switch emulator and steam deck is all I need :D

      • For new Switch 2 titles? Does this already pre-emptively exist!?

        • +2

not yet but they are working on it. you can run all other normal switch games though

          • @kungfuman: Good luck getting Switch 2 games to run on the SD via emulator. You can get original Switch games working on there but many of them are buggy, have poor performance and battery drain, and require a lot of messing around.

            • -1

              @Dr PhilGood: i have a 1tb steam deck i would't be running it on a sd card…

  • +6

I m pretty sure it will be under $700 soon

    • -5

Consoles have gone up everywhere, I doubt this will get cheaper. If anything prices will increase thanks to Trump.

      • Businesses in Australia are not doing well across all sectors. If people don't buy then Manufacturer -> suppliers -> retailers have to reduce the price.

      • +13

Trumps tariffs could actually lower prices in Australia.

Less Americans buying goods (due to high prices imposed by tariffs) means companies looking to other markets to offload their supplies. Supply increases, so prices drop.

        • +13

Not likely for consoles. Sony has already led the way with spreading the tariff cost across all markets in order to protect their US market. Nintendo may have already mentioned it.

          • +2

@Elyxar: Not saying youre wrong but Sony increased their prices just one week after the tariffs went into effect. Youd be silly to think that those increases werent already in the pipeline. The tariffs just gave them a good excuse to roll them out earlier

        • +5

Yeah, nah. They're gonna shield the American market and western EU + AU + NZ are gonna pay the price.

        • +1

Sure, maybe for somethings but definitely not gaming consoles. Take a look at what all 3 are doing. Trump supporters out in force today too 😂 (not saying you are btw)

          • @nomoneynoproblems: Xbox and PlayStation prices have increased globally since the tariff announcements. Last time I checked, they are both gaming consoles.

            • +1

@WhyThingsCostMoney: Brain fart. Don’t know why I said not. Let me iterate. All 3 have raised prices due to the tariffs that Trump has imposed.

        • +3

It also has the potential to increase prices in Australia.

such as getting other countries to eat the additional cost so that they can lower it in America.

additionally many companies will use the tariff's as an excuse to just increase their price globally, i bet that if the tariffs are completely removed the product will not revert back to its pre-tariff pricing. Microsoft and sony have already done this with the xbox and playstation.

        • +1

I would like to see Australia start to make there own sh1t again and manufacture stuff here

      • +3

Correct - companies have said that other markets/countries will pay higher prices, this will reduce the impact of the tariffs on the US market.
No sure why you are being downvoted.

    • It is seeming like it won't be out of stock, Nintendo must be making many millions of units.

    • +9

I doubt it. Nintendo is doing very well financially and pre orders have sold out in basically every country except NZ/AUS. The original switch is stil at its launch msrp and barely ever went on discount. Maybe they’ll do a Black Friday deal and bundle a 3rd party game you don’t care about. Unless you’re waiting for a special edition may as well get it now. Also the PS5 and Xbox consoles have gone up over time, with the state of the world you may be waiting a long time before you see a decent sale. I pre ordered with 10% discounted gift cards and going to the midnight release. A new Nintendo system is like a once every 10 year event and I’m not gonna miss out.

      • +5

        this guy gets it

      • +1

Yep. The fact that (almost) every EB Games is doing a midnight launch for the first time in how long should be telling. People want to get their hands on this console. The people that are mad about the prices apparently haven't bought brand new games in a decade and I don't think they were the buyers to begin with.

  • +3

how about buy some 10% off GC from supermarket, and buy from JB for $692

    • Yeah would have been even better with the perks discount. All depends on how much time people want to invest

      • +1

No perks on concole. And the GC deal is over now.

        • +2

there is 20x points in a few days @ woolies to get ~ $70 back in everyday reward dollars

    • +2

Man I wish you could buy big denominations and not have to take 14 giftcards to do it.

      • From my memory they let you put in as many gift cards as you like when you order online, but that was a couple years ago when I last tried. No price match this way though

        • +1

I think you can ask for price match via live chat, and they will send you a custom link to make your purchase online with the new price.

    • I did this :)

  • +5

Or open a free Macquarie Bank account and get 7% off EB gift cards. Ends up $716.05. You can buy variable load gift cards. Quick and easy. And pickup on the day via C&C

    • Max value of an EB Gift card via Macquarie is $500, and you can't use multiple gift cards to purchase from EB online.

