I think this is about $5-$8k more than it's worth.

    • +1

What's better for the same price?
      What's $8k cheaper that's this car's equal?

      • +3

I'd still say a BYD Atto3 would pip this in power, quality and fitout.

MG at the end of the day is still an MG - it is an EV MG which is good though.

          • +4

@sunnyc: Feel free to expand on your reasoning.

I have an LDV (SAIC Motors - same as MG) and it's a bit hit and miss regarding quality - although overall satisfied.
Work has a fleet of BYD Attos and they haven't missed a beat.

          • +6

@sunnyc: worse than an MG 😂

          • +1

@sunnyc: I test drove the MG4, MG ZS EV and the BYD Atto 3. I chose the BYD as the infotainment system was a lot more responsive, more reliable wireless charging and it is still a nice drive and good fit out.

BYD also has better battery tech.

            • -1

@sween64: I drove 30+ EV and I didn't wouldn't recommend a BYD and I also did a west coast up WA trip in a BYD Atto 3 and wouldn't buy one after that trip.

              • @sunnyc: Which EV would you buy in the market?

                • @sween64: for me I'm looking at a Deepal E07 for my next vehicle. and its also own multiple EV to make that decision

                  • @sunnyc: For $70,000. Got it. Spend more to get more. And have you test driven or owned any Deepals?

                    • +1

@sween64: drove it. really nice both deepals. Xpeng is good and all but I like the feel of the deepal

        • MG is bigger and RWD, I fail to see how it's a $5-$8k negative in terms of proposition V the BYD. Comes down to want and need.

        • +7

I find the BYD interior awful

        • The Atto 3 has torque steering due to the fwd nature. Same as the geely ex5.

      • +7

Geely EX5 Complete (the base model) seems to match the Essence 62kWh version. $7k cheaper.

        • Yep, 100%

        • Actually about $5k cheaper as Geely prices are not Driveaway. You also have to factor in servicing costs and warranty so it could be very close…

      • +1

Geely EX5 for starters at $7k cheaper.

    • +2

      10k across the board imho…
Apparently mg doesn't sell in China. Only in some western markets.

        • +14

MG is 100% Chinese - the days of MG being a European brand are long gone

          • @bauser99: Yes and they are now total rubbish. Loved by a certain type of person

        • +6

          European badge

No matter how you dress it up, its still a SAIC.

          • @ATangk: "still a SAIC"

            Yes, captain obvious.

            • +3

@Flutterby: You aren't fooling anyone that its an MG and that it sells better because its a European badge. BYD has a better reputation than MG in Europe.

              • +3

@ATangk: MG is a relative minnow compared with BYD in China sales wise and have good brand status for reliability too, I'd be more trusting of BYD personally.

                • @FXx: SAIC is a decent size, I wouldn't call them minor.

                  • -2

@Flutterby: To repeat - Relative to BYD, within China, brand for brand.

                    • @FXx: I don't follow the sale volume or market cap.

Google says below, oth brands sell similar number.

"In the Chinese automotive market, BYD has overtaken SAIC in terms of sales and market share, particularly in the electric vehicle (EV) segment. BYD's cumulative sales in the first 11 months of 2025 were 3.7573 million units, a 40% year-over-year increase, while SAIC's sales were 3.53 million units, a 19.48% year-over-year decrease. BYD's dominance in the EV market is further highlighted by its 35.5% market share in China in 2023, while SAIC had a 7.5% share."

                      • @Flutterby: I'm not talking about SAIC, YOU are.
I realise they own MG, but multiple other brands of varying reputation too. I suggest you pay more attention to my post.

                        • -2

@FXx: How do you different a MG to SAIC?

                          This is what google says

"MG, now owned by SAIC Motor, frequently rebadges vehicles from other SAIC-owned brands like Roewe and Maxus for international markets. This practice allows MG to expand its global footprint and offer a wider range of vehicles, including those not developed specifically for the MG brand."

                          https://www.drive.com.au/news/mg-ute-caught-on-camera/

Is this a SAIC, a LDV or MG?

                          • @Flutterby: Both LDV and MG utes say SAIC on the bottom left.

So the answer is all of the above.

                            • -3

@ATangk: "SAIC on the bottom left."

                              Cannot argue this.

  • +11

    125kW and 250Nm. A bit under powered for 1700kg.

    • +2

Geely EX5 160 kW/320 Nm is winning on this.

  • +8

    MG service is pretty terrible.

    • +6

Agree. No OTA updates and dealers are not updating the software during servicing unless major problems. Poor quality finishing and materials. AT least BYD cares for their brand MG will slash the price by 10k overnight to boost sales and stuff the car resell value. Made a mistake buying MG so just have to suck it up but will not recommend.

      • -2

Equally bad sales and service BYD and MG. Really these people get a salary for doing nothing.

    • -1

So are every other chinese manufacturer. I've not heard a single good experience of a chinese car when something went wrong.

