Just received an email from mobileciti about their early end of financial year deals. 20% off coupon MCYF20 and 10% off coupon MCFY applies to selected items. As I'm still hunting for a sports smartwatch, I noticed that you can get this Amazfit T-Rex 3 for $327.20 after the discount. It's currently selling for ~$400 on Amazon and other marketplaces. The watch was released late last year, and can probably be described as poor man's Garmin fenix. Lots of reviews on YouTube.

  • Ripper price for this watch!

  • Good for run tracking (and Runkeeper integration)? Currently use Runkeeper on my mobile and it would be nice not to have to carry my phone sometimes.

    • Amazfit does not appear to be listed under Runkeeper's supported wearable devices, and I suspect that it needs to do a manual export from Zepp (Amazfit's mobile app) and then import into Runkeeper.

    poor man's Garmin fenix.

    OzBargain Garmin Fenix.

    • +5

Maybe just a subset of OzBargain. There appears to be 18 ozbargain subscribers to Garmin fenix 8, a product that doesn't have a deal yet and retails for $1,400+

      • +1

20 subscribed as of 2.33pm. 2 more WP users since your post.

        • +2

fenix 7 was released in mid-Jan 2022, and got first deal posted less than a month later. fenix 8 was released in late-Aug 2024, and 9 months later — we still have not seen one single deal posted. I guess it's due to the ridiculous RRP. I guess those 20 subscribers might have to wait for a while.

@scotty: I have been a garmin user since Fenix 5. Was able to get good deals so far. Currently have 955 solar… also bought on deal. I prefer forerunners over fenix for their lightweight but almost same features. There is no MIP display for their newly released forerunner 970 and they priced it ridiculous as well.

  • Can’t seem to find the watch dimensions on even its official website.

    • +3

Open official product page, scroll down to "Technical Specifications", and

Dimensions (without heart rate base): 48.5x48.5x13.75mm
      Weight (without strap): 68.3g

      Display Size: 1.5"

I still have a T-REX first gen bought on a deal found here… as much as I want to upgrade I can't find a reason to as it still hold battery for a couple of weeks and tracks everything I need, sleep, HR, etc… I wish my one stopped working haha..
I also got compliments a few times for it..

    • +1

Same, mine is a trex pro and it's been bullet proof and looks awesome with the tactix watch face.

    • I had the original Bip for 6-7 years and it just wouldn’t die. I ended up giving it away so I could get a Garmin haha

  • +1

    If only LTE…

    • -1

You wouldn't get such good battery life if it had LTE.

      • Yes but you could get notifications away from your phone…

huawei gt 5 pro a much better option for around $350 when on sale $400 when not and its worth the extra.

    Sapphire glass scratch resistant
    Titanium build
    faster processor
dual band 6 satellite positioning system
    more battery life
more accurate SPO2, EKG and heart sensor (medical grade same as apple watch) see this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NS8XM5fmHHQ

having owned an amazfit in the past I found their update and software support to be terrible, huawei have added strava syncing in australia now to their native app too so its like getting a top teir garmin for $350

    • Link to where I can get it at $400?

    • Seems to be more like $500-$800 range and 5atm vs 10atm water resistance of the Trex is a deal breaker for me.

      • -1

It’s literally $380 in the link above dude ?

Check the times, was posted 4 minutes after my comment…

    • Here's T-Rex 3 review by the same YouTuber — the HRM and GPS are still rated well. They have really lifted its game over the last 2-3 years, so your past Amazfit experience might not apply to their current devices.

T-Rex 3 is really designed as a rugged outdoor watch. It too has dual band GPS, up to 27 days of typical use (vs 9 days of GT5 Pro), 42 hours of continuous GPS (vs some unknown figure from GT5 Pro). Huawei GT5 Pro does feel a lot more premium and has more health sensors. I guess it depends on what you are using the watch for.

      • This is true and I was wrong on the battery life front didn’t realise this was the rugged one but purely on build quality and software support like ongoing updates Huawei have it for me. Amazfit is a tiny company in comparison which push updates once a year from past experience.

      • @scotty Mind if I ask if you bought one and what tipped you over? Contemplating this versus a second hand Fenix 6 or 7. Thanks in advance

        • +1

No I didn't buy one. I have purchased multiple Amazfit watches before (original Bip, my wife is now wearing the Active 2), and I am waiting for the global release of Balance 2 which is more of an all-rounder, whereas T-Rex 3 is a heavier rugged outdoor sports watch.

I am wearing a Garmin now but won't be getting another one. They are already expensive, and now extra features cost more in subscriptions. Garmin might excel in software, but others are catching up quickly.

    • As a current GT3 watch owner, no way would I recommend a Huawei watch to someone else. The basics work reasonably well, but my experience has resulted in some critical bugs. The issues I have with it are:

Poor native Strava integration. Yes, it exists - but:

      a) I had to create a new Huawei account in a different region (Singapore) to my own (Australia) because for some reason Huawei doesn't support native Strava syncing in Australia?

      b) The inbuilt Strava syncing is pretty broken. It syncs reliably, but that's about the only positive. The tracking data is transferred, but it transfers by default as a cycling activity (even if you set it as a run on your watch) and has no heart rate data (and if you're cycling, no power data either). For me, having heart rate and power data on Strava is critical as I also use another device for my cycling (a Garmin Edge 530 computer) - so I use Strava as a third party fitness platform to see both my cycling and running.

      c) This is is solved somewhat by the third-party app Health Sync. However, it only syncs every 15 minutes, doesn't include power data for cycling (but does include HR), and seems to not track pauses correctly so pace/segment data is often incorrect (it seems to write some data during the pause time). Weirdly, it displays fine on Huawei Health, but is then messed up on Strava.

