For those paying in USD this is how you get the correct exchange rate in PayPal:

Setting overseas websites to AUD or letting PayPal do the currency conversion results in an inflated rate. To get the correct rate you need a card without international fees and do the following:

  • Set the website currency to USD
  • Checkout with PayPal
  • Select your card with no international fees
  • Click "See currency options"
  • Select USD to bill the card in USD instead of AUD
  • Proceed with checkout

Now you'll get the correct MasterCard or VISA exchange rate depending on the card.

Should offset the 17% GST rate AliExpress has been charging Australians recently.

    • That sounds very illegal. You can charge more, but you can’t pass it off as a higher “GST” charge.

        Better one???

  • "Sorry, this code is for specific items only"

on all 4 items from 4 different stores.

This is the 5th time nothing works for me. Why post codes that never works?

I think i'm done with aliexpress. fake coupons to try you get shop in hopes that you might buy something even if the coupons doesnt work. They just need to get your interest.

    • Let me guess. They're phones? They were last time when I said they're excluded.

      • yea, phone. $400+ phones and maybe some lenovo tablets are the only thing high quality that aliexpress sells in my opinion.

The rest are low quality stuff or counterfeit. I dont trust their ssd and hard drives.

If they sell high quality genuine brand ssd then i might buy it. But likely counterfeit.

for headphones, amazon have them beat on pricing/warranty and delivery speed.

        • Yeah so basically since that previous deal and all others that follow, the purchase of mobile phones will be excluded from the use of coupons. Why? Because when 3G was shutdown, carriers started disabling phones purchased from outside of Australia and from AliExpress' perspective they're going to lose a lot of money if people buy phones and request a refund when they don't work.

          • +1

@Clear: yea, i know its due to the telstra 3g shutdown. they should have straight up ban all phone sales to australia in that case.

but for me. i already have 3 phones bought from amaysim in last years 3g shutdown sale. I will only use aliexpress phones for gaming media consumption. wont even put a sim it it.

such a shame, they are losing my purchases. I buy $1500 - $2500 of phones every year from them.
I have a huge collection of xiaomi, oppo, oneplus, zte nubia, vivo, iqoo, realme phones in my cupboard.

I tried geekwills and Giztop. They cost two times more and charges delivery fee of $26 per phone.

            • +3

@deangalanoz: The whole 3G shutdown was beyond retarded, still can't believe they actually went through with it.

              • @Zilch: Ridiculous band-aid solution to a problem that was long known and the powers that be kept kicking the can down the road until it was far too late…

          • @Clear: I still dont get it, what does 3g have to do with phone, they are 4g and 5g phones and wont use 3g unless you are in really bad network coverage, why ban the whole phone. I am missing something

            • +1

@Cmaz: Basically 4 and 5G don't have dedicated voice channels, you establish a data connection and send voice over it, the manufacturers had to include a fallback to 3G for when you don't have a 4G signal, so some of them said "why bother building that fancy voice over data thing, we can just use 4/5G for data and always use 3G for voice even when we don't need to".

And then the 3G network was turned off and a bunch of phones that had seemed to Work properly in the past suddenly broke.

Providers are required by law to allow triple-0 calls from any device on their network, but there are now a bunch of not-entirely-4g devices on their network that can't make an emergency call. So the providers kicked them all off the network even if the phone may have been patched to make proper 4g calls, or was a data only device that was never going to make calls anyway.

It was all a big mess.

      • I'm having the same issue non-phone products (smart home zigbee devices).

        Any idea why?

        • Are they Big Save?

          • @Clear: I used the $6 off $49 coupon on my cart with one Big Save item, 2 non.
The coupons were shown on the product listing though.

          • @Clear: Worked a couple hours into the deal, weird.

  • do the coupons work on the bundle deals ?

      No

  • Would the Poco M7 Pro 5G work on the Vodafone network with the new 3g shutdown restrictions?

For the mor experienced AE buyers, are returns relatively straightforward / free? I have read what AE themselves say on their site but also see lots of negative commentary about it.

    • +1

If you have a legitimate reason for return and return an item within (I believe) a 14 day window upon receiving it, the process is fairly painless and straightforward, though you need to provide video or photographic evidence of the item not working to your expectations.

However if you bought an electronic or electric device that went kaput about 6 months later… Good luck. You'll probably get better results initiating a chargeback after some back-and-forth with customer service.

      • To add onto that, change of mind they'll likely make you pay for return postage over a return slip. Too many tried scamming it.

        • I guess it goes both ways, seller scamming buyers and vice versa 😅

        • Free returns for change of mind is high on my list, especially since this order includes some shoes. Thanks for the info guys.

    • I believe you can do up to 5 items per month for change of mind/no longer needed with free returns, but I've only done this with cheaper items. I've been able to do a return for faulty item that I've purchased more than a month ago, but you need to discuss it with the seller first before submitting the return request. Also I found that choice items are easier to return due to aliexpress customer service handles them instead of the seller themselves which make things easier.

