What the heck, I'd have not expected Balatro to be free on any platform this early. I guess it doesn't sell as well on consoles compared to something more portable like a phone or laptop?

    • +3

Probably get people hooked, then they will go buy it on other platforms offering portability.

      • +1

unlikely, balatro is incredible but not having cross progression holds it back a little being a roguelike

        • Not true. I got it on PC and I wish I had got it on Android instead. I'm still considering it…

        • +2

You underestimate the number of massive fans who are happy to buy across multiple platforms despite lack of cross progression, epecially for indie games that are more affordable than AAA titles.

Slay the Spire is an good example of this.

          • @danzha: thats true, maybe I am underestimating. I just got balatro on early steam release and put 50 hours in, unlocking a lot of decks and achievements. I got the android version on release and had a few goes but it just felt like starting all over again and dropped it kinda quickly, others may feel differently though

      • Hmm, rings true to me. I bought it on PS4/PS5 digitally, then went and bought it on Switch - and I don't even own a Switch lol

    • So the game's popularity has definitely peaked (most of us have beaten it and moved on) and resultingly the comments about trying to get crossplatform buy-in are possibly true.

Bit I think it's more likely that he's now so rich that he's probably just interested in seeing the player numbers keep going up on the platform people are least likely to have bought it on.

The game was made by a solo dev and it's sold 500k units @ 35kAU equiv worldwide on PC and $10ish on mobile so it's probably moved close to $1b gross. Like even if he's lost 50% of that to agreements and all the usual people who get a taste when something becomes massive he's in no need of money.

Apparently it's sold 5m units. Assuming $20 per, that's $100m. Not to be sneezed at, but it's definitely not $1b.

      • Definitely doesn't need the cash that's true. But still, I'd expect this maybe next year when all the buzz and hype has fallen off

    • Technically speaking, it's under a PSN subscription. You have to keep paying for the subscription to play it.
Also, it has been available on Apple Arcade for quite some time already, which is also a subscription service.

    • lol art year I have that on pc with all the dlcs etc with it. massive download.

  • Lol everyone has probably bought balatro. Anyway it's a good month from a quality perspective.
I personally didn't think too highly of balatro but rogue likes aren't my thing. I can see why people would like this.

        rogue like = no thanks

        • +1

its rogue lite as in you just unlock new decks and cards. other than that its just a typical poker style game where you aim for a score and certain things give boosters and multipliers.

Crazy take. Literally game of the year for 2024 for many people.

Even if you don't like it surely you have some empathy/can understand that it's an amazing selection.

I'm keen for some Balatro. Boltgun looks fun. I'll give Ark a crack. But this is a long way from an amazing lineup IMO.

        • +1

Just Balatro by itself would make it an amazing lineup.

  • +3

Keen as for Boltgun. Love me a good old school shooter.

    • +1

It's fantastic, though it gets bloody tough.

  • Looking forward to trying out Boltgun. Also finally going to get on balatro train

  • This is about the perfect month. It's got two games that have always been in my "I'd try that if I didn't have to buy it" list (Ark, Boltgun), and one game that I wouldn't have picked up in the PS ecosystem. Hard to complain.

I dont get the hype behind balastro. I got to the end once. What is the incentive to keep on playing? Maybe I'm missing something.

    • The end is when you have a gold seal on all jokers, gold seal on all decks and all challenges completed.

Yeah I don’t get it either, gave it a couple of hours, it’s a big meh from me.
Slay The Spire is a goddamned masterpiece if you are wanting a card type game, recommend giving that a go, its on pc & Xbox game pass.

      • I bloody love Slay The Spire as well as Balatro.

STS has already been on PS+ a few years ago, so a lot of people probably have it already from that anyway.

    • -1

It's a good 5 hours of messing around, but yeah also not sure why people are so obsessed with it. I'd call it a $5 game, not however much I paid before refunding.

My PSN account is ending next month, found this which is 10% off using Ultimate gift cards from BigW
