  • I have never seen these before - is it like a standalone in-sink-erator?

    • +3

This breaks and dehydrate your food waste and turn them into fertiliser. Unlike the under-sink erator that crushes everything and washed down to the drain.

      • In 2025 I expect that all smart foot waste disposal units deploy AI. How smart is this really?

A similar product to this won a choice shonky award: https://www.choice.com.au/shonky-awards/hall-of-shame/shonky….

I'm not sure this will be any better than composting or using a green waste bin.

Edit: I think the use case for machines like these us very niche, for most people they will just be a waste of electricity and bench space.

  • I’ve read the description. It reduces smell.

But how does it convert food into fertilizer? What does it actually do?

    • Have added a video in description, these electric composter is suppose to dehydrate food waste, turn them into fertilizer

Just get a worm farm or compost bin. After doing so for years it truly boggles my mind thinking how much organic waste is just put in the general bin.

  • Regards FOGO bins. I only half fill the indoor bin bag then triple bag it to put in the outdoor bin. Seems to keep smell and bugs mostly under control.

    • +2

Wow, that's a lot of bags you will be using. These bags ain't cheap!

      • Our Council replaces them for free. Having said that it gives us only the flimsiest compostable bags. I am sure there are better quality ones.

        • My council only gives out 1 roll (300ocs) per household per year…

  • Does anyone know how long the process to become fertilizer will be?

    • "Capable of reducing up to 90% of your food waste volume in just four to six hours". However, the substance produced is NOT fertilizer and NOT compost. It is organic material that will still take up to 4 weeks in the garden to break down into compost.

Not sure how much power this device uses to dehydrate the food waste. Hence why a related product received a CHOICE Shonky award.

Most of your councils aren't forcing you to separate the organic waste.
Unfortunately in Victoria I have copped this.
I don't think there are policing it yet but I'm sure they will figure out how to revenue raise

they should be fining idiots who cannot comprehend how to recycle

every time there's recycling bins out, you see people putting foam in them

      • Probably one of my bins, for 2 months my builder during our reno was putting building waste and all sorts of crap in the recycling bin

  • Put a couple of pieces of cardboard from pizza or delivery boxes at the bottom of the green bin and then keep a small bucket (or icecream tub) in the kitchen and rinse.
You can also use junk mail at the bottom of the bin.

    • yep.. and i also put some of the stuff in the freezer and empty that into the green bin once a week

Just get a dog and you'll never have food scraps again.

    • +3

      Just vet bills.

      • +1

nah, you just get another dog

  • If you are in Brisbane you can get $200 rebate on these from the council. One time, one per household. https://www.insinkerator.com.au/brisbanerebate

  • With the FOGO, try to freeze some bags earlier in the week if possible (for food that isn't already off e.g. fruit/veg peels), and then chuck it in the FOGO bin on bin night. That way it's not in the bin all week and only overnight (plus only just defrosting until it gets collected in the morning). Double bagging also helps and only half filling it (if your council provides the bags!).
