  • Oooop! Beat my post by 7 minutes! Bought this

It was $75 delivered to inner west Sydney for me

  • Looks nice, Does it have one of those discs at the bottom of the kettle that makes it quiet?

  • +1

Hardly normal have it at $74, which is probably who they're price matching.

I got this for $42 a few months ago. The lid gets stuck 60% of the time. You need to modify the lid locking mechanism. Also not a 1 hand kettle when refilling.

  • I have this. Sometimes steam escapes from the grove of the lid.

    • How?

      • +4

Physics: water heats up, changes into steam, pressure increases and then escapes when lid is not sealed properly.

        • +5

          Sounds like Chernobyl

I have had a ton of issues with branded kettles from Breville, Morphy Richards, Kenwood, etc. Mostly lid related. I couldn't be bothered with those anymore so bought a glass K-Mart thermostatic kettle for $59. It's been going strong for many years. Highly recommend.

      69 now

        thats what she said

      • +7

Jeez, at least ask him out to dinner first

      • Inflation…..

      • Giggity

    • Is there plastic bit under the lid?

      • Yes, but the lid have never jammed or failed to open.

        • Thx, Im more concerned about micro plastic than jammed lid…

  • is this more energy efficient compared to the kmart $7.50 kettle?

    • +4

No, they are all pretty much the same. They heat by the resistance of running power throughout an electric coil which is incredibly wasteful and inefficient, but is fine for short use things.

A household socket maxes out at 2400 watts most of these are like 2000 watts.

Space heaters work same way and will bankrupt you through electric bill. Heat pump systems are several factors more efficient like your fridge or reverse cycle A/C that work by compressing gas.

    • +4

They're all roughly around 100% efficient in turning electricity into heat. The laws of physics are making that decision.

What you're paying for is looks, longevity, plastic exposure to the water (boiling water + plastic = microplastic fun) and features. Better insulation would help against some heat being transferred into the air or materials of the kettle itself, but likely not enough to ever really matter.

    • how safe are these $7.50 plastic kettles?

      • We've had heaps of them over the years. Never had any issues.

      • they leech microplastics apparently so probably not that safe.

    • Yes they are if you need hot water later on as the double wall insulates the water so the second time boiling will use less energy.

  • +4

There's too much happening with this kettle. Something will break and it'll be in the landfill because no replaceable parts.

Give me a quality built kettle with simple on and off.

    • +1

You would think not much could go wrong with a simple heating element but none of my kettles seem to last very long.

Currently using the cheap plastic kmart one until someone builds something more reliable.

How does this compare to Xiaomi?

    • +2

Most Chinese appliances, including hair dryers and kettles, max out at 1600 Watts. This causes them to be slower to use.

      • Good pick up on the wattage diff. The new Xiaomi kettle comes with precise temp controller while this one comes with 6 temp preset. And similar price. Decision making time…

Also, love the Xiaomi hot water dispenser and portable heating cup. All wanted lol.

        • I Bought the Xiaomi about a month ago, Quite happy with it so far although i don't really have any previous "high end" kettles to compare to.

Also has an app though i don't use it personally.

  • Thanks, got it!

bought this from the last goodguys post. A consistent issue i had was about one in five times when boiling, the kettle will shut off when it reaches 35 - 40 degrees. There is an audible click when it happens. I have to go restart the boil again. Not sure if its a rare single defective unit or not.

    • +1

I had some very similar issues with my Xiaomi 2 pro, must be the controls issue. I prefer kettles without temp control now, never used temp control once!

    • This issue is noted a few times in HN reviews, as well as leaking and annoying lid.

    • I also bought one in the last deal and can confirm that my unit does the same in terms of stopping between 35-40 degree every so often.

      • I have the same issue. I am thinking of returning it unless someone has found a solution to it. Thanks.

$44 on amazon for the 5000 series and free prime delivery.

  • Bought the Russell Hobbs Quiet Kettle and have never looked back.

  • The glass kettle at Kmart is surely better. June been using it for years, works great.

    https://www.kmart.com.au/product/1.5l-clear-variable-tempera…

    • One review there says it’s plastic now? Description says “ polycarbonate-wrapped glass housing”. Not sure what that means.

      • -3

polycarbonate-wrapped glass housing”. Not sure what that means.

It means that the kettle is made from polycarbonate wrapped glass housing

  • I have a xiao mi one. 2 buttons and can be operated via app for setting temperature and automation. Apart from the stainless turning brown it’s been fine.

    • When did the stainless start turning brown? i bought mine about a month ago, wouldn't really like that.

  • I bought this last time. It has been reliable and it is nice to be able to set the temperature. It doesn't pour very well though, easy to spill hot water. Overall it is ok but I wonder at the reliability of the electronic touch senser on the handle which you need to turn it on and off

  • Can i use this for soft boiled eggs at 60c

    • +1

Good idea, could you also sous vide steak?
