What Car Would You Choose if You Are to Be Gifted One?

If you can ask for a car of any price range, which car would you choose? Of course there are strings attached.

  • This will be your only regular vehicle for at least next ten years.
  • You are responsible for the cost of all the registration, service, maintenance, and insurance, etc.
  • The car should be in a reasonable condition in ten years, which means you need to service it regularly and be responsible for all the repair work (even if out of warranty).
  • You cannot resell the car.

I think it could reflect the balance between the reliability, ownership cost and personal preference. Just some random examples in the poll. You are free to add any cars.

    • -2

      There you go.

    • -3

Only option for Tesla's is painted swastikas 💯

      • +1

        For peace and good fortune?

Very popular in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.

    • Cancelled and tanking, just like it deserves.

    • +2

Something something Elon Musk is evil

      • -8

Typical leftist brains are short circuiting in record numbers. Elon good, Elon bad, Kamala good, Trump bad, EV good, but Elon bad, Jews bad, nazis bad, immigration good, crime bad, oh no so many paradoxes

  • +11

You post this question to ozbargain yet you post this condition:

You are responsible for the cost of all the registration, service, maintenance, and insurance, etc.

You need to know your audience.

    • +6

What is this insurance of which you speak?

      • +1

Is the insurance here in the room with us?

    • You get to pay for the rego, service, maintenance etc with gift cards and churn and burn your insurance.

      Sounds like ozb to me.

  • +12

    718 Cayman GTS 4.0 6-speed manual

    • +2

      Now we're talkin' 😉

    • +2

That would be my choice, too, except for the bit about it having to be my only car for the next 10 years makes me concerned about the practical aspects… I don't know if I'll still be able to get in and out of it 9 years from now :P

That said, I went for 12 years with a Nissan 370Z as my only car, so I could probably make it work :P

      • Porsche sports cars might be better daily drivers than other exotic brands but they are far from being an everywhere, anytime vehicle.

Porsches have really low suspension that they scrape on most driveways and speed bumps.

They're more like a weekend car or for specific routes.

        • What then would you choose?

          • +2

@sumyungguy: As a pragmatist I'd just copy the Police who are also drive daily drivers. Something like an BMW M3 or direct competitors (Audi RS4, RS6). They are still a VERY firm ride but don't scrape on anything except gutters.

            • @Mumbles: LMAO.

I was going to say a police car, but only if it came with all the lights and sirens…

            • +1

@Mumbles: I am pretty sure M3 has a stiffer suspension than RS cars. On the previous gen at least. BMW nailed it for the latest models they look wild.

            • @Mumbles: When you have adaptive air suspension (that I understand is part of most RS cars), the drive can be adjusted for comfort vs aggressiveness. So works swimmingly as a daily driver.

Just some random examples in the poll.

    What's the point of this?

if these are "random examples" then this isn't you asking us to tell you which car to get.

Your examples are also categories of cars rather than individual cars.

    BMW 3

M3? M3 Competitione? Base model? A 25 year old one? Coupe?

Given your weird conditions the only sensible option is a base model Toyota Camry.

    • +1

I bought an M340i last year and love it. Would happily keep that for 10 years, and probably will.

    • +4

The question should have been which Camry would you have, with a list of different models to choose from.

  • -1

1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé - or if it has to be a modern car Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail

i would then swiftly sell the car for 10s of millions and buy a regular car and a beach house

    • '61 Corvette

      AC Cobra

      Everatti Superformance Electric GT40

      V6 Camry

  • +2

    Pajero Evo. Dream car

  • +5

Camry but only if it comes in OG Champagne colour option.

    • +5

You wouldn't go the burgundy option with the sun burnt and peeling clear coat as standard?

Would you get the factory fitted box of tissues and crochet throw rug on the parcel shelf, or go aftermarket like an ARB kit?

      • burgundy and og white do hit different, but champagne i think is the most elite… actually you know what - that green one went alright too. Anything but silver imo.

Yeah those accessories gotta go after market, preferably JDM - I think a back seat cover in classic eastern european blanket style design would be a hit too

      • +3

Leave my Camry out of this!
It was burgundy with just a little peeling clearcoat above the front ps door and had a small arb sticker on the back window for the lolz.

    • +1

      Mint!

Which model? Mine would be the XV20, pre-facelift

      • Yep gotta be pre facelift

        • +1

Splash on the Brut 33 and make dem granny panties drop

      • pre-facelift

Not a fan of the reflector headlights on the facelift model?

        • Nah it’s the straight taillights that do it for me

  • +2

    Kia Cerato

  • +3

    911 T Manual.

Reliable & practical enough to use everyday.

    Even has 4 seats.

    • Towing capacity?
      .

  • +6

I would be picking something electric at least..

  • +4

    Audi RS3 hatchback.

But then I don't expect to live another 10 years.

Given that I was tempted to nominate a Koenigsegg Gemera. But it may not be delivered before I expire. But I'd be happy to only live as long as I could keep up the insurance and maintenance.

  • +2

You can cast your vote for Tesla now JV.

  • +2

McMurtry SpĂ©irling Pure… Just so I could have the chance to have too explain myself every time I told someone what I drive.

