Men’s Anti-Perspirant Recommendations

Hey all,

I’m on the hunt for a new men’s antiperspirant and could really use some recommendations.

I’ve been using Dove (the kind you can grab at most supermarkets for under $5 a can) for a while now. Before that, I was using Rexona, which was around the same price range. Both have been pretty good for a few months, but here’s the issue: my body seems to get used to them over time. After a while, they don’t seem to work as well. It’s not like I’m doing any heavy physical activity—I barely break a sweat. Oddly, If i’m in a draft or it’s cold out I tend to sweat more…. at first I was like maybe i'm not applying these right… i.e leaving it damp when spraying… but ive tried a hairdryer under there to even rule that out!

Any suggestions for something that’s both effective and reasonably priced? I’m open to trying new brands, especially ones that last longer or have some special formula; not sure if its worth going for a roll-on?

Maybe its not just me?

Edit: Appreciate the responses, the main take away im seeing is go for a roll on, so imma give that a go as the first step

Nivea roll on invisible it’s like $2.50 a bottle frequently

    • +3

yes love it, invisible black and white, I order from Amazon with free delivery with prime when they're on sale for 50% off and they are on sale often!

  • +9

I like the clinical protection roll-on ones. Dove or Rexona (same thing, just different branding and scent). The cream stick applicator version is ok too

Only buy em when they're on sale

    • Interesting two votes for roll ons… sprays no good?

      • +2

idk, I haven't used spray ons in ages. roll-on just seems more direct, and I only use it for my pits anyway

      • +4

Roll on ensures even and proper coverage, change my mind.

        Roll-On Deodorants
Fewer Aerosols – Roll-ons don’t contain propellants, making them a better choice for those concerned about inhaling chemicals.
Lower Alcohol Content – Many roll-ons have less alcohol, reducing the risk of skin irritation.
More Direct Application – Since roll-ons are applied directly to the skin, they may contain fewer volatile compounds.

        Spray Deodorants
Propellants & Aerosols – Sprays often contain butane, propane, or isobutane, which can irritate sensitive skin and contribute to air pollution.
Higher Alcohol Content – Many sprays use alcohol to help the product dry quickly, but this can cause dryness or irritation.
Fragrance & Preservatives – Some sprays contain synthetic fragrances and preservatives that may trigger allergies or sensitivities.

If you’re looking for a gentler, more skin-friendly option, roll-ons might be better. If you prefer quick-drying and convenience, sprays could work—just be mindful of the ingredients.

I find that the aluminium-free brands feel better for me, although I find the application matters a lot more than the product. Roll-on or paste all the way. Roll on a reasonable amount then use your fingers to spread it around.

"Oh, but then I'll get it on my fingers". Yes, yes you will. Wash it off. If you try to roll the entire area you want to apply, it's always way too much and it takes forever to dry and you're wasting product.

  • +6

re pricing. Coles and Woolies take turns in selling deodorants at half price. Check online before you buy.

    • Gotta be even better then that! Your reject shop, priceline and chemist warehouse sometimes even do better then the coles/woolies half price sales! cough price gouging

      • Amazon often have good prices

  • I have transitioned accross to roll on, worth a shot.

  • +2

You're going to smell so good at this wedding. Watch out ladies.

    • Remember I'm going cosplay! I should be looking for recommendations for aftershave! Omg, the next forum topic, right!?

      • +4

Go as Sully from monsters inc. He wears 'wet dog' odourant.

  • +1

I've heard L'oreal Men Expert Thermic Resist is supposed to be the business. Apparently it has a high level of active ingredient, but I couldn't verify.

  • +7

    Lynx Africa, applied liberally.

    Also, WTF:

ive tried a hairdryer under there

    • I did that once … since they say you should ensure sprays are applied when your skin is dry…. I was trying to rule out whether that was the cause of them not really working…. Lynx africa is a deodorant… not anti perspirant

Edit I take it back… seems like they do make a anti perspirant … might pass though

      • +7

Lynx Africa is a rabbit fumigant

    • +4

      Lynx Africa

The pungent smell of a male lynx urine mixed with a dead whale on a tropical beach. From experience ppl who skip showers wear it.Also good to de-stink wheelie bins.

( although the outcome is debatable, as far as improving the cooked on whiff of putrefication.)

  • you may have hyperhidrosis or frey's syndrome

    • Love the price but pomegranate & lemon verbena?

    • -1

      Men's?

      • +2

Men can wear pomegranate and lemon verbena too.

  • The rexona white/black roll on in the plastic tube is the best I've used so far. Just don't put on too much and it lasts like 1-2 months. $3 bucks at chemist warehouse most of the time and I normally buy 3-5.

    • 1-2 months…?! Brother ewww you should have showers more often than that!

      • 1-2 rolls each armpit? Put too much on and it clogs your pores. So, let's median and say I'm doing 100 rolls per two months. How many applications should you get lol

  • Before that, I was using Rexona, which was around the same price range. Both have been pretty good for a few months, but here’s the issue: my body seems to get used to them over time

Yep I totally get this. I find that if I apply an anti-perspirant after my shower at night, and a deodorant stick (Not anti-perspirant) during the day, this combo works perfectly for me.

