Both flightfinder and IWTF show rather cheap fairs from Gotogate and associated companies.

Various online forums indicate they are a nightmare to deal with even the slightest thing that can go wrong. Would be mindful trying to book the "cheapest" fare.

@flightfinderau, thoughts on Gotogate and the like please?

    • With all OTAs, for standard bookings they are fine. It gets complicated and messy should you want to chase for refunds or change in dates etc.

See if you can book with BYOJet, Aunt Betty or studentflights etc for the same or similar prices. All owned by flight centre. That might give you some peace of mind.

        • I tend to find GTG and their affiliates much cheaper. The too good to be true type. For example tickets into Asia is $6k direct from airlines and aunt Betty/flight Centre goes for $5.5k, with GTG anywhere from $4.5-5k (fees included).

How are they able to provide such deep discount?

Under the bit about difficulties when changing dates etc as they are generally not easy on certain tickets.

          I am more concerned that:
          1. Ticket is not issued after booking
          2. Issued tickets are cancelled subsequently (often close to date of flight)
          3. scheduled delay (e.g. an hour) by the airline will cause the agent to cancel the ticket.

  • valid for 12 mths? sometimes i see these return tickets and they are only valid for like 6-12 weeks!

  • Miserable luggage allowance (but might suit some). Always check what it costs to select a seat. Some charge heaps.

I've seen too many people get burnt with random online discount travel agents. Usually I can find similar direct prices on the MH website but I can't with this one so buyer beware.

Flew MAS to KL 2 weeks ago and the standard has dropped significantly since pre COVID. I'd liken it to AirAsia service with included baggage - and much worse food.

Surely the standard is better than 2014 when you didn't even reach your destination alive….

    • Same thing happened to Singapore Airlines. I wish every airline had AirAsias nasi lemak. Godly for plane food

      • True. Their chinese 'treasure' rice is questionable at best

For those going from Melbourne, if you want the much newer plane (A330neo), pick MH148/149 for the MEL-KUL leg.

    • It's very slick in both cabins. Still not SQ level but a step up from their other 330s.

Ouch here's how they get you - booked direct with Malaysian which I thought a good move as if you go for the next up from basic fare you get 25kg and free seat selection (and a lot of the seats are included). Total fare Mel to UK A$1729, BUT you can't pay in A$. The half dozen currency options all convert to about A$1836, but my Amex was charged A$1890!

Ah, you can actually pay it in A$ after all if you don't select the multi currency option - that's a A$160 lesson (sod it)

So a shocking exchange rate, but I get free travel insurance by using the Amex. Well worth it for a 4.5 month trip.

    • Have you checked the free insurance covers a trip that long? My credit card insurance has a limit of 90 days per trip.

      • Yes. That’s the only reason I got the Amex. It covers up to 6 months.

    • You can pay with AUD, just leave the currency selection box blank. I just went through the process with no issues. Some other tricks of booking direct:
      - No processing fee if you use Paypal (but 1% if using card)
      - If travelling with children, upgrading to "economy basic" actually makes the fare cheaper. plus you get all the extra perks like free seat selection

  • Are you sure you get 20kg? I just got it for $1500 and its only with 10kg luggage and 12 hour layover in KL.
