For those on android, I believe Samsung is pulling Apple shenanigans by locking out any other brand from using it

Yes came here to say exactly this. Game changer.

      • +9

        legend!
but still, I want to boycott Samsung for this move

      • +2

I suspect it wont be around for long. Samsung will prob try suing

      • so is SmartTag2 4-Pack different to UTAG?

        • +2

uTag is not a tracker. It's used to make SmartTags work with other phones

          • @shxhshzhz: So it's some kind of protocol?

Recently used airtags in our luggage with my wife's iPhone and it was amazing and I want that too on my android!

            • +11

@MrBillions: SmartTag2 is designed to work with a Samsung phone only, because it relies on Samsung phone network.
uTag is an unofficial app to break this restriction, and it's not on Google Play Store.
Whether the app is safe or not, and whether Samsung would block it in the future, are at your own risk.

              • @AsukaST: Why not using something like Chipolo One Point. They officially support Android Find My Device. Meaning it works with all andorid phones and have much wider user base that will scan the tag.

AFAIK Samsung SmartTag can only be scanned by Samsung Devices (and maybe the UTAG users mentioned above)

                • @OzBestDeal: That one doesn't have ultra wide band AFAIK.

                • +1

@OzBestDeal: ive used chipolo in the past, quite some years ago. Battery was limited and getting a connection to the tag was tricky.

I use samsung tags on my personal stuff, works okay, i mainly just use it to find stuff in my house

I sew an airtag into my son's shoe in case he goes off wandering. Apple is the automatic choice for this, no one else has the coverage that they do

                  • @cannedhams: Do you expect your son to go beyond Samsung's coverage, which ranked better? Even Tile has excellent coverage (being much longer than Apple$ tag ;)

      • I have a Motorola and utag didn't work with the Smart tag 2 I bought unfortunately. There is nothing wrong with the tag as it works with my wife's Samsung phone.

      • +1. Working adequately with my Motorola Edge 30 Ultra.

Great price, i used price beat @ow last time this was on sale for extra discount

Doesn't really help you find them when you're looking for them though, does it?

        • +3

Dog got lost and the vet called and said where it had been handed in

          • -7

@Tleyx: My cat goes out after breakfast and only comes home in evening, I really want to know where she is going all day. Guess I'm acting as typical dad I guess

            • +3

@hopper: Anyone that lets their cat roam all day or night deserves to be molested by large four legged animals.

            • +2

@hopper: Please don't let your cat free roam. It's not OK.

Brought this to my China's trip. Totally useless, it seems that nobody using Samsung phones there :D.

    • -3

Of course, they say the will defeat the US and take back Taiwan but every Chinese uses iphone (or wants one if they can't afford it). lmao

      • +6

Because iPhones are made in China and Samsungs are made in Vietnam and India by a Korean company; China is unfriendly with all three nations.

    • +2

      try korea

    • Can you explain your comment. I'm lost

      • @magnitude Samsung is a Korean company, so the Samsung trackers will work better there lol.

  • -1

Useless product. Takes long time to update location and sometimes doesn't even do even when there are 10 samsung phones around it (my son has it in his school bag and location is not updated when he is travelling in his school bus)

    • +2

Samsung uses an opt in setting where users have to turn on offline finding in their phone's settings to allow the SmartTag's location to be shared through the phone.

It's unlikely that school kids would turn this on or know what it is.

      • +6

That's seems like a good way to limit the usefulness of device and locating network.

      • Forgot about other children's phone, it doesn't even connect to my own son's phone and update frequently.
While this may have use for luggage, cats and dogs, I find it useless if you want it for tracking humans. For that I would recommend Life360 app. Super accurate and updated with location turned on.

        • +6

While this may have use for luggage, cats and dogs, I find it useless if you want it for tracking humans.

Because it's not advertised as a human tracker. It's for belongings.

          • -5

@shxhshzhz: Irrespective of what it is marketed as, if it cannot update location in real time even with handsets around it, how useful it is?

            • +1

@amsaini15: It has privacy functionality built in to prevent that specific use. The Air tag does too. I'm not sure to what degree these vary in practice.

            • +1

@amsaini15: It's useful for lots of things that aren't real time tracking, eg tracking luggage.

If you want real time tracking, you need a device that is actually designed for that, which these aren't.

    • +3

The location doesn't update regularly to use these as a real time tracker. That's not their intended purpose. The battery would deplete in hours if they were constantly pinging devices.

If you want real time tracking put an old phone in old mates school bag with a cheap Sim and install Life360 or similar.

      • When I say real time tracking, it should update when I select option on the App. If the update is still 20 mins ago and doesn't want to update, that where the issue is for me. I am not hoping for self pinging every second.

Yep that's what I have got that now (Life360) .

        • +2

Unless the tag is within BT distance of your phone, you have no way of forcing it's location to update. Once it's outside of the range of your phone, it's location will only update when the tag pings a nearby device. You can't request it to do that. It'll do it based on it's algorithm only.

Again, these tags aren't designed to do what you're expecting them to do.

      • +1

Google maps location sharing works great too

  • +10

Have been using this for trips to Japan, Fiji, Turkey, UK, Hong Kong, Mongolia, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan etc.
    Working perfectly.

    • Armenia any good to visit?

  • +2

This is great for kids, bags and other valuables. Tracking and location history have been excellent.

    • until the kid somehow loses the tag

  • +1

    thanks

  • -1

So what's the verdict. Does this work or not???

    • +2

The deal or the device? The tags work well, as long as you understand what they are designed to do, which isn't real time tracking.

  • Anyone have experience with theft prevention?
I want to get it but not if my theifs are just going to get a stalking warning notification as soon as they head home…

  • Not sure if Samsung IoT network is larger than Apple's.

Looks like to me Apple is having a larger network all over places in the world.

    • +2

Apple best, Samsung 2nd best, but for whatever weird reason the google find my devices always perform poorly in comparison .

This is from beginning of the year so worth checking for more current articles https://www.androidauthority.com/tested-google-find-my-devic…

      • Great recent article. Thanks

      • So for whatever reason I have airbags, chipolo one point, and tile.

And surprisingly chipolo one point isn't as bad as the initial reviews said it was. If you don't have Samsung id probably be happy to buy more chipolo one point.

Apple just needs to open up their airtags eco system…

Arrived today. Just set them up with my Tab S7 FE as my phone is a Pixel. Easy setup after a quick firmware update. Thanks OP.