I use Rexona Sports for night, and a Old Spice High Endurance during the day and my BO stays at bay. As I work in a warehouse, I would know very quickly if it didn't :P

And I also stay away from sprays. I also shave my armpits, so not sure if that makes a difference.

    • +1

where do you get the old spice from, cole’s and woolies nolonger stock it. I found as a deodorant it worked all day if i applied after shower in the. morning or after shower if i ride to work. amazon has old spice but veryyy expensive compared to what it used to cost at cole’s or woolies.

      • iherb. I buy a heap when I order my melatonin.

  • +1

Was using the Thank You brand, but have switched to the QV roll on.

    • Can confirm the QV roll on is very nice, I've been using it for a few years now and haven't looked back. I believe they have both an anti-perspirant and a deodorant version. I only use the deodorant version as I spend most of the day in air-conditioning.

  • Rexona or Dove Clinical Protection. You'll never perspire from your armpits again.

    • +1

Thanks for the flashback to my mum. "Horses sweat, men perspire, and ladies glow!"

  • +2

    Anything with aluminium chlorohydrate.

The others use anti-bacterial chemicals, and are not as effective.

    • What about Aluminum Sesquichlorohydrate?

      • Maybe I'm missing a joke, but in this context its the same thing.

    • +1

I recently bought a non-aluminium version by accident and started smelling minor BO. Def stick with alumninium roll on.

  • +4

    Use roll-on, sprays are useless.

Buy whatever is on special at coles/woolworths.

  • -7

Collect dog poo from dog park and sticky tape it under your armpits. It will prevent people from approaching you so they won't smell your BO.

  • I use Nivia Silver Protect for under arms and bum crack. Sometimes I splash on some very old Old Spice.

  • apply your deodorant on dry skin after you have showered & put it on the night before as instructed on the container itself

  • I once worked with a guy who had some sort of problem/health issue? that caused excessive perspiration and his doctor put him on to Prantal Powder. It's no longer sold here so he now uses DriTal Perspiration Controlling Powder which has the same active ingredient.
It contains Diphemanil methylsulfate which basically stops the sweating.
No idea if it's useful for long term, regular use so do your own research please.

    • +4

      Was the guy you?
You know a lot about his personal hygiene products.

      • +1

        Was the guy you?
You know a lot about his personal hygiene products.

        ;o) Nope, not me.

He just felt comfortable discussing personal issues with me. It's actually a good feeling to have someone feel they can share things with you.

  • Rexona 72 hours Xtra Cool anti-perspirant - I get it when it's half price at $4.75 and stock up for a few months.

    Haven't had any issues.

I have also used the Dove stuff but prefer the Rexona.

    • Rexona 72 hours

Who is this marketed at. People that don't shower for 3 days?

  • +4

While I might not have anything extra to add regarding choices made, my recommendation would be to pluck / shave any armpit hair, removing armpit hair (about every month) helps reduce sweat retention and bacterial growth, which can minimise body odor.

  • +1

I use Body Crystal Botanica roll on - only annoying thing is I never see it on special.

  • -1

LYNX Africa is the OG isn't it?
I remember the boys change rooms in high school to be a foggy chemical gas chamber of various deodorants. One spark and the entire block would explode.

    • My kids use Lynx.

  • -2

How many people actually don't have to use deodorant? I get if you have physical jobs but if you are sitting in an air conditioned office all day, is it necessary? For some reason I always found I sweat more, stink more and am less comfortable using deodorant/anti-perspirant

    • Same. Unless I'm doing something involving physical exertion it's just not an issue as long as I'm not using chemicals on my pits. When I do need something I previously used one of those crystal deoderants, but have since started using No Pong and found it to be more effective and less irritating.

    • +1

      Also depends on your genes.

From social media, I found out that Koreans don't have a particular gene that gives them BO

      • +1

I grapple with plenty of Korean dudes who smell (as is totally normal). So not sure that's quite right haha

      • This is true, I have many Korean friends and they don't use deodorant and don't smell. They said there is no such product as deodorant in Korea and no Korean word for it

    • i take the train to work , and use deodorant because if standing i hold to the rail, and if person next to me is shorter , im 183cm, their face is close to my arm pit. but i also wear natural fibers which might do something about how much i perspire and bacteria.

      • Natural fibres all the way

  • I find Lavilin to be very effective although expensive. But you only need to apply a dab. They have free samples https://lavilin.com.au/shop/.

    • although expensive

Agree. I just had a look. Even the free samples are expensive at $3.00 per little packet.

    • I find it difficult to apply Lavilin on underarm hair. And it also discolours my business shirts. Love the idea, but not a fan of the product in practice.

  • Mitchum 0% aluminum. Works well but a little pricey.

  • Hey OP — is your concern odour, sweat, or both?

I know you've asked for an anti-perspirant recommendation, but recommendation will depend on your concern.

In the meantime, I suggest against roll-ons for men, only because they tend to "pick up" the odour-causing germs on your pits.