    • If you've filed refunds against a scam product and report it, AliExpress will side with you if there's a legimate reason along with evidence. And I think it might depend on your previous track record too.

However if you miss the return window, you're SOL.

Personally I haven't been "scammed" for anything more than $10.

Anything that Ali did side with me didn't require any return (I'm sure the merchants cbf paying for all that extra postage and time just to receive broken items).

      • Also don't destroy any packaging, shipping bags etc until you are happy.

A couple of times I've received a completely wrong item, I remember at least one of those I had to submit photos of the weight of everything, packaging etc. Bit of a PITA and wasn't even an expensive item.

  • Anyone with experience with AE CPUs? Wanting to know warranty/returns process if anything goes wrong. Hoping to snag a 5700X if any pop up.

    • I ordered a 9800x3d from AE and another via Amazon Germany. AE arrived 2 days earlier and I ended up returning it via AusPost to a local shipping address. Received full refund in a week.

  • I thought I saw a coupon for over $1300 spend. Looks like it disappeared?

    • I haven't seen that. Only US$100 off US$799 with AEB799 and US$40 off US$349 with AE349B for Business customers.

      • Indeed, just used AE349B for USD$40 off successfully (Business). Good one as all the $459 codes are not available.

  • AUOZ80 AUMY80 AUAF80 used up, does anyone know if they add more uses to them as the sale progresses?

    • Didn't know the coupons were limited. Just saved me mate, thank you.

    • You will usually find the are restored after being exhausted. Check back later.

    • I just used one which had been scratched out

  • any N150 mini pc for proxmox/pfsense?

  • Just realised I am sometimes paying 18%+ GST on some orders …

Sometimes even worst … just placed a 48 USD order and paid 16 USD in GST for a total of 64 USD (buy more and save bundle free shipping no coupons) 10% for Australia and 15% extra for Aliexpress?

I've got thousands of orders, wonder how much I've been scammed over the years.

  • Anyone had a problem with Ali charging the wrong amount of GST (almost double) on Bundle orders?

Just did a bundle order $40 odd and was charged $9 GST. Chatbot is useless of course.

Seems to be okay on a non-bundle checkout.

[EDIT] - just seen the link and post above. This is obviously still going on.

Anyone getting this error when you add the coupon code?

"For security reasons your request can't currently be processed"

    • Have you created multiple accounts in the past to get "new user" deals?

      • I do have an account I use for business purposes and a different account I use for personal purposes.

I've read conflicting reports as to whether that could be the issue, or that the coupons themselves might have expired - which is what @Clear stated in a previous deal.

Tried my partners account, on a different computer and a mobile phone - and now she's been hit with the same notice too.

        Very frustrating.

  • Any recommendations for good webcam?

    • Invalid reason to neg a deal. If the deal is expired you report it as expired

    • +1

Been a member for 14 years. Never posted a single deal. Only made 179 comments. Votes down a deal because it's expired.

      🙄

      • And as usual no action from the mods. They said the codes are working………. so obviously it's an invalid neg.

        • Can you please quote my report reply in full, rather than misquoting?

We said that the codes are working for us, therefore it isn't a case of the deal being expired. They obviously aren't working for that user, for whatever reason. That is a user issue with the retailer and/or not something we would therefore revoke as per our guidelines.

          • @hamza23:

All those codes work here, but not for that user for some reason, not a case of expired. Will go down as issue with retailer and/or not something we revoke.

Based on that message to me I'd be inclined to say the vote is invalid because the reason provided (expired deals) is not true given the codes still work. Obviously we disagree on that and leads back to a deeper issue where negs will stay even if they're proven to be false.

What I suspect has really happened is that the codes expired overnight and AliExpress renewed them sometime after that comment.

I'm happy to share some thoughts in TWAM.

            • -1

@Clear: Neg voting is a complete mess in general.

On one hand the site seems to actively discourages posts getting lots of downvotes by:
              1. Making up voting a simple click.
              2. Requiring users to justify neg votes to provide justification.
              3. Allowing the community remove perfectly valid neg votes through arbitrary voting on a comment (that might not even be the comment where the neg is being justified).
              4. Banning users from having voting rights if too many votes are revoked by the community, even if all those neg votes were completely legitimate.

Then on the other hand, with some deals invalid negs are ignored.

              eg. for the rule

              “Agree”, “Same”, “Ditto”

              there's this.
              https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/16363349/redir

              or for this rule

“Not a bargain”, “What is this”

              https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/16315337/redir

              • @PainToad: Those votes from 2 months ago weren't ignored, they weren't reported by you or anyone, therefore we did not action them either way. I've revoked them now.

You are welcome to suggest alternative systems in the site discussion thread, note that point 3 is a system limitation in its current form. In regards to point 4, you cannot automatically deem a negative vote as legitimate as you feel it is, that is up to the community to decide as per the current system we have had in place for over a decade, once again you can suggest an alternate system. Point 1 and 2, 'seeming to discourage negative voting' is not something by design, you can 1 click negative vote too if you have commented, otherwise you obviously cannot as you must write a comment. The alternative to that is negative voting with justification/comment which would/did result in abuse. I.e. pre Feb 2008.

