What Car Would You Choose if You Are to Be Gifted One?

If you can ask for a car of any price range, which car would you choose? Of course there are strings attached.

  • This will be your only regular vehicle for at least next ten years.
  • You are responsible for the cost of all the registration, service, maintenance, and insurance, etc.
  • The car should be in a reasonable condition in ten years, which means you need to service it regularly and be responsible for all the repair work (even if out of warranty).
  • You cannot resell the car.

I think it could reflect the balance between the reliability, ownership cost and personal preference. Just some random examples in the poll. You are free to add any cars.

Can I just have the money instead!!? Pretty please. LOL

  • I guess people don’t like byd lol

    • OK, BYD Dolphin.

or a NIO Firefly if you can cope with touchscreen overload

    • -1

Nobody knows if it would even be running by the end of the ten year scenario.

    • +1

BYD is too sensible. If you're going to be gifted something free, it'll need to be expensive like the quarter million dollar Tesla!

      • Exactly. Get the most expensive car, sell it, buy something sensible.

    • +1

      virtue signalling much?

      • -1

        Aagh, "woke,virtue signalling" etc.
The sheep bleat of the new world order.

    • +2

Why are you upset over a non existed free car?

    • +3

What are you talking about? If you refuse to accept a free Tesla worth $250k then you need your Ozbargain license revoked ASAP. This isn't OzMorals.

  • Landcruiser Sahara ZX - plenty of space for the family and all my crap, reasonable running/insurance costs, excellent resale at the end of 10 years.

  • 79 series Landcruiser set up for bush rehabilitation and wildlife rescue.

Alternatively, a brand new 2004 gen 6 hilux with diff locks, gears and engine for around 150kw, also set up for bush rehab and wildlife rescue.

    Au Falcon
    For the classy among us.

  • Reliable, powerful, comfortable.

  • Toyota GR86 manual.

Not the fastest or most expensive model on the list, but god damn is it a nice and reactive car to drive around in.

  • +2

As long as it comes in top notch condition on day one, the 80's Porsche 911 Turbo (930).

My current car is a 2011 model and only has 60k since I don't drive it all that much, so maintenance shouldn't be a huge issue.
I could just about put this Porsche and club plates and still drive as much (or as little) as I currently do… almost.

    Can't resell it… damn, what a shame.
Reckon I could happily manage more than 10 years too.

Not street legal but I’ll just rack up fines and run it into the ground if I can’t afford to service it ;P

    • +1

For something a little more practical (hybrid with 4 seats) and street legal I might go for the Koenigsegg Gemera

      • All that ultra rich performance stuff - Rimac, Bugatti, Koeningsegg, Pagani… are absolutely mind blowing.

        • +1

All that ultra rich performance stuff - Rimac, Bugatti, Koeningsegg, Pagani… are absolutely mind blowing.

Makes me wonder if the people with enough spare money to buy these toys actually do any real good as well.

Also makes me realise how many obscenely rich people there are out there.
eg the Koenigsegg Gemera is a limited run of 300 cars (priced at somewhere around $4m). That's 300 people with a spare $4m just there.

  • Being responsible for the operational cost of the car should come with a budget. I mean, Lambo owners are also responsible for spending $10k $100k+ a year on maintaining it. So what's your appetite for the spend per year for this gifted car? $1k, $2k, $5k, $10k ?

    • If someone bought me a 1986 Batmobile I'd sell my soul, my first born kid and a kidney if that's what I had to do to afford its upkeep!

      • +1

That covers the first year. What about the second?!

        • My first thoughts are why would I need a second year because I'd already died and gone to heaven following the first year but then decided that second year should be even easier than the first.

By the time my second year rolls around, I'm better at sourcing discounted gift cards, amazing groupon deals and churning various service providers to maximise freebies, discounts and loyalty points.

My organ trafficking ring is also functioning more productively so I'm no longer reliant on those organs only my body can supply and I'm beginning to like my other children a bit less so am becoming more prepared to sell those if I need to as well.

