    • Realistically, what is the best price you could get for a Gibson version?

      • +2

        $2000 new. $1K s/h.

        • +1

Those prices are not that close

The Gibson SG is around $3000-$3500 brand new
The Gibson SG Special is $2000-$3000
The Gibson SG Tommy Iommi Signature $3500 - $4000

Second hand Gibson SGs (not the special) usually are between $2000-$2500 second hand

          • @redbeard42: they were selling SG Gibson for 2000 on ozbargain. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/674742

there fbmp SG bigson for 1k

            • @ilove: Fair enough, but old mate ask for “realistically”. But that’s not an apples to apples - it’s an SG batwing guard- the one in the post is a Tommy Iommi SG special l. Signatures from Gibson are always ridiculously over priced.

That $2K SG was a buy now deal :)

If you’re going into a shop to buy this, good luck getting one near $2000 new. If you’re willing to wait until EOFY then I’d assume you could get some deals.

@ilove: That was in '21, they've significantly increased their prices since then. Epiphones have moved into the space that Gibson used to occupy and Gibson's moved to the moon.

    • Thanks - bought one yesterday! Been looking for something with P90s, should be good fun!

      • The 1071 price one?

        • +1

          Yup

          • @cafeman: the ONLY thing I don't like about is the Indian Laurel material for the fretboard…

            • @ilove: Yeah, I know what you mean. I debated waiting for the Inspired by Gibson Custom 2025 models they've just released in the UK with rosewood fingerboards but I'm betting they'll be anywhere from $2,200 to $2,800 localised, maybe $1,800-$2,200 on sale in six months if there's any stock left. That's too big a difference for my blood given where I am as a player! Admittedly, they're basically Gibsons at this point, but still …

              • @cafeman: how is it?

                • @ilove: It's really awesome, I love playing it. G string specifically is struggling to stay in tune but I think that's more to do with the bends I can do on it rather than the tuners - it's been getting progressively better at staying in tune the more I play it. The bridge location plus the shorter scale length means bends are frighteningly easy to do so I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt given new strings. Honestly, I can't fault it in the slightest - the P90s are excellent, the fretboard is great, action is well-set from the factory, and intonation was almost perfect except for one string that was fractionally out. Neck dive isn't an issue either due to the screw location. Overall I'm ecstatic with it, really really happy with it as a complement to my Strat HSS.

I also see they've launched the new Inspired by Gibsons; I was in the right range but slightly under. If headstock is important or money is loose I'd consider of those, but if I'm purely looking at it how it plays and sounds, this one's a huge bargain. I'm sure they're great for $2.8k but that's a crazy jump given the quality of this one. Given I've got an HSS already, there's no way I'd spend that much unless I had a 1m+ streaming base or I'd signed a decent contract; I'd sooner buy the one here.

                  • @cafeman: i played mine yesterday and was really happy with it. plan to get another one. at $971 with ebay plus…

    Far out, epi's got expensive

  • RRP of $2499 for an Epi? Really? Initially I thought it was a Gibson. Would have jumped on it…

  • $799 USD Retail when released

  • +1

Epi is now the price gibson was and gibson is just stupid prices. I've always wanted a gibson SG but there are so many better guitars available, they just dont have the name on the headstock!

    • I have a couple of LTD vipers but even their previously $500ish model is now just a bit shy of a grand.

    • "gibson was and gibson is just stupid prices"

Flying V Voodoo was at this price point… some years back…

M… goes for over $4k these days. inflation is real… https://www.bettermusic.com.au/gibson-80s-flying-v-w-case-eb…

      • inflation is real…

It sure is. I hear a lot of people complaining about (and rightly so) but very rarely do I see them asking how it happens. If you ask this question then you might change your voting patterns…

    • This comment is under-rated. Learn how to check over and do basic setup on a guitar, get a cheap modelling amp and you can take the right cheap instrument and make it suitable for most practice and performance. Use to want to get a brand name guitar. Now that they're this overpriced for even a basic guitar with mediocre components and quality control, and I'm very turned off.

Paying more than 1k for an Epiphone makes me Paranoid

  • +1

    Any fender fans in here?

    • Yes

    • My first acoustic was a Fender.

    • We all ran to squire. Better quality.

  • Mmm thinking I should've picked up that SG when I was in Japan. Didn't realise that bloody Epiphone was this much in Australia.

    • +1

It’s a signature model - it was stupidly priced at launch for what it is. If you’re happy to drop the case, thicker neck, wrap-around bridge, better tuners, and better quality caps you can get an equivalent in blue for $899. I think it didn’t sell well because the price was too high at launch, hence there's still stock kicking around.

At the current price it’s actually good value, assuming you’re looking for an SG with P90 pickups and want a case. It’s closer to an Inspired by Gibson model than a standard Epiphone, even though it didn’t carry the branding - it shares the same electronics and bridge dimensions (ignoring the fretboard), and the Epiphone P90 Pros are just barely "less" than the Gibson equivalents. It also has a different body construction to the standard Epiphone (two piece). There’s only a hair’s difference between it and the Gibson equivalent (which goes for around $4k) assuming you're looking at performance and not the headstock.

  • Bought my ESP LTD KH-DC for $500USD back in 2016, it's just sitting in the case. I wonder how much I could get for it?