    "No no no. McMurtry IS the make… Yeah, it's called a SpĂ©irling… No, not Sterling, SpĂ©irling… yep, with a P… no no, it's the Pure… McMurtry, um, I think it's spelt M C M U R T R Y… No, it's not a Chevy/Ford/Tesla/etc…"

    • +2

"Fast electric fan with a seat" would be how I would describe it

      • +3

"Oh, so you said you're a big fan??"
"No, I said the car is basically a big fan…"
"Big fan of what? Anyway, didn't you say it sucks…"
        "Well, yeah, it does…"
"Well, why did you buy it?"
        *sigh*
        "Oh kay… sooo….."

        • "Well, why did you buy it?"
Response: watch how fast it accelerates
          .

    • +4

With Uncle Ian on the spanners should be in a reasonable condition in ten years.

    • You want a Marty McFly?

      A Boatie McBoatface? That’s a boat

  • +5

    Batmobile.

  • If you want absolute or closest to cheapest to maintain.

Toyota Corolla Sedan Hybrid. It has best aero dynamics of all the Corollas. Also it uses U91 where as the Camry asks for U95 (although you can use E10). You are also more likely to meet the fuel efficiency label. (I have 2021 officially rated at 3.5L/100km and I am getting 3.8L/100km, mostly city, have done 3.5L on a long freeway run).

  • Haval is the best

    • +1

      Lol

      • +5

        Havalol?

    • +1

It's only the best bang for buck if you're buying with your own money. OP said free car lol, so the most expensive one ie. $250k Tesla without too much maintenance is the best.

  • +2

    Mercedes G 580 - All electric G-Wagon

  • Aston Martin DBX and/or DBZ.

    Please adopt me, OP?!

    • +2

      I'd personally rather a manual DB9/DBS

  • Can have the RR and sell it and buy a couple of cars? I want an ioniq 5N for commuting and touring and a 4wd ute for carting toys, towing and playing in the mud.

  • +1

    a fun car

  • Lmao. Why would anyone pick a Tesla or a Corolla if they could pick any car of their choice?

  • Any car in the whole entire world? Gotta be the Toyota Camry

    • You're taking this too seriously mate.

    • +4

OMG! You had me at Fiat. 😍 A guy can only climax so much!

the worst Euro car, probably is Fiat

      Annnnd, you lost me.

      better than Honda.

      And I'm back!!!

Such a roller coaster of emotions….

    • your shtick is getting old

      • There's always Viagra

  • +4

It has to be Doc Brown’s DeLorean from Back to the Future Part II.

    • -1

Straight back to the sanity of the 80's.

  • +2

Maybe a Lexus would fit all the criteria. Luxury daily driver, Toyota reliability, OK resale value after 10 years, OK running costs.

  • Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail … for the resale value.

  • Subaru Sherpa.

  • If I couldn't sell ot, then the Hilux. And Id do with it the same as the last one - retire it on a family farm for scut work

  • +5

If the car if free, but I pay expenses, then easy: an EV.
Sorry, but Camry hybrid does not count.

How much is insurance for the Model S plaid?

  • +2

    Probably Lexus LX570

  • +2

Love the Merc G-Wagen and would not need any other cars.. It is an icon,
Yet could never justify the price..

  • +1

If I could be gifted any existing car of my choosing and daily it for 10 years, then I would desire a battery-electric version of the Hyundai N Vision 74 as it would be relatively cheap to run (and hopefully service) while having supercar-rivalling performance and looks (although the insurance and repairs would probably cost quite a bit as an exotic car).

However, if this scenario only applies to production models, I'd probably like a Hyundai Ioniq 6 TECHNIQ in gold (I don't mind either the current model or the upcoming facelifted one), which would have more reasonable ownership costs.

  • +2

If someone is covering the initial purchase price. I am going all out.
The 718 Porsche Boxster Spyder or Spyder RS is my dream car and the bills could be somewhat affordable on a normal wage. You could almost apply the same to a GT3. I have owned 4 used Porsches now and earn under 100k. So i think it would work.

But honestly. If I had the chance. I would go out and choose a Ferrari F40, F50, F430 manual or 458 Spyder. Or maybe a Singer 911. And let the running costs ruin me for 10 years.

  • +2

The only answer is a hyundai excel

  • +3

    Suzuki Mighty Boy

  • From that list, a BMW 3 series - assuming M3 wagon or 340i are included in that, and still relatively affordable to maintain.

Other than that, something old but still practical. XC Falcon wagon or something would be pretty sick, or a Stagea 260RS.

Basically any cool wagon would suit my needs for the next 10 years

  • +3

    Model S Plaid!

  • +1

    Eleanor.

  • Mercedes AMG G63, just so long as I don't need to take it to Mercedes for servicing.

    • G63 6x6 Brabus editon XLP 800

  • +1

where is the option for a 1975 Toyota Corona?

  • +1

Can I just have the money instead!!? Pretty please. LOL

  • I guess people don’t like byd lol

    • OK, BYD Dolphin.

or a NIO Firefly if you can cope with touchscreen overload

    • -1

Nobody knows if it would even be running by the end of the ten year scenario.

    • +1

BYD is too sensible. If you're going to be gifted something free, it'll need to be expensive like the quarter million dollar Tesla!
