Decent specs for a really good price +1

    • +5

Except for the 768p ("HD") model.

      • -6

it's cheap af lmao, what do you expect?

        • +16

There's other refurb around the 300 price with fhd screens though. 768p is awful in 2025 imo on a laptop. It's usable on cheap phones and handhelds only.

@ReaperX22: It was awful 10 years ago when my kids were in primary school, and constantly having to scroll up and down in Reading Eggs or Mathletics on the crappy Chromebook I bought them. But it was under $200 brand new. We expect better in 2025 :-)

          • +1

@ReaperX22: Fair, although i see value for the price.

I'll hand my OzB Membership in on the way out.

          • -1

@ReaperX22: 1080p is awful as well.

      • Have an x360 touchscren that cost me $139 almost two years ago and the screen resultion is just not enough

  • Intel Gen 8 is getting relatively slow these days.

    • +2

"relatively". If it feels slow for normal web/office/study use, you have software problems, or insufficient RAM. 16GB is plenty.

    • +1

For general use, they're fine. 8th gen for optiplex/lenovo mini units are still amazing for running proxmox/docker/home server stuff. Plenty fast! A lot of older 8th gen still outperform the new super power efficient chips like N100s etc that people seem to love for a similar price… So there's certainly still uses for 8th gen IMO, especially given it officially supports Win11

    • Its fine, the issue that turns most off is the poor res screen

    • I personally think its fine, especially for web and office work.

I still occasionally use my xps 13 with turbo boost off too. Still lasts close to 10 hrs

    • +1

It isn't just that 8th Gen speed is slow. There are no future security updates for 8th Gen drivers on Windows, which means some of the protection features are not available. This applies to Windows 11.

  • Is the Toshiba have a new battery too?

    • Hi, no they dont have new battery but their battery health is good as well. At least 80%-90%.

  • +1

Some of the 11th gen refurb on ebay is only $100 more though

    • link?

    • You can find a lot of these on FB marketplace as well

      • +3

Yea. Won't be hard to find. Hardly a deal when better spec (newer) for similar money.

Example (not even a deal, just the usual price)

        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/235199316988 ($319 after discount code)

        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/306219776026

        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/306142783983

$449 with $30 discount code for eBay plus.

Not shting on OP, but the old gen 8 machines should really be in the below $200 mark and the resolution is only suitable for connecting to an ext display.

Hi, thanks for sharing but hope you checked that some of these laptops got pre-existing issues like:

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/235199316988 - Potential issues with battery as there is no warranty as mentioned in listing

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/306142783983 - Keyboard's click button are not working and white spots on screen - mentioned at the listing

          • +6

@Skymstr: Yes. Therese are just examples and not even considered a deal or possibly not a like for like comparison.

Merely to demonstrate how expensive it is for outdated machines, which the gen 10 machines (better resulting) can be had for sub $100 more.

In fact, I think this is an excellent deal https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/235199316988 we can argue it has no warranty. But the ThinkPad are proven to be indestructible. Out of 40 of our corp device, only one had a bloated battery.

$300 for a close to 10 years old gen 8 Intel machine is bit of a stretch.

We have just given 40 gen 8 ThinkPad T to charity - pretty much where they belong. Worth resurrecting if it's cheap/free, but hardly a deal when we need to factor in a thin margin a commercial setup slaps onto these machines.

            • @Flutterby: We had about 30 of the same Thinkpad L13 Gen 2 model, and about 1/2 of them had either their main USB-C port die, or the CMOS battery die, within 3 years. Sometimes both. Can't say they are that reliable.

              • @ldd-mn: "about 1/2"

                Pretty bad.

So far ones we have are okay (personal and work), the Ts and Xs are rather robust based on experience.

Some outlasted the the newer consumer grade stuff.

                • @Flutterby: Yeah normally they are fine, either it was a bad batch we happened to get, or an issue with just that model

How would this do for a budget local LLM ai server?

    • +6

      Horribly

      • Maybe I'm a little daft but I don't know why I was negged. I've watched a few YouTube videos on budget ai server systems and done very limited research & wondered what the community thought of it because I'm still learning. I think perhaps I will include this kind of information next time I have a genuine question. Please be gentle, I'm a bit deflated 😅

  • Having owed a HP with a i5-8250U.

It sucked and the keyboard on it is f#$@!d

  • Any deals on sff or micro? Want to start a home server

    • Hi, we got some really old 6th or 7th gen ones if you are interested.

  • If I order a Toshiba tomorrow/Wednesday, with standard processing and standard delivery (I need to keep it under $300), when should I expect to receive it?

    • Depends on your location and your queue in the order.

      • Location is Chatswood 2067. What does the current queue look like?
I could order tonight, but I need to be confident that I would get it by 30th.

  • Hi, you should receive within 30th if ordered tonight.

    • I've just made Order #cpcVEABU
I would appreciate it, if you could expediate it.
Or give me a heads up if its likely to be delayed, so that I could cancel.
      Thanks

Isn't it disgusting to buy a device with a 2nd hand keyboard?

  • What's the street address of Corporate PC? The website doesn't have it under Contact Us or About. Before I order online from a site I've never heard of, I always check there's a physical address. If none provided, it's a red flag to me.

    • It's free and easy to check ABN + ASIC register, all public information.

I had a look and it goes back to a residential address in Victoria.

  • Is the Toshiba output smoothly to 2x2k screens (via a dock for enough ports)?
