour, you can get it from Harvey Norman for the same price.

  • Went and got the cards from Woolies for the extra $80 Woolworths credit. Then got the Pixel with them cards. Cheers for the info!

Haven't seen the points roll in yet but not too fussed.

    • Woolies points are always instant. I did the same as you, and points were there in under a minute.