      • I can happily share stories of excellent customer service and after sales service.
However can’t share when something went wrong as never had any issues.
Our company Tesla however has been in repairs multiple times and they are ass to deal with.

Deal would get more clicks if titled as Telsa model Y killer

  • -1

Don't forget to use Temu App to spin the wheel for further discount LOL

  • +13

Way overpriced for what it is - spend a little more and get a Geely EX5 instead

    • On paper yes, but it does have a few advantages over geely
      * arguably more established brand in AU
      * Rear wheel drive
      * less boring colours and looks

To me both are at least 5K more expensive than they should.

      • +2
        • arguably more established brand in AU

ehhh. they've established themselves as less-than-stellar… not sure if this should be an advantage.

  • +5

MG has a long history of dropping prices after all the 'suckers' have dried up at the higher price point. MG4, MG5 perfect examples

This car is aroud US$20,000 in China. That's less than AU$32,000
Lots of room to come down in price

    • +5

Don't worry there'll be heaps of people that'll say
"oh but import duties, transport, sellers margins"

In reality there's a tonne of fat in these

    • +1

This car is aroud US$20,000 in China.

So how much would this be if it's in USA ? $49K USD ? We got it cheap in Australia.

  • +5

Close friend got this MG and within 1.2 years the battery start showing charging capacity problem, after sales service was terrible.

    • +3

Hasn't been released yet. Do you mean the old ZS EV?

      • +2

Could be the old one, he own MG EV and share his experience when I asked him about his car.

        • +1

Has he resolved the battery charging capacity problem?

      • How does this compare to the ZS EV?

    • +1

Lmao, which dealership do you work for?

  • if this car would be 4.6m long then I will definitely considering buying it

    • +2

what if it was 4.595m long

      • +4

        Not acceptable

        • 4.605m long??

        • +1

But what if it was 4.595m long only on really cold days?

    • Wow I though it was 4.6m like the pseudo 7 seater suvs. Looks alot bigger than the atto 3 based on the pics

  • +1

They have 5 vehicles listed on their site as coming soon and 7 current models… going to be an interesting year!

If you value your brain, avoid right wing propagandas

      But of a generalisation bud.

Where's the evidence that people just die in Chinese cars?

      • -7

        • +2

          ?

          • +2

@Drakesy: His credibility was established with his dopey comment above re the ZS EV.

            • @jackspratt: Why was it dopey about his friends car having “battery charging capacity problem” after 1.2 years of driving?

        • +2

He says posting from his Chinese made phone.

        • +2

So by that it would include Tesla as well as it is fully made in China?

    • +10

I try to avoid all cars, as that's generally a good practice when driving.

    • -1

Yep, the petrol MG are speeding pancakes. Splat and you become cranberry sauce for your car pancake

  • +2

My 1yr old MG4 is still a joy to drive but agree with other comments about immediate and massive price drop. No compensation whatsoever. I know cars depreciate and i was happy if they at least gave 1 free service due to the massive price drop after less than 3 months but nope, they offered some stupid discount on future purchase. Absolute turn off. They need to learn how people lose trust and confidence in the brand. Don't jump in now. Just wait

    • I think people will start seeing EVs like they see tech purchases. I bought a TCL 98' TV, which cost me $4500. When it was released 10 months earlier, it was almost $9000.

At least with a 10-year warranty, you hope you won't have to replace your car for many years to come.

    • i was happy if they at least gave 1 free service

Serviced once every 2 years, so one free service every 2 years, unlike most (all) others.

I got mine in November last year and price had increased since then.

    • To be fair, no other car manufacturer is giving you anything of value if you buy a car on release, and then they drop the price. Same goes for any other "early adopter" purchase. It's the early adopter fee.
(unless you have a price protection thing on your credit card).

      • +1

Check out Zeekr, they offered 3-5 years of free service with their recent drop in Zeekr X . My next purchase is likely the 7X now

  • It sucks they only put the heated front seats in the essence version. They come standard in the Geely EX5

  • +2

Geely EX5 beats this car in almost every aspect except the RWD. Pay a tiny bit extra elsewhere and get so much more. Also, the $1199 rrp for 7kw single phase charger is crazy.

When they don’t sell, at least you’ll get one for $10k cheaper later this year when they need to meet sales quotas.

    • My understanding is, their ChargeHub is a smart charger with OCPP support. Such chargers start from $1000. The RRP looks to be within the market range.

  • +1

Another competitor is Russian Moskvich 3E

    • What are the chances that'll come to Australia with the current sanctions?

  • Damm i was 501 no free stuff for me :(

      • Eh!

        When did Hyundai become Japanese?

  • im not here for the deal just the comments

  • How much for the attachment that leaves a classic MG oil stain in your driveway?

  • The 64 kWh battery that the UK gets is NMC, and is tied to the higher output 170kw motor. Unfortunately, all Australian versions have LFP with 125kw motor, which is a bit anaemic. This might be the cheapest but also the weakest electric SUV in it’s class…