Finally, I'm adept at sucking the soul out of anyone, so even though I've cashed in mine, I've got access to plenty more.

911 GT3 992 or 991 generation. No turbos, naturally aspirated and quite a reliable machine.

  • Delorian with flux Capacitor….. Maybe with the nike boots too.

    Suzuki mighty boy

    Grumobile,

The height of the driving position is fantastic and visibility is second to none.

  • Honda Accord Euro CL9

  • no Chinese cars yet they sell like hot chocolate cakes

OP asked what cars people would like to be gifted, not what cars people buy because they’re poor.

      • +2

The 2024 MG Cyberster electric sports car is expected to be priced at around $100,000 in Australia. While the rear-wheel-drive version is available in other markets, MG Australia is initially offering only the all-wheel-drive model. The Cyberster is the first MG sports car since the company came under Chinese ownership and is the most expensive MG model to be sold in Australia.

        • It will be interesting to see how popular that will be.

          • @mapax: being an MG owner myself …
would only rate their cars (various reasons) + aftermarket service == 2.8 out of 5.

While they (mostly hit the price point to purchase NEW) … when you drill down == certainly the not best car to buy (or be gifted) - for many reasons.

  • For 10 years?

Give me a powerful, luxury, fully fitted and massively souped up panel van.

    Please …

  • VW Karmann Ghia or a Volvo P1800. Cheers for that.

  • Already 9 options in poll … yet Mazda was voted as in TOP 6 - "most reliable car brands in 2023" … by carsguide + carsales.

Even though I chose Toyota Camry in the poll … I would actually choose a Mazda over a Camry if gifted.
My sister was gifted a Mazda (by our parents) - so can relate.

  • 1969 GTS monaro Bathurst special all matching plates, with 0kms.

  • Xiaomi su 7

  • Toyota LandCruiser 300 series GR Sport

  • "only regular vehicle for at least next ten years."
Manual converted HSV Avalanche XUV, might as well add a supercharger whilst we're at it
    .

  • Why no Pagani Zonda option?

  • Batmobile… The chicks love the car

  • Volvo XC90: Just for the music, with other stuff going for it.

  • Toyota Tundra

  • Plugin Hybrid Ute. The GWM Cannon (which is being released soon), otherwise the BYD shark.

  • Datsun

  • Volvo V60 T8 ♥️

  • 1970's Ford Mustang, but to drive every day a Telsa Model S Plaid, or Model Y Performance. If you have driven a Tesla difficult to drive anything else.

  • Rolls-Royce. ^_^

I already know due to the way the Poll was formed that the OP likes their Nissan GTRs.

  • if it's a gift, then maybe an EV like Tesla
if I am spending my own cash, then definitely a boring but reliable Toyota or Honda

  • Instant cream!

  • BYD Shark!

  • Obviously the most expensive one so I can sell it and buy what I really need

  • Porsche 928 Nardone

  • +2

    Saleen S7

  • The Zeekr 009

  • +1

The one with the highest resale value.

  • would like a FJ cruiser in blue or yellow.

Looks like Herr Musk has recruited some votes directly

    • I got shown an internet image of a broken steering wheel from what turned out to be an ldv. Apparently the owner was climbing in or out of vehicle and the central part which looked like a casting cracked apart allowing the spoke and rim part of wheel to partially separate itself
      .

      • Not sure the chemists and metallurgists over there have their shit together

  • A Jetson's car.

Remember the cars they had in the cartoon "The Jetsons".

One of those would be cool, I mean the delivered you directly to you're desired destination. They never had any problems finding a car park and from memory, they never took up any room in your garage leaving it free to utilise in other ways.

  • It will be a fuel efficient car with a lot of space. Service cost will be reasonable.

  • +1

Is there a high yield option?

  • I am going for either a Denza Z9 GT or a Xiaomi SU7 Ultra