Pace, when shown on the watch, is smoothed over too long of a time period. It seems to be smoothed over a period of ~10-12 seconds which makes it very difficult to track intervals or general changes in pace, as it's around 12 seconds until you get a true indication of the change. Some level of smoothing is sensible but that length is over-the-top to me as it takes too long to check a change in pace. This review from The Run Testers also covers this issue.

Power data for left-sided power meters is not doubled - at least for my Favero Assioma Uno pedals. Cycling computers (and other watches) can recognise that it's a left-side only power meter and double the number accordingly for the full power figure. There is a workaround here, in that in the Favero app I can set the data output to be doubled (for devices like this that don't recognise it properly as left side only), but that would screw it up for my Garmin Edge cycling computer. And, as above, the power numbers don't come across to Strava.

You can't seem to customise the main screen for cycling to show power - it only shows on an alternative screen.

Syncing routes from Strava to the watch is not easy - I have to download it on my desktop, save in a Dropbox folder, then upload it in the HH phone app from the Dropbox folder. Compare that to Garmin (and others) that support native syncing from Strava routes.

HR data is only written to the file every 5 seconds (which seems strange as it updates every second on the watch). Most other watches write every second.

      • The Strava issue they fixed in the native app in Aus you don’t have to do any of this

        • Oh, excellent. I'll have to give it another try now - I wouldn't have tried in the last year or so. Do you know if it also sends cadence across for running and cycling?

    • I actually watched both of those when buying. The same guy reviews the T-rex 3 after the GT5 Pro. In his data graph here for heart rate tracking he actually puts the T-rex 3 above the GT5 Pro.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlCVYrZEA6A - see approx 14:40

Either way, both great watches. I have the T-rex 3 and what a difference compared to my old GTR 4.. it actually tracks my heart rate properly and easily in a workout.

  • I went with an Amazfit Balance with grey fabric strap a few months ago for about $225 - a bit older but has the same software stack on a dressier profile. Nabbed a good black leather quickswap strap off Ali for when office aesthetics are needed.

Very happy, about 21 days battery with notifications off, 11 days with all the annoyances on.

    • Im at 15 days since charging and down to 5% battery on the Trex 3 with all the default tracking turned on and a few long workouts logged over that time.

21 days is phenomenal. Amazfit have nailed the battery life.

  • Could anyone confirm if this works with Alltrails app? Thanks in advance

    • I don't think there's a direct integration with Alltrails app. However you can export the route from Alltrails to a GTX file, open the GTX file with Zepp (the Amazfit app) on the phone, and then have that sync with the phone. You'll then get turn by turn navigation with map on the watch.

Are they trying to be a jack of all trades with their watch face - try to woo both round & square with octagonal, and winning none over?

    • Its a matter of personal taste. I think it looks great in person

  • Recently received prior to this deal, bought for general fitness monitoring and hiking, upgrade from a Sunto 5.
Everything I use/need works great, no lag or delays, great screen, maps, gps etc.

Havn't tested the full battery life yet which is reported upward of 21 days.
Zepp app working great, good sync with Health Connect (Android) and Strava.

Only con so far is Zepp app doesnt support route creation. will need to import a route gpx (alltrails etc) or create in komoot / strava (Zepp account linking), easy enough.
Also have not found a GPS breadcrumb mode for track back routing.

I dont have a Garmin Fenix, but for 1/3rd the price it fits what i was looking for.

Note I ordered the Lava but they contacted me after and said they had none in stock but never removed it from the site.

  • Oh, I have the T-Rex and the T-rex 2… Very impressed with both of them… Looks like it's time for an upgrade!

Only downside is the Zepp app that has a tendency to spam you with crap advertising around certain holidays and I have not found a way or tuning it off, so I just have to mute the app.

  • Has anyone tried this for freediving/spearfishing?

    • +2

Yeah mate, ive got it and if your in the market for a dive computer it does a great job (plus great battery life and fitness tracking: blows any other comparable freedive watch out of the water for the price point).

Has 2 types of surface interval modes; multiple of previous dive time (2x/3x/4x etc) and a preset breath up time (eg. 3min). GPS tracking is activated in workout modes so you can track where you've swam (need to have hand close to surface)… you should be aware that you currently cannot mark spots, but you may be able to make a janky work around with the "my location app".. it does activate a screen lock in water activities (surfing, swimming freediving) which limits the ability to click the screen to "log" data. This means you can only scroll up/down with dedicated buttons and you cannot mark locations natively. Hoping they will release an update that fixes this.

If youre on the fence i would say get it.

      • Ive been using my fenix 5x with 3rd party freediving app, got the new garmin epix only to find out its depth sensor is basically locked to 3m.
Might give it a go. Thanks a lot for your help!

        • Ah thats super frustrating. Can verify this depth sensor will go beyond 3m lol have logged past 20m.

Just noticed there is no built-in google assistance in this watch which is handy when you want to control smart devises. Like before entering hosue can tell may watch to turn on cooling/heating.

    • If your running home assistant there is an app for it. Not sure about Google Home though

    • amazon alexa supported?

      • Amazfit watches have "Zepp Flow" as default voice assistant, but can also be linked to Amazon to use Alexa. Unfortunately I don't think you can use Google Assistant or Gemini.

  • Noob question but why is it half price on Kogan?

    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/fluxa-t-rex-3-gps-smartwatch-fo…

    • +2

Nowhere is the brand "Amazfit" mentioned on Kogan's site, because it's a knock off. You can also find other "T-Rex 3" for cheaper on AliExpress just like you can find "S25 Ultra" phone for under $200 there as well.

Kogan also sells the actual T-Rex 3 but for $409.95

      • Thanks mate for the clear and crisp answer.