      • +3

You can pay the balance with gift cards instore on pickup on release day. You just need $50 deposit right now to secure the preorder.

      • +2

You only pay a $50 deposit and pay the rest in store. I preordered ours using 10% off gift cards from woolies or coles.

    • is this the best way to get discounted EB gift cards atm? I'm lazy and would love to get some without dealing with another bank.

  • +8

    overpriced AF….

    • +3

Yep. That $770 price should have been $550.

    • +1

Blame Trump.. or Albo.. or Dan Andrews.. or Biden… or John Howard… I can't keep up

    • -7

After this you gotta shell out $120 for games. Absolute greed at this point. I'm voting with my wallet (and with a mid spec PC to sail the high seas. Yarrr)

      • -6

And how much did your mid spec PC cost you?

        Easily $3k in this economy.

        • +6

Where did you get 3k from??? Plenty of sub 1k PCs posted very often on OzB.

        • +2

Like $1300 seven years ago. Runs switch 1 games fine. It's a mobile console after all.

      • +3

Might wanna read the site rules about using neg to protest champ.

        • +1

          Good point. And thanks.

      • +2

Yeah I get it. But part of my sorry old man ass remembers that consoles and games were always expensive vs living. Anyone price index that for reality?

        • +2

Probably cheaper. But way bigger market share, (sales) which is why prices were dropping against inflation for a long time.
Switch 1 has been super profitable, and games are max $89 RRP. That's a 35% hike!

      • -3

I hope life gets better for you so that a $120 game does seem like the end of the world!

        • +1

Sometimes it has less to do with ones financial situation and more about a company just straight up coughing you. I mean you accept this price then where to next? If you don't like what you see, then easiest method of protest is to not buy. Will it make a diff? Who knows but I'm not really that interested in switch 2 at this point and certainly can't justify those game costs. Let those with FOMO have at it.

      • +5

Compare console and game prices in the 90s with on inflation to now. You will find prices are typically lower now than they were.

The last Switch was somewhat of an outlier in having a low price. It’s changed our expectations a bit, which is why the Switch 2 feels expensive, even though it isn’t by historical standards.

        • +1

Hard agree. I remember the price of some snes games in Europe being over $100 at the time. So like… $200+ now.

But it was a small market, and its growth was the reason for prices dropping. The switch, while probably the cheapest when taking into account inflation, still brought them record profits.

$120 for a game is 20% higher than ps5 and Xbox. And 35% than switch 1.

Then again, flour is up like 40% from pre covid. So maybe I need to get used to this new reality.

        • +1

These price comparison with the 90s post are getting old. The market was way smaller, costs of producing carts much higher. With the sheet volume of each product they produce prices are inevitably lower. Not to mention the meat fact that components are significantly cheaper now than they were. People have to stop using the 90s as their excuse to justify these prices. These price hikes are pure and simple greed because Nintendo knows the majority of buyer will pay which is kinda sad.

          • +1

@hazzad: Well should we look to the 2000's then? The PS3 launched at $999 ($1575 adjusted for inflation) in Australia. The Xbox 360 launched at $500 ($788 adjusted for inflation) for the core version, and $650 ($1025 adjusted for inflation) for the hard drive version.

In fact the Wii launched at a pretty line-ball adjusted for inflation price of ~$650. So a $50 increase in real terms between the Wii and the Switch 2.

You mentioned the hardware (e.g. carts) being cheaper now - and I agree. But development costs of games themselves is astronomically higher now. The cost to produce something like Mario Kart World would be insane compared to OG Mario Kart on the SNES.

      • +1

Piracy is not 'voting with your wallet'. Its piracy…

    • +2

It’s even worse in the US.

Our price works out to be around US$400 + GST.

The US price is US$450 + tax.

So even though the price is high, others are being shafted worse.

    • YOLO

      • the buy 5090….

  • +4

I'll buy one once it gets cracked

    • +22

If you're sure it'll be cracked (as am I), best to buy a launch version and keep it on original firmware, if you want the best chance of implementing the easiest crack.

      • But if cant i will be selling at lost :(

    • I'm going to chip my OLED, get Switch 2, and enjoy back catalogue on the OLED. I also have a modded OG but I couldn't get into it with the old display, OLED is enough to excite me I think.

      • Where do you go to get it chipped? Shit looks too hard to do yourself…

  • cant reuse the code, pretty pissed. oh well

    • Is it once per customer?

