  • Hi, how many ram slots available/in use?

    • +2

This being the S model, I believe it has one soldered and one free. The seller is going to have to let you know if that slot is free though or if its the most likely configuration os 8+8.

      • Hi,

        Thanks for your enquiry.

The Lenovo ThinkPad T480s has 1 RAM slot, 8GB is soldered onto the motherboard with 8GB in the slot.

  • What are peoples experiences with refurbished laptops? I need to buy multiple units for a low tech application for a NFP club and this would reduce the cost substantially.

    • Depending on budget, you could always grab a couple as spares for peace of mind…

    • +2

Really good, I always buy A quality condition, they usually look and run like brand new.

Really nice being so cheap, aren't as upset if it gets damaged/stolen/lost, if you aren't gaming they can do all basic stuff (even some 2D indie gaming). Way faster and better experience than Chromebook or cheap tablet.

      • Is this deal an A quality?

        • +1

I guess it would be B, they use a different scale of Excellent (A), Very Good (B), etc. and this one is listed as Very Good.

        • They are marked as "Very Good", which typically corresponds to A-grade condition — clean and fully functional with only minor signs of use.

"Excellent" usually refers to items in like-new condition, with little to no visible wear.

          Thank you

    • Very good. Have bought 3, + a Dell micro PC, and wouldn't look anywhere else.

      Great value for money.

    • its probably the laptop battery that will cause an issue

    • I bought this exact model from a refurbisher a few years ago, it's a pretty solid machine and I had no issues with it.

    • I got one off eBay once. It was meant to be A quality, but it came dirty and smelling weird. It was fine after a cleanup, but the fingerprint scanner stopped working, and the BIOS battery died.

      I could live with it.

Just don't expect even A quality devices as good as "opened, brand new".

I bought a ThinkPad T480s about 2–3 years ago for around $400. It came with 16GB of RAM, the i7 variant, a touchscreen, and was in A-grade condition. It’s been fantastic—surprisingly, the battery is still at 96% health.

If you get one, make sure to update the Thunderbolt controller firmware (for the two charging ports on the left). Older firmware versions can cause the ports to fail over time.

I bought a second-hand T480s from Metrocom.au about 6 months ago. Its replacing my previous T430s i7, maxed out RAM and SSD(which I gave to my dad). The T430 worked fine for me except the battery would only last 30 minutes.

The T480s is NOT noticeably snappier in my use case (just use browsing and light media consumption and Office software, retro gaming). This baffled me. But turns out the T430s was the last of s series that had full power CPUs. All the new ones apparently have low power version CPUs So that T430s from 2015 felt as fast as T480s in 2025.

Another thing is Battery Drain when TURNED OFF! After doing a Shut Down, and leaving it unplugged overnight its usually flat the next day. I saw many ppl online having the same issue with ThinkPad and none of the tweaks suggested have solved the issue for me.

      Device name T480s
      Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-8350U CPU @ 1.70GHz 1.90 GHz
Installed RAM 24.0 GB (23.8 GB usable)
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Pen and touch Touch support with 10 touch points

    Meh

  • I cannot see if it has a sim card slot.

  • Can this have 3 screens - HDMI and USB-C? And is RAM upgradeable?

    • Use Display Port monitors & daisy chain them or get a dock e multiple display connectors.
RAM: as above answe: one slot solder + one free

      • Thanks! Re multi monitors, doesn't this rely on USB-C port supporting DisplayPort?

        • +1

The answer from LEE is partially incorrect, t480s USBC doesn't support daisy chaining as it is limited to only one channel. I tried for long then realised it is widely reported check Reddit for more.

You can try docking but that's not cost effective I would rather buy a 10th Gen for $4-500 when on sale.

And, using both HDMI and USBC is not that straightforward, I have a 27inch 4k and 24inch 2k, t480s can only run them at 30hz which is barely useable. Some people report that they could only get one monitor to light up.

RAM is upgradeable, very likely OP's is 8g solded and 8g in the slot, so you can replace it with a 16GB to make it 8+16=24GB. I have seem some models have 4GB solderd so be careful if you are buying any 8GB in total as it is likely to be 4+4.

  • Isn't this better at $200 with ebay plus? https://ebay.us/m/UPkDAP

    • No bec it is 3 months warranty only and is Refurb B Grade- DESCERIPTION AS , issue is a BIOS password lock. It comes with a 3-month warranty for peace of mind. Sold as-is with BIOS lock as the only noted issue.

      • Doesn't look like there's any simple to remove the bios lock,I do wonder if there's a method to do it by shorting vias like on some other models.
I wouldn't buy one without a way to unlock, because it seems if the cmos battery were to die you'd be locked out of the system until the date settings are changed in bios

    • If you ignore the BIOS lock then its good. No easy ways to remove the lock unfortunately.

For a price point comparison, I bought this system (t480s, with same specs) off a different seller on eBay in June last year for $250 (before discounts, coupons, etc.). Solid system!
As an FYI, if you stack a few of them in a pile the top one will fail to turn on as its hall sensor will think the lid is shut (detecting the laptop below). Ask me how I know :)

    • +1

MacBook Airs do that too. Ask me how I know :)

  • This good for gaming?

    • +1

Up to what games are you looking at, for Minesweeper and Pinball? Yes, absolutely.

To anyone buying this laptop, existing laptop or have an 8th gen, to install throttlestop.
After downloading, there is a guide for plug in & battery profiles.

I've an 8250U, that does bottleneck itself because it runs too hot and prematurely dies on low'ish battery when CPU load is high.
I've checked with HWInfo, and its a lot less now.

    Hope it helps someone too

    • Cheers for the info. I have ordered the laptop. Will look into installing the software when I receive it.

  • Does anyone know the exact model? Trying to find out the weight as these suppose to range from 1.3 to 2.5kg

Also battery info would be nice

    • Where do you get your information? As far I I know all T480s weigh pretty much the same, I'm absolutely confident they don't differ by a full kg. There is no room to hide that much extra weight in them.

      • +1

Couldnt find info online, so was reading reviews. PCMag had weight as 2.49 in the table, some others were showing 1.3-ish. Just went back to PCMag and read the text they actualy use lbs not kg, which was not shown in the table 🤦‍♂️😅

Apparently this one is 1.49kg and 58W battery, from the seller.

  • I'm liking the T480s so far, it seems quite rugged and the keyboard feels nice.
Laptop arrived well packaged, and was very clean, including a seemingly new Lenovo USB C 65W power brick. Casing has a little wear, but nothing too bad. Battery life seems good and overall no issues to report.
Successfully installed macOS Ventura with the following EFI: https://github.com/Lost-Entrepreneur439/thinkpad-t480s-hacki… (I couldn't get Sonoma install to complete, maybe because the config is out of date now?)
