Not that I'd particularly recommend anything except the highest tier:

$4.70 AUD ($3 USD) (these are the "old" XCOM games)

    • X-COM: Apocalypse
    • X-COM: Enforcer
    • X-COM: Interceptor
    • X-COM: Terror from the Deep
    • X-COM: UFO Defense

$10.96 AUD ($7 USD) (aka the tier you don't buy)

    • The Bureau: XCOM Declassified
    • XCOM: Enemy Unknown
    • XCOM: Enemy Unknown: Slingshot DLC
    • XCOM: Enemy Within

    $15.66 AUD ($10 USD)

    • XCOM 2
    • XCOM 2: Alien Hunters
    • XCOM 2: Anarchy's Children
    • XCOM 2: Resistance Warrior Pack
    • XCOM 2: Shen's Last Gift
    • XCOM 2: War of the Chosen
    • XCOM 2: War of the Chosen - Tactical Legacy Pack
    • XCOM: Chimera Squad

The Bureau sucks but there's a respectable argument that XCOM: Enemy Unknown is better than XCOM 2. The latter has timers and seems intent on turning a sandbox squad simulator into some sort of stupid class-based thing with characters and special powers and all that nonsense. Of course both are but feeble, inbred descendants of the original UFO/X-COM, one of the greatest games ever made.

X-com 1 was so great, but I've still nfi how to play it without saving and loading during missions to ensure you don't get hit. Your crew get slaughtered or hit hard (not that it's consistent.. you never know if you're going to take no damage, or 80%-100% damage, but it's rarely anything in the 1%-79% range) and take months to recover

I play it without save scumming except for absolute wipe outs, on the basis that I have to invest heavily in recruiting a LOT of soldiers in the early days. Once you get to the heavy armour you can take a lot of punishment. I also recruit, say, 20 soldiers and immediately cull 8-10 who have shit stats for aim or bravery, makes a huge difference (you'd think X-COM's HR department would vet them for this but apparently it's left to the commander of the whole mission).

        • Even with power armour I find you never know if they'll take 0 damage or practically die from each hit

      • Basically: you need to level a lot of soldiers, not just a 4-6 superstars. You want to creep forwards and utilise overwatch to ensure you never activate more than one “pod” of enemies at a time.

The pod system is the biggest weakness of both new XCOMs imo. Either you get them one at a time and probably win comfortably, or you accidentally activate two pods at a time and get wiped out.

        • I'm talking about the actual original, not the remake.

But I fully agree with you. The system where you 'activate' groups of enemies is absolute garbage. One of the many good things about the original game is that it sets out to simulate the whole battlefield. The remakes work more like a board game, including the lack of free aim and the way that it calculates the chances of shots hitting and so on. It also does scummy stuff like dropping enemies in behind you in areas that you've cleared.

I played XCOM: Terror from the Deep when I was but a young boy and it was the first videogame that ever made me too stressed to play it. 10/10 would lose entire squad in one turn again.

I learnt not only to name the starting squad after my young kids who were watching me try out the first mission…

  • It’s been a long time since there has been a humble bundle worth buying.

  • I predominately played the original X-Com-UFO Defence (& a bit of Terror of the deep), which is truly a gem of a game.

I note it's not included in this bundle. What would everyone recommend trying that's closest to the original game, which I think you can't buy anymore.

They are included in 1st tier
To play these recommend using OpenXcom, can play UFO Defence or TFTD using it and it fixes the tech tree issues with TFTD

Thanks! I got caught off guard because the front cover is different for the original game. Used to be an alien and green from memory.

Well this just made my day. Thanks for the OpenXcom tip!

  • Very nice. Microprose and 2K are the guys that made proper XCOM games.
    See MHLoppy's old game list

Not many ice creams to choose from these days. Too many water based frozen treats instead. Bulla is my go to for ice cream retail therapy.

  • I already own X-COM 2 stuff, does anything think it's worth paying the $4.70 for Chimera Squad?
    Thanks!

Not really. I have all the new XCOMs, I just couldn't handle the groan inducing, sitcom happy-go-lucky dialogue, gave up after a handful of missions. I'd rather listen to Bradford anyday. But then again, I enjoyed the supervillain taunts in WOTC, so my opinion is probably invalid.

The actual combat is good though. Recommend you watch a YouTube playthrough.
