Why Have Protein Powder Prices Risen Insanely?

Honestly they have skyrocketed. It's insane. Even Amino Z have gone up. Bulk Nutrients are high too.

Any sneaky specials out there for WPI for like 40 bucks?

If not then I guess no more protein powder for me.

To add to this: I buy ceremonial cacao every so often. There is a notorious cacao shortage. The cacao place I usually buy from only upped their prices by 5 bucks. Only (profanity) 5 bucks. How the (profanity) can a cacao place only raise their prices 5 bucks even with a cacao shortage and Cadbury is 5000 dollars a block now but Protein Powder is price gouged to high hell ?

Some of these have a noticeable amount of saturated fat, if you’re trying to look after your heart it’s best to be careful / take note. Turkey got me, I thought it was a healthy option but had more satty fats than I expected.

I don't think this advice is current with the more recent literature.

        • +2

Interesting, I’ll need to go back for another look. Cheers

    • Agree, plenty of food based options are available, but it's all subjective and needs to consider your circumstances. I train 10-11 times per week (gym, running and karate), without a good protein powder, I am noticeably more sore without it. I also start dropping size/weight, which is a problem with my slim frame.

Someone going to the gym 3 times per week and not pushing hard probably doesn't need to supplement ,a good diet should cover it.

  • better import WPI directly from china

    • +2

Is that the Mandarin word for melamine?

    • They import it from us so that they don't die when they eat it, so, that seems like a pretty big gamble.

  • I have been buying Protein powders (both local and international for 30 years. I would say prices have gone up for Multiple reasons.
A lot more demand for it in lots of different products not just protein powders as more people are into the health craze.
a lot of our dairy gets exported so less available for us.
Because some distributors / retailers know they can increase the price and make higher profits.

Other question is how much larger has the dairy industry gotten in regards to also populations. I remember back in the day AUS protein was way cheaper than US protein (after shipping / tax etc) but then it got to a point it was cheaper to import in US protein which was a joke and made no sense. Shame really as NZ and Aus dairy is some of the best in the world if not the best. I used to also buy the 20/25kg sacks of WPC / WPI direct from the dairy manufacturers. Even those prices skyrocketed.

Milk and other milk-based products haven't gone up as much. So I think there's a bit of price gouging testing to see what prices the consumer market will accept.

      • +1

I am sure there is since the health craze and a lot of people pay so much money for crap Protein products. The other companies see this and think Damn, if peopel are willing to pay that, why dont we increase our prices too.

  • Talking vegan powders only. To be honest it's all bullsh*#. Pure Product vegan is only 37$ and hasn't increased much so. Looking at past orders. Amino Z is steep and Bulk Nutrients is similar to Pure Product. Although I like Amino Z, it's too pricey. 55-60$ for 1kg vegan protein isn't budget friendly!

    I'll wait for deals… Inflation==Extortion 99% of the time!

    • As I've said below, buy the coles home brand pea protein. It is cheap and the protein content is pretty good.

I've noticed whey and WPI prices have gone up drastically since Albo became PM.

    • +1

Now I need to work out of you're serious or not.

      • Just look at price history of whey and WPI. Last 3 years inflation gainz have been enormous.

Looks like that's WPC. Op is after WPI.

      • +1

        100% whey is a blend.

  • +3

Equine supply stores sell whey powder at about $5-10 per kilo, if you have any horses looking to make sick gains. Just saying.

I haven't died of it yet, anyway.

    • +2

Same. Horse electrolytes is where it’s at.

My mane has never been so shiny.

    • +4

That has 13.3 grams of sugar (lactose) per serving with 40 servings per 1kg.

That's 532 grams of sugar in 1kg of skim milk powder.

It also only has 8.75g of protein per serving for 350g of protein per kilo. Skim milk powder has a protein content of 35%. WPI protein is usually around 90%+. Skim milk is also mostly casein protein, not whey protein.

WPI has much less sugar and much more protein. WPI is also more easily digestible than casein protein. They are definitely not "mostly the same stuff".

      • -1

        interesting thanks -

I googled 'skim milk powder vs wpi powder' and AI showed me what you said, plus

'Cost: WPI is generally more expensive than skim milk powder due to the higher processing involved

In summary: If you're looking for a high-protein powder with minimal lactose and faster digestion, WPI is the better choice. If you prefer a more natural, whole-milk protein source with some fat and lactose, skim milk powder might be a suitable option'

        • It's not a suitable option at all. It's more than 50% sugar!

