Some DoorDash related sad story

Hey fellow OzBargainers, during the Easter break, I placed a pickup order via DoorDash. When I arrived at the store to collect it (on time), I was told that they don't accept DoorDash orders on public holidays and suggested I raise the issue with DoorDash.

I contacted DoorDash, and representatives at different support levels told me I wasn't eligible for a refund. After repeating my story about 20 times, they eventually escalated it, but the outcome remained the same.

I paid $50+ for the order with a gift card, so a chargeback isn't an option. I'm wondering which authority I can complain to about their practice?

Cheers

UPD: It seems, it is the store fault.

Guessing OP is an EALD speaker. I empathise. This would piss me off to no end

  • Go to the office of the prime minister

    • I guess your point is that hardcore OzBargainers prefer to withdraw in such situations?

      • +3

My point is that your trying to argue your point with low paid off shore script monkeys who just want to pass you onto the next person down the line so they maintain their KPIs and get paid their couple of dollars for the week. No one cares, your attempt is futile.

        • Yes, I've had enough time to clearly realise this. That's why I want to lodge a formal complaint with Australian authorities in the hope that something will eventually change. Of course, I've already lost hope of recovering my money.

The best thing to do is to never use DoorDash again.

Uber, DD, all of these "gig economy" businesses are just total scams by tech bros in San Fran.

Imagine thinking of Uber Eats as a business idea and pitching it. "We're going to make sure the restaurants make no money, and in some cases lose money, the food will arrive cold and sometimes missing items, and the people delivering it will make next to nothing as well".

    • I agree and I will stop using them. What pisses me off is that my situation is pretty black/white. They simply took my money without attempting to provide any food.

      • +1

it sounds like an edge case combined with poor customer service. These companies make customer service very difficult, you can never really "talk" to anyone and they want you to just give up.

These companies only exist because people use them. If people stop using them, they'll fail, and they should.

its the store that took your money and just told you to go away

Contact Fair Trading or equiavalent in your state.
Your local MP's office may be able to suggest other avenues.

    • Thank you

    • This is like asking someone for $20 spare change. Good luck

      • +3

Yes it will be a low return endevour for the OP. But the more people complain to Fair Trading or other relevant authorities about these kinds of practices from these kinds of businesses, the easier it is for someone to crack down on it. Or you know, just bend over and let a supposedly legitimate business comit theft, don't complain about it and let that become the norm in Australia.

Do you really believe they will do something ha. Okay.

          • +1

@Fredfloresjr: I don't 'believe'. But what are our tax dollars going to them for if they aren't going to do something about dodgy businesses?

        • That's exactly my point.

  • +2

In my experience with DD customer service, when I receive an incorrect order or its super late, if you talk nicely to the customer service rep they most times just credit your account with the amount of the stuff up. I don't think they can process refunds, but they can issue credits.

    • Did it happen recently? I've been using them for 2-3 years, quite frequently - every couple of days. More than year ago I had a minor issue, which was resolved quickly, exactly as you described.
But with this issue, it was just constant "f** off". Probably Gen AI support in action.

      • +1

December last year. If you suspect it's AI now perhaps try asking if you can speak to a human straight up.

      • +1

wait, what? this sounds like you were using some kind of online chat, you need to ring them and talk to them in person, an issue like this would be resolved almost intantly

      • +1

So quite frequently you've been happily giving money away to tech bros in the US instead of local restaurants? I'm glad you've posted as hopefully others will be less likely to use this 'service'.

If your claim is Doordash stole your money, and you have the proof to match the accusation, then the police is your solution

    • +4

To ensure you get the police's attention, order a dozen donuts through doordash and take those with you

  • During the Easter break, I placed a pickup order via DoorDash. When I arrived at the store to collect it (on time), I was told that they don't accept DoorDash orders on public holidays and suggested I raise the issue with DoorDash.

err, if the status was: ready for pickup in your DD app, then the restaurant accepted your order. I've had restaurants cancel my order before (they were closing in 30m) and the credit was returned to my acc instantly. If they weren't accepting DD on public holidays, they should have cancelled your order and not kept your $.

Speak again to the restaurant, there's other avenues you can pursue as well.

    This sounds ridiculous, OP.

    • don't care about the downvotes but find this extremely hard to believe.

A restaurant not providing the order that you placed and refuses to refund you. Never have I ever seen that.

Show us your doordash order and account screenshot? just hide personal info. I bet there is more to this story.

      • Doesn't sound like you've ever used doordash then, because this is basically their business model. The restaurant probably can't refund from their end because they never received the money or order.

        • Have you? The restaurant has to 'confirm' the order before it proceeds further. If the restaurant didn't confirm the order then no money would have been taken.

i think there is context mixing

I placed a pickup order via DoorDash. <—- Why, Why not go through the store directly? was there any offer that made it cheaper?

When I arrived at the store to collect it (on time), I was told that they don't accept DoorDash orders on public holidays and suggested I raise the issue with DoorDash. <—- Did the store accept the order, if the store accepted the order and then didn't give you the items then this is technically theft by the retailer.

Did you get a recording of them refusing to give you the order. Do you have a screenshot of the order in your app, are you able to share it here?

If they dont accept Door Dash orders why did they leave their machine on and connected and taking orders, it doesnt make sense, if you go on doordash at the night you can many shops not available.

Let assume everything was true as you say (i am not saying you arent) but the shop is pretty dishonest to have their door dash machine on and taking orders, please contact the police and let them know

what is stopping someone getting a door dash machine and start selling stuff and accepting and telling people that they dont accept door dash orders on days that have the word day in their name

    • Exactly this. Why would they even 'mark' themselves as open if they werent accepting DD orders on that day? Its no different to if they were closed.

I think the OP is having issues with DD as the store has accepted the order and taken the money. As far as DD is concerned its transaction completed.

I would've kicked up a huge fuss in the store if i got there and they basically told me "no food, F off!"

    • +1 to this

    • It is one of our favorite fish-n-chips restaurant. We use them regularly. They have one downside – long waiting time. As well DoorDash had a discount on them (for local stores used first time), so the cost was pretty much the same as in store. So we placed the order on our way there. When we showed up, they told us that they don't accept DD orders on public holidays (the waiting time was 1.5 hours), showed us a turned off DD tablet and told us that DD shouldn't have allowed us to do so.

Anyway, yesterday I called DD support and they told me that can't do anything because their some actions about this order disabled. After that I contacted the store, the order was confirmed ant they didn't know what happened and they rose the issue from their side. I'll ring DD today to see how it's gone.

I'm not sure if it is a problem on the store side or in DD software, but I can say for sure - DD support is awful, they don't explain anything, just saying "no money this time".
Adding something like "our system show the order was completed, please contact the store" would help a lot.

one of their employees accepted the order in DD app, its 100% the shop's responsibility to mark it cancelled and talk to DD to get your money refunded. This could've been avoided if they had just marked it cancelled on the day

  • +3

The restaurant has basically scammed you.

They have your money, not Doordash. They have not provided you with the food despite accepting the order.

They want you to take responsiblity for the fact that they forgot to disable doordash, and also that one of their employees accepted the order. I'm not a doordash expert but I assume you have to mark yourself as closed on public holidays, rather then simply turning off the device.

Most likely the boss realised after the order was accepted that they wouldn't make enough profit on the order and wanted to get out of the order.

The restaurant deserves a negative review for sure just for not owning up to their own mistakes and bad practices.

    • +1

The Restaurant always makes a profit. Whatever commission they pay to Door dash they raise the menu prices equivalently. Restaurants are no saints, they pass onto the cost to you they don't absorb it themselves. This pretty much seems like a straight up scam.
