    • I am just after the scanning feature as using the Brother laser printer for printing

But toner wise price still reasonable from Amazon AU IMO: https://www.amazon.com.au/67-TRI-Color-Original-Ink-Cartridg…

I know the quality might differ but there are lots of scanning apps on phone or even google drive scan app is relatively decent

        • been using a few different apps for document scanning (btw iOS in-built notes app document scan feature is pretty good)
but the light shading issue is a bit annoying especially scanning at night
so just want a cheap machine to have the job done

          • @littlesoldier:

am just after the scanning feature

Unless scanning a lot, local library may have good scanner with document feeder for use - free. My local does & is almost always available.

Have a Dell wireless printer with good document feeder scanner - only to scan the occasional page. Ink is too expensive to print & often dries up before next print job. Just takes up valuable space!
Now mainly use mobile to scan.

People often throw out good working printer scanners - when upgrading or when ink becomes too expensive.
(Have 2 unused Dell wireless printer feeder scanners, bought long ago for the included ink.)

Check kerbside cleanups or ask around. People would be grateful to have them removed!

The only issue with these inkjet printers is that they eventually becomes plastic waste after a year or so. The inks are expensive and they automatically used up even if you don’t print often.

  • For low volume print households like mine, the monthly ink subscription was excellent: https://www.hp.com/au-en/printers/instant-ink/plans.html?jum…
Having said that, I switched to Brother colour laser during covid and have not looked back.

  • How much are the ink for this, I have a hp printer I have used for years stil works with scanning etc, I got a new about 3 years ago dell which is white at least the colour would match lol.
But curious on the costs of ink for it shd if you can use other ink, and not that done it for a while but does Kmart have ink for this not the official can’t remember top of my head but they used to sell ink that fitted a few different printers

  • I owned a HP printer with the forced Ink subscription and (profanity) this machine with a passion (I did not buy this machine). It's a tribute to e-waste. Do not buy this thing, it's junk. The ink expires quickly and the subscription floods you with ink that goes straight to the bin.

I hate everything this machine stands for.

    • I just read online and people comment not to enrol with HP+ or Instant Ink subscription program, will have a try after setting it up

    • Hate is strong, but all printer manufacturers appear to be the same. They charge so much for replacement cartridges it's simply cheaper to just buy a new printer. It is just so annoying and an extreme waste.

My current printer is a cheap Epson XP2200 and the replacements are more expensive than a new printer. But tried some cheap cartridges from Amazon, and so far are ok, but still bugger all cheaper than a new printer.

However, the worst thing about this total POS, is that even when you set it to B&W, it still uses ink from the colour cartridges. You can't win. Fortunately I don't have to print out too often.

      • most manufacturers of (shavers or) printers are not in the business of selling (shavers or) printers.
They are in the business of selling (replacement blades, or) ink/toner….

        • Same as power tool multi tool accessories too.

  • Every so often I find I need to scan 20 or so pages in a bundle. This thing looks like it will fit under what I have the 'been going for ages, cheap to get toner for' small B/W Brother laser printer sitting on, and mean I don't have to keep the old flat bed scanner I have - that dates back to early this century….
BUT - that depends on this thing working as a scanner even if the ink is used / dried out from lack of use.
Anyone know if that is the case?
Given this is HP, I'm not at all confident

  • HP is the EA of the printer world. Instant ink is such a ripoff

  • Friends don't let friends buy inkjet printers.

  • Assuming you can still scan when the ink cartridges are empty it's okay ?

    • this is what i am hoping, i am just after the scanning feature

    • HP got a lot of bad news for this last year or two. Did they change it to be consumer friendly? Highly unlikely. Non skip-able ads before printing are more likely.

    • Yes still can use it as scanner.

    • confirmed that scan works even without ink cartridges installed

I only install the ink cartridges during printer setup (and skip HP+ and instant ink subscription)
then after printer is connected to Wifi, I remove the cartridges and still able to scan to computer (via wifi)

  • HP is a piece of s***. their chip prevents me from refilling my own cartridge. and I cant use the printer even if I have 1 full colour cartridge.

    DO NOT BUY HP PRINTERS.

HP is the worst possible company to go to for a printer. They have recently pushed a firmware update in March 2025 that bricks HP printers in the name of security, and then offered coupons to affected customers telling them to buy a new printer. HP is practically running a scam operation at this point.

  • oh god hp

  • The subscription can be good value for money if printing lots of full colour photos. Milk it for the first 3 months free by selecting the max plan and print your entire library of photos free. Downgrade before the free period expires.

A bit annoying they keep hiking monthly fees though.

  • just get an Epson ecotank, ink lasts for ages and is dirt cheap,

  • Picked up this new printer in the morning
    and followed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLxLSMwiJY4

Successfully setup the printer without activating in HP+ and Instant Ink subscription
removed the cartridges from the printer still works with scanning
tested and able to scan document to computer (to Mac)