    • More so, sweat? With the spray it doesnt actually smell..(maybe because of the spray?) if that makes sense?

  • I used to have the same issue, and I switched to Rexona Sport roll-on and that seems to work for me (I've been using it for 10+ years now). I also use the hairdryer to make sure the deodorant is dry before getting dressed which helps. Good luck!

  • I use Deonat natural crystal stick. Great

  • +4

Mitchum unscented roll on paired with whatever scent you like is actual best combo you will never go back

  • Try No Pong (best scent for me is Enchanted Forest). It's a cream, but VERY effective. Keeps BO away for 2-3 days (don't ask how I know heh heh). I was concerned about staining of underarms of shirts, but minimal. Less than roll-on deodorants.

  • +1

Swedish guy goes into his local chemist and asks for an anti-perspirant.
Chemist then asks "Boll or aersol?"
Swede responds "neither, i want it for my armpits.

  • +1

Try No More Sweat daily. If you sweat alot then try there body product. Works a treat.

  • Hey Op, a lot of products the body gets used to. I find i have to switch around products. ive tried no sweat, dove spray, rexona spray, clinical protection, lynx etc nothing works.

The Rexona 72hr roll sport is one of the best around. This is the normal one at amazon, but woolies usually have the sports one. Both are good.

Mitchim roll on > other roll ons and worth trying before paying heaps for clinical ones.

  • Chemist at Play UnderArm RollOn

  • I abandoned spray a long time ago and have never looked back.
    Been using Nivea roll ons.
Half the price of the spray, and the roll on must have four times the applications

  • Sukin natural deodorant.. I used to be on nivea roll on and after reading reviews how bad it is for your health then switched to Sukin natural deodorant

  • Check out the comments on these deals:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/nopong.com.au

I have been using them its so good it doesn't irritate my skin and easy to wash off as well…

  • wonder if your personal bacteria flora build up resistance if you use the same antiperspirant long enough, like antibiotic resistant bacteria build up resistance to antibiotics ? gues that’s where deodorants come in.

  • +1

No Pong, stops smell, isn't irritating, lasts all day, washes off pretty easily in a hot shower, can't complain at all other than the price.

    • +1 for No Pong. Its cheaper to buy directly from their website too

  • For me an anti-perspirant/deo only needs to last for a day as I have a shower every day - so it doesn't benefit me to get something that lasts for 2-3 days. I appreciate not everyone fits into this camp but live and let live

    • Oh i get that too, Im the same, but all of them these days say 48 hour protection. I can't say I've seen many that only say 24 hours

  • Rexona clinical protection is currently $3.60 from Amazon with subscribe and save fyi (I just bought one)

  • I've noticed a lot of roll-on recommendations but the issue I find with them is that it smudges on your shirt if you put one on quickly after applying it. Do people just wait around until it dries? For that reason I use those dry stick deodorants: www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/667579

I wish I could find unscented ones.

  • If you don't want metals and chemicals going into your body these two are good options that both work well for keeping sweaty armpits at bay.

    Schmidt's

    Earth's Purities

  • Norsca in the pump style. Only deodorant that manages to keep me fresh for a full day.

  • +3

If you don't want to pump chemicals into your blood stream with questionable long term effects then go with a mostly natural deodorant instead. I like Moogoo as it really works for me… and I can get pretty stinky.

    • Agreed. Moogoo and Lavilin are my go to.

  • +1

Personally, I avoid those 24h and 48h sprays, they leave you sticky for days, block your pores.. and contain aluminium. Have tried a few natural things but none have worked as well as "Body Crystal Roll On Deodorant", my under arms can sweat, as they're meant to, but there is never any BO

  • I like sprays. Rockface, L'Oreal or Norsca Instant Adrenaline. Not a fan of Rexona, Dove or Nivea.

  • Get the cream ones where you turn the bottom. Rexona clincal and Mitchell’s are both good. Unscented. Then find a solid fragrance. Also do your T-shirts on the hottest setting — worst part of stress sweats is the worry that it will activate some dormant bacteria and start to stink mid day.

  • I use these. they prevent the smell vs masking it or closing poors that make your arm pit itchy.

Prevent the bacteria that creates the smell.

Natural Deodorant Super Fan Value Set
    https://moogoo.com.au/products/natural-deodorant-super-fan-v…

  • Don't use the ones which have aluminium in there

  • Yeah, definitely roll-on would be better than spray.

Also FWIW, what are you wearing? A lot of "fast fashion" clothing are made of cheap synthetic fibres that are not breathable and, as a result, the anaerobic bacteria under your arm can operate and metabolise your sweat. If you wear higher quality, more breathable clothing (e.g. wool is usually a good option), then the underarm moisture will naturally wick away and there will be more air circulation which will naturally prevent the body odour, as the bacteria cannot grow or metabolise.

Good example of this is people who go to the gym before work in the morning, then put on a polyester business shirt which will trap the moisture and humidity in. Instead, try a linen or wool-blend shirt and you'll find much less body odour naturally. Generally polyester shirts will trap the moisture and humidity in, and cotton will absorb sweat keeping the underarms humid.
