I've been waiting for a cheaper price on this TerraMaster DAS, it's been sitting at $499 at many stores lately. Amazon have a limited time 20% off deal, making the price $399.99. Perfect for my plex storage needs, this will be hooked up to a mini PC. I discovered so many aspects to consider when researching storage solutions for my situation, but I came to the conclusion that a simple DAS was perfect for my needs.

3Camels also shows this as a great price. https://au.camelcamelcamel.com/product/B0BZHSK29B

  • What do u use it for

    • +2

Stores and connects a lot of hard drives to your PC. They're using it to store a load of movies, files, backups on mini PC. Has to be physically connected to another computer to work unlike a NAS.

      • -1

        Why not just get NAS?

Or build your own NAS from a PC?

        • +5

In my case a NAS was not needed, it will be plugged into a miniPC which essentially turns this into a NAS anyway. I looked at various NAS units but they were more expensive. I also looked at building my own NAS or DAS but it turned out unsuitable for my needs with the MiniPC I was using.

This is a hard drive enclosure for Direct attached storage, this model holds 6 drives and attaches by USB3.2 Gen2. Its suitable for users that need a large amount of storage space. In my use case I am looking to move my storage out of my desktop PC and plug this into a mini PC to cut down on power use. Also not having to leave my PC on 24/7 for server use will be a bonus.

      • -2

But you need to leave the mini pc and DAS on 24/7, so why not just use a NAS?

Do you take out all your hdds from main desktop pc and put it in the DAS?
        Does DAS support raid?

Also pc don’t need to be left on 24/7.
You can setup in bios to turn on at schedule time in morning
and have windows auto turn off when you go to bed

It seems you have your own unique use case, different from my situation. This will be left on 24/7 as I am not the only user. This DAS does not offer RAID, but I will be using softraid with parity. The MiniPC offers more computing power for the tasks I'll be running and very low power use compared to running a full PC PSU.

I looked at NAS solutions from companies like QNAP anf Synology but the price was much more expensive for my needs.

        • +1

some DAS supports raid (I have a QNAP which does), but this one does not.
I guess some may use it for truenas or such - where you want to add a lot of storage to another machine (possibly a small one - mini pc's offer pretty cheap and power efficient compute these days).

I personally use DAS for local photo storage, its accessible as a drive letter (yes i know you can do iscsi on NAS), easy to manage and sits there and fulfills its purpose with a minimum of fuss
I got it back when 10GB LAN wasnt really a thing

Gets backed up to my NAS ;)

you have some valid points also!

@Lonewolf1983: I'd prefer a DAS like this one over the QNAP you mentioned. It doesn't interpose a RAID controller or anything else between the host PC and the HDDs. Just let the host PC handle it with whatever Unraid, ZFS, Raid, etc. setup that they want. This TerraMaster D6-320 DAS passes the drives through perfectly for a DIY NAS setup.

I have concerns about running this as part of a storage pool, but if you're prepared to run your pool over USB-C, then this seems to be quite a well regarded DAS for that. A lot of USB-C DAS are trash. This is reportedly one of the good ones. https://forum.level1techs.com/t/usb-c-10gbs-enclosure-with-a…

@yak: Horses for courses, yes the lack of a raid controller can be a benefit if you're turning it into a NAS with a dedicated machine/OS, but a disadvantage when you just want to have some basic high volume redundant storage directly attached to your workstation.

              • @Lonewolf1983: Good point. I'm looking at a DAS as one part of a storage solution, and you're looking at it as the entire storage solution. High speed external storage with redundancy and near zero configuration or complexity required. Almost plug and play. I can see how that'd be appealing.

It just dropped to "Only 3 left in stock". Nearly gone.

                • +1

@yak: Yep, little qnap app to keep track of smart data, drive temps etc, automatic drive spin down when not in use
$330 so cheap (I have a brand new spare in the cupboard in case it dies - which is always a risk with hardware RAID). is only 5gb/s USB but again its sufficient for its usage.

In any case its backed up to my unraid NAS, then to cloud so its more just for speed of recovery in case of hardware failure as i use it daily.

                  • @Lonewolf1983: How are you storing your drives in your NAS? Do you have them in your NAS PC over SATA or is something fancier going on? Asking out of curiosity while I'm building my own NAS.

                    • +1

@yak: NAS is running unraid, just 8x disks + couple of SSD's for caching and VM's
Using onboard Sata ports + NVME to SATA adapter

  • Hi just wondering if anyone know if this will work with 2.5” WD 4tb hdd? I currently have 3 of these connected to my computer. Would like to find a better solution.

    • I'm sure the TerraMaster website product page would have this info.

    • +1

on this video around 1:40 he's fitting 2.5 inch ssd drive so I'm sure the wd one will fit. Be conscious that the 2.5 inch 4tb drives might be SMR so don't (software) raid 'em if so :)

  • Is it the same as this 8 bay HDD dock from orico that I've been using?

    https://www.orico.cc/usmobile/product/detail/id/3611

    • basically yes. it's just a JBOD enclosure (just a bunch of disks) with 2 less bays compared to yours.

  • Sold out

  • this could be a good alternative as a JBOD. 5 bay orico enclosure $142 on amazon.

for just a tad less you get 10bays instead of 6. downside could be the 2 usb cables and 2 powerpoints.

  • Do these type of DAS's show the disks up as 6 seperate entities? So you can do your own software raid? or does it automatically amalgamate them?

    • This model does work well with software RAID. But many other JBOD enclosures do not.

You have to research each one. Check if they work well in the ZFS, TrueNAS, or Unraid communities. Threads like this are good. https://forum.level1techs.com/t/usb-c-10gbs-enclosure-with-a…

    • I have the 4 bay version and can do software raid using Windows Storage Spaces, but was told it should work with Unraid as well