Australian econ is cooked because of how we handled COVID. One of the many things we're doing to pay off that debt and interest.

  • -3

Protein supplements are basically a scam - most people are getting enough protein from their diet, or could easily add the right foods to make up the difference.

    • +1

Eat more skinless chicken and turkey

  • -1

Buy the coles home brand pea protein powder.

Well known to be high in protein for the amount used. Plus cheap and you get the added bonus of reducing your whey intake.

Bonus points if you just drink it with water. You gotta take your gains medicine straight.

    • Is this stocked in all Coles stores generally? I’ve tried to find it at the small one near me and wasn’t there.

I’m already on the pea protein so this with some cocoa would go well.

      • I'll let you look it up on their website and find it in stock near a place near you.

        • Their website doesn’t seem to easily show stock, if at all? Maybe I’m spoiled by Woolworth’s semi-decent website though.

Eat eggs. They are the easiest protein for your body to absorb. Better than dubious powder. Protein powder is merely residue waste from processing food

Another very cheap protein source is fish, particularly tuna it's very high in quality protein and very cheap per serving. Mix in some fatty fish like sardines as well.

    • Just beware mercury poisoning is a real thing.

  • guess no more amino for awhile ;( sadge

  • It has risen but you can sometimes find deals, Woolworths recently had sales on Musashi 100% whey $51/2kg. This is a WPC/WPI mix but mostly WPC.
The vanilla flavour is over 77% protein and tastes good. I think more poorly of the chocolate one, which is still OK. Look out for specials on this as it is often on special somewhere - chemist warehouse, Woolworths etc..

From a google search just now I couldn't find Musashi for a good deal but I did find this with 70% protein content it's a decent offer at $31.5/kg.

    Just eat a balanced diet.

  • Oh wow just saw this and checked. My protein matrix from BN was $33 each when buying 5kg or more and is now $38 each. I wish I purchased more on my last order now 🥲

  • -2

    Protein from food is superior.
    But powders have their place.
Don't cut corners. Pay for quality. You should not settle for anything less than WPI from grass-fed cows. Minimal thickeners/fillers/stabilisers.
The best value in Australia is still (1) True Protein WPI 90 or (2) Bulk Nutrients "raw" (unflavoured) WPI.
Yes they're expensive. But if you can't afford them, then don't bother with powder. Get your protein elsewhere.

    • +1

I don't get why you wouldn't bother with WPC when it's still 80% protein - much higher than I'm foods. Let's not be protein snobs.

      • -1

Actually, 80% protein is not higher than most lean protein sources. Once we get below 95% to 90% protein, there are "real food" alternative sources of protein which are superior to a protein powder from a nutritional standpoint. Then there are the gastrointestinal issues with WPCs; and the fact that almost all WPCs use a substantially higher number of thickeners and stabilisers in comparison to WPIs.

        • -1

Chicken breast which has one of the highest % of protein from lean protein sources is only 27% protein. WPI is typically 90%+

          • -2

@studentl0an: You're counting the weight of the water in the chicken breast 🤦‍♂️
Chicken breast is precisely 80% protein. 100g =22.5g protein, 0g carbs, 2.6g fat.
Which is precisely the point I'm making.

            • @bangiebargie: You wrote "lean protein sources" but now you're saying you meant freeze dried with 0% water content, and not a "lean protein source"?

Where are you getting freeze dried chicken breast for human consumption for cheaper than WPI?

        • Nutritionally in terms of vitamins and minerals perhaps, but most people get more than enough of those anyway. WPC can be very convenient. If someone has gastrointestinal issues from it that's different, I haven't experienced this. You can buy plain or flavoured.

          • @acersaurus: Sure, absolutely. There are times to prioritise convenience over optimal nutrition.
Still, there are very few WPC powders that don't have nasties. The ones that are decent, cost close to the price of WPI (like Mirrabooka; otherwise Bulk Nutrients).
I'm coming from the perspective of competitive bodybuilding and a PhD in nutrition. Not pulling this out of my ass.

  • Safe to say they have 'jacked' the prices….

    • You gotta do that to get swole profits

      • Investors are making big gainz

  • Can anyone vouch for STC Scientific protein on eBay? It's a blend of wpi,wpc and casein, but is only $92 for 3 kg. I can't find any info on the brand online so am sceptical.
