    My personal opinion is that if you are going to go wifi 7 you should also go tri-band at the same time. What do others think?

    • why?

    • It depends what you're doing on your network and how much you want to spend.

      RT-BE58U is fast for most use cases even though it's dual-band. Asus has the RT-BE92U with tri-band 6GHz, 320MHz channels, (1) 10GbE and (4) 2.5GbE ports however it's double the price.

  • well, I remember once upon a time many years ago when 5ghz wifi was very new and nobody else had a 5ghz router so it was absolutely awesome. Fast Forward to now when new routers are getting 6ghz, a lot of people won't be on that for a long time.

    I've been using it since Christmas.
    For home, smartphones, TV, PS5. Computers. I'm very satisfied, I bought it for the superloop 1000/50 plan. + I have Nord VPN (offer from Ozb) logged into the router

    • Whats the real speed like? If most devices are not wifi 7 and possibly not even wifi 6

  • Is there any point getting this if I'm on fttb on 100/40?

    Currently using an tp link archer vr600 which seems pretty old now. I believe I would still need to use that as a modem though?

    Or does anyone have a modem/router combo to recommend?

      FTTB = TP-Link Archer VR600 VDSL2 modem + Asus RT-BE58U router.

      If you prefer a modem/router all-in-one there is the Asus DSL-AX82U, TP-Link Deco X50-DSL or TP-Link Deco X73-DSL.

        I would personally not got a Deco. From everything I've read you can't turn off band steering (eg so you can't have a separately named 2.4ghz and 5ghz networks). I've had numerous modems and routers in my time and band steering has never worked well, so 5ghz devices end up stuck on 2.4ghz.

        These days I'm running a Unifi Cloud Gateway, U6+ access point (and POE injector). Unfortunately prices on Unifi gear has gone up so if I were to buy them now I would pay more than I did in October last year when I got them.

        I'm also on FTTB, I just use an old TPG VR1600V that I found in Hard Waste in Bridge mode, though @liam1983 you are correct that being stuck on 100/40 the only reason to have wifi6 is if you do a lot of file transfers between PC's wirelessly which are wifi 6 equipped. In my house I have 37 devices and only 5 of them have wifi 6 (two iphones, two macbook airs, and an Apple TV). So, really, in all likelihood you probably don't even need wifi 6 for a very long time really though most routers you get these days will probably have it.

          Yeah you can't turn off the Deco's band steering however you can create 2.4GHz or 5GHz guest Wi-Fi networks for IoT devices.

          TP-Link Archer VX1800v modem/router is another choice or get the Asus DSL-AX82U if you want to turn off band steering.