      • +1

        yea

  • Hldt for an LE

[Pre Order] Nintendo Switch 2 Console $629.99
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/900381

Not long ago it was cheaper… wow.. looks like Nintendo is subsidizing the US market by spreading the import tax's to the whole world. PS5 and Xbox are doing the same.

They should have just increased the cost in the US only. Why should we pay for who Americans vote for.

    • +6

Yeah pretty sure sanity is not Nintendo. The console price was announced pre tariff and hasnt changed price since here. Sony and Microsoft on the other hand……

      • +2

Nintendo along with Sony and Microsoft have announced that the cost is going up in Australia. 100% its to subsidize the US market. They don't want to alienate their future customers for when someone else in President and remove all import taxes. The US market for consoles is prioritized at the expense the whole rest of the world.

        • +5

Post a link where Nintendo have said they are raising their switch 2 from the original launch price in Australia then. Like I said the other companies are but to the best of my knowledge Nintendo hasnt, only in the US they raised the price of the accessories to counter the tariff.

        • -4

Regardless, (profanity) move and the result should be that they alienate other regions as well.
Besides, they're price gouging on a console that's going to be easy to emulate. ⚓

          • +3

@Rick Sanchez: I dont think the console price is that bad for a handheld hybrid console tbh but the game prices are a bit steep, the good thing is they also hold their value when you sell them. So many people complaining about the switch 2 yet Sony just jacked their console that is 5 years old up in price again….then we have Nvidea which pretty much are the pinnacle of gamer gouging.

            • -3

@Spendmore: It's a very simple answer, Nintendo has gained much more hate than the other companies, it's why we see more hate against them compared to the other 2. It's still very much there for the other 2, it's just not as strong and fierce since there's just more Nintendo haters.

              • +1

@WinterStar: I think its just trendy to bash them, there cant be that much hate they totally outsell anything else on the market.

              • +1

@WinterStar: I've had most Nintendo consoles. Played every single Mario and zelda game. Have only enjoyed a few games on Sony and Xbox consoles, and always return to Nintendo games.

You can be a fan and still be critical of something.

            • @Spendmore: Btw I was agreeing with you. And yes, the upfront cost of the console, whatever. Components are expensive. It's the price of games, just feels greedy. If the rise was necessary, I'm not sure how they were managing selling switch 1 games for much lower.
Let's not get started on NVIDIA 🤕

              • +1

@Rick Sanchez: Could be worse, SNES games used to be $120. With inflation that’s about $270 in today’s money.

    • +8

Only half of them even bother to vote too lol, it's ridiculous that world economies rely on this nonsense

    • +2

IIRC, Sanity had a voucher code running which expired about 12 hours after the Switch2 preorder was added to their site, really seemed like an oversight on their part. (The RRP hasn't increased).

I'm still not sure if all those preorders from Sanity will actually be fulfilled.

      • +2

I've called the other day and told my order was ok and waiting for it to be released. Will report back when it actually ships out.

        • I've got my fingers crossed for you.

        • +2

Sounds like you'll be another one of their unsecured creditors

    • I ordered with this link, pretty sure it was a site error from Sanity but they’re honoring the orders for those who got in.

      • +1

Ditto, they confirmed via email that my order still has the go ahead a couple weeks back.

  • Cancelled my EB Games pre-order earlier this week as I was moving to a different suburb.
Now pre-ordered this one from Gamesmen for delivery to work instead.

  • +1

Wait for Black Friday deals. Never buy new release for consoles, phones, tablet basically any electronics

    • +7

…unless you want it during the launch window, of course ;-)

Over the entire life of the first switch the RRP satyed fairly stable, even with an OLED version coming out. Yeah there were deals to be had over that time for sure, but I'm too old to wait for something like this, it's been 8 years since the last Nintendo console launch, I'm excited and am willing to buy at launch. To retain my OzB badge, I bought with HN for the 10% back in gift cards offer. I know HN sucks :-(

    • +1

      Depends for what purpose🏴‍☠️

    • +7

And miss the hype train? It could be another eight years for the next new console. I'll take my thrills where I can get them and I'll be racing as the cow on day 1.

      • -3

Each to its own I guess. I got plenty of backlog on my Ps5, original Switch and many other free games via Epic games on Asus ROG Handheld. To top that off also got 3DS lying around and the arcade gameheld from Anbernic R36s

What I don't have is time. So I'm no rush to buy a new console. The thrill to me is not worth the high price tag.
