Monitor for a Mac Mini

Chasing a new monitor for a Mac mini. currently have an old 2012 iMac 27", looking to stay with same screen size. Will be mostly office use with moderate video playback.

Have been looking at these two options. The MSI has more ports, higher watts for charging devices but only 60 hz, The Dell monitor has less ports but does have 120hz.

  • The Dell is available for $399.41 per @Christown… if price is important?

    • No price isn’t really an issue as I have access to discounts as JB

      • If price wasn't an issue you'd get an Apple Studio Display 27" 5K

Apple doesn’t discount anymore than 5%. But $2.5k for a monitor is not worth it IMO

          • @kiwimex: So price is an issue but maybe you prefer mid-range?

@sumyungguy: Um well I listed two options, you could have stayed on topic and offered advice on those. If you can’t do that, not interested in your waffle.

@kiwimex: Sorry, I didn't see there was a question in your post. One is $400, the other $600; not directly comparable options. Go with the one which gets you the biggest discount. I myself have a 4K Dell and a 5K iMac; macOS is optimised for 5120 x 2880 so the Dell isn't great. Regret I'm pretty much the only person to comment on your low effort post.

                • @sumyungguy: What's the issue when using 4k on a 5K iMac?

This is a public forum, not a paid consultancy. Maybe ask ChatGPT? If you can’t do that, he is not interested in your attitude.

  • Any monitor your want, though Macs typically ship with a higher quality IPS display. Something big and high resolution would fit the bill. High frame rate is also nice.

You can probably use your existing old imac as a monitor, there are kits available to modify it which saves it from land-fill and you get to use your existing hi quality monitor for around $300 instead of pasying more than double that for a similar quality replacement

    • That looks pretty complicated, and something might go wrong or not work as well as required. I think it would be wiser to sell the iMac for $100, and get a modern 4K screen. That 2012 iMac is only QHD.

    • No speaker support is a major downside.

In my opinion the MSI is ugly, while the Dell looks pretty nice. Aesthetics can be important if you like working in a nice space. I'd definitely get the Dell with the 120Hz if the price is similar. I have the older (60Hz) version of that monitor, and I really like it for my Mac Mini. But I haven't tried the MSI, so it may have some pros over the Dell.

Check the Dell Outlet store, better bang for your buck. I use a 32 inch 4K screen with my Mac. Purists will go on about native resolution but it really works totally fine, don't see any drawback.

  • Ended up ordering the Dell.

    Thanks everyone who offered advice

    • I'm in the same boat, what Dell Monitor did you end up choosing? Any good? Also are you using the BetterDisplay app on the Mac Mini?

  • Apple Studio Display for 27" or Apple Pro Display XDR for 32".
