$1,119 worth of software for free? I wonder what the catch is…

Seriously though, if you value your privacy/data (which you absolutely should), avoid these apps.

    • I've used Winxvideo AI for a long time; what suspicious activity are you seeing?

I'm behind a pfsense router, so I have pretty good visibility to my data; what should I look for?

I haven't used any of this software, but as the saying goes: if it's free, you are the product.

        • In this case, it's not free. ('it' being, the current version of the software).
You're being given an old version, that no longer updates it's models (in a field that updates practically daily) in the hopes you'll like it enough to buy it.
It's about the only tool that approaches what Topaz VideoAI can do. It sure doesn't meet it, but it's also only about $75, not $425.

Seriously though, if you value your privacy/data (which you absolutely should), avoid these apps.

I don't understand why this is 'serious'.
I just gave a couple a quick going over in https://any.run/ and besides the expected generic metadata, I can't see what privacy you're surrendering that makes you serious in suggesting we should avoid these (other than the typical bloatware, like updaters and whatnot, the company isn't a saint, they cash grab whatever they can).

The company has been a go-to for nearly 20 years now for DVD ripping. How long do you expect to wait for the negative payload to trigger?

@MasterScythe: If you're at the very least providing your email address just to obtain the software, then that is the trade you are making.

If you're willingly trading that information just to trial said software, then that is your prerogative.

To me, all of the apps on offer seem like bloatware with hidden costs. Surely more reputable alternatives exist.

            • @topherboi: I don't think anybody fell for that.
              I used a 10minute mail address.

Its not a trial licence. Im running it now.
Canceled my monthly licence i was paying for it, now i have this. Im quite happy with the current models.

20 years in the industry, with well used tools, is fairly reputable, no?

                Fell for what?

Its not a trial licence. Im running it now.

                Sure, but for how long?

20 years in the industry, with well used tools, is fairly reputable, no?

I also used Winxdvd 'back in the day' when it wasn't bloated with other crap (cough AI). Would I trust it now? Nah, I'm good.

                • @topherboi:

Would I trust it now? Nah, I'm good.

                  Based on what?
What negative actions are you seeing it take?

I just ran winxdvd through any.run, I can't see anything shady happening.

                    @MasterScythe:

                    Based on what?

My lack of trust in the industry and people in general?

There's a catch to software trials, always has been, always will be.

However, you clearly have had a positive experience, so please don't let me deter you from continuing to use it.

Lots of these seem to be time limited - 6 month and 1 year licences.

Does this by chance sign me up to 17 premium newsletters?

  • Winxvideo AI …wish it can de-mosaic videos by AI……XD

    • Nope, but its a fantastic deinterlacer, and the models handle vhs content very well.