                • -1

                  @hamza23:

they weren't reported by you or anyone

Honestly I don't bother much anymore in "controversial" deals because reports seem to just sit there. I assume because of all the controversy in the posts, you guys get heaps of BS reports and stuff gets ignored. But maybe cleaning up once the dust settles is a good idea.

note that point 3 is a system limitation in its current form

I've raised this before. It's a pretty big limitation.

Also seems rather simple to solve.

When clicking the "-" a modal appears asking for a reason. That reason gets posted as a comment with a flag of vote-justification. Then only votes on that comment determine deal vote revoking.

you cannot automatically deem a negative vote as legitimate as you feel it is, that is up to the community to decide as per the current system we have had in place for over a decade, once again you can suggest an alternate system

How about if a positive vote gets downvoted, the up vote gets revoked? That way both positive and negative opinions are treated equally.

Point 1 and 2, 'seeming to discourage negative voting' is not something by design, you can 1 click negative vote too if you have commented, otherwise you obviously cannot as you must write a comment.

Likewise, to make positive and negative opinions equal, why not make people post a comment to up vote a deal? Yes that will have the comment section more noisy, but if it's okay for negative votes, why not for positive? If the site is not favouring negative or positive there should be no expectation that one type of vote will have more or less than the other.

Btw, there's still other invalid negs in those deals.

                  • @PainToad:

But maybe cleaning up once the dust settles is a good idea.

Sometimes we do clean up, but it takes a long time as not only do you have to read every comment but you have to open their profile in a new tab and then view all the other comments, you can't assume that one comment is the only one they have made. It's probably not a good use of time for deals with 100s of votes and comments. Other times we probably would just not think of it.

That reason gets posted as a comment with a flag of vote-justification.

Alright I'll raise it again with the others and see what they think. I know it sounds simple in theory, but from what I understand, the way our database is designed it would require a complete rehaul, and no it isn't impossible but it is a question of time/resources vs benefit of fixing odd occasions when the wrong comment gets used to revoke a vote. We don't have a whole team of developers but I'll put it on the radar.

why not make people post a comment to up vote a deal?

                    • 'Bad Deal' Inappropriate negative vote.
                    • 'Good deal' Inappropriate positive vote.
                      :P

I think it is fair to + vote good deals without explanation, it would fill the comments with pointless comments for the sake of + voting, but for something wrong with a deal you should provide a simple explanation. Making that change might do what you describe with making votes more equal, but it would break a lot more than it would fix.

                    • -1

                      @hamza23:

That's fair. Would be a nightmare. Another reason to have one comment be the neg reason :)

Alright I'll raise it again with the others and see what they think.

                      Cheers

(despite it also being marked out in the description).

I found it by checking the coupon banner on the ali homepage..
they prob re-upped some codes, and i assume(hope) they only show actives on the banner.

  • Thanks OP 👍

  • Has anyone had any luck with stores that cancel your order, but continue selling the same identical item (at a now higher price)?

I ordered a $180 item which appeared to be on a stores page as slightly discounted (down from ~$200), and then used a coupon from here.

Order went through, but unlike all the other items (right after it using a different coupon), this store is stuck at "preparing package" - which is the first automated reply step.

But I get the feeling that the store has realised they had it slightly discounted, and then also forgot to price jack for the sale, and will cancel it.

I've had this happen before on a cheaper item, despite it still being available for purchase on the same store (as is this current item).

Given its 3 days now, I just attempted to speak to "the store rep" (which I think is just a random Aliexpress customer support), and the entire conversation was filled with pleasantries and non-sensical statements.

So no further clarity there - and to due the complicate matters, the other purchases were all for this item (it's an RC place) and those parts are useless without it (ie a reciever, flight controller etc)

Maybe I have too little faith in aliexpress but I reckon I can see what's coming..

    • These coupons are funded by AliExpress, so the seller doesn't lose any money unlike eBay where it's mostly seller funded. When it comes to cashback that's the only part the store needs to pay and it's only ever between 1-10% and they can choose how much.

What's the feedback rating on the store? Choice or non Choice item?

      • Choice, 93.4%, 3000+ in 90 days it says

    • Sometimes it just takes a while before they ship your item, possibly a stock or staff issue. Keep an eye out for seller msgs, they might ask you to cancel the order. My experience re them asking you to cancel, which they do to avoid cancelling it themselves and impacting their rating, if you cancel then you get your money back. If you don't cancel, you risk it being marked as shipped, they give it someone else's tracking no, you wait a few weeks, eventually dispute, then get a refund. Having had a few of these, I usually just cancel, then look elsewhere

    • I've noticed a few things where I put stuff in a cart getting ready to ensure everything goes over the minimum price for free shipping. And then just as I press ck out I get logged out and then when I log back in all the prices in the cart have increased. I don't know what the **** is going on from 50 cents to a few dollars increase on $10 items.

  • None are working for me after creating a big cart :(
