I've got an old Clara HD which I love, mostly for the ability to borrow library books via Overdrive.

Is there any real reason to upgrade?

    • +5

If your old one is still working fine, probably not. The new Clara BW probably has a bit more memory, a slightly better screen and is a bit faster, but if you're happy your current one it's probably not worth an upgrade. I've got a 7 year old Kobo Aura H2O which I use every day and will continue to do so until it dies. I just wanted the Clara BW because it's a bit smaller than that so I can use it a bit easier while I'm traveling.

    USB-C port 👏

Kobos are amazing. I could never go back to Kindle.

    • Keen to hear your thoughts about this. Looking to get a reader for my wife but not sure what the pros and cons of each are. I know I would likely jailbreak the kindle for her so what would be the difference at that point. Is it just a software/DRM thing or something physically different about the devices?

      • +10

Kobo has public library integration built-in (Overdrive/Libby). You could never buy a book again (I mean you will but you wouldn't have to). Side loading is painless. Amazon's goal is to sell you books or subscriptions so they don't make borrowing or side loading easy.

        • +1

Also, with Audible being owned by Amazon they are introducing audiobooks being read by AI. I can't imagine that are any good and unsurprisingly the subscription cost doesn't go down despite not paying for a real person to read them anymore.

        • +1

Public libraries in Aus have integration with overdrive/libby? How does it work?

          • @mordinhoz: you log in with overdrive on the Kobo
then you use Libby on your phone/computer to borrow a book.
Then back on the Kobo, you "sync" and itll come down. Really easy.

        • Amazon does too but only in the US. You can sign up to US libraries and borrow books that way.

    • Kindles can now be jailbroken again, to use the vastly superior KOReader.

      • I do this with a decade old Paperwhite, works amazing, I have no reason to upgrade (other than USB C).

Although I'm fairly sure with Kobo you can install koreader without jailbreaking.

        • does this mean you can now use kindle to borrow library books?

          • @fredblogs: If there's a program you can sideload after jailbreaking, probably. I'm not sure myself, I just pirate everything.

        • Id never heard of KOReader till this thread.
Picked up my Aura HD and installed it fairly easily.

          thanks!

  • Same code doesn't seem to work on the Kobo colour range unfortunately.

    • Bugger, that looks like the only one it doesn't apply to. It looks like the code can be applied to one of the Clara Colours with a cover, either $290, $295 or $299 less 20% which is probably ok if you need a cover as well. I didn't look at the colour ones, I only read books on my ereader so I didn't want a colour version.

  • Left mine on the plane 😭

Edit: older micro usb one. Hmmm…

    • The airline couldn't get it back to you? Did someone steal it?

      • +2

Yeah I tried to ask and they emailed me saying they’d check but I guess someone grabbed it at some point.

Anyway, I ordered an upgrade, yay!

  • +1

Not sure if other models suffer this but my Libra Colour uses a random number generator to return to my last read page, not all the time but often. So much so I am in the habit of taking a photo of the page I am at when i close the book, if I remember, so i can find it again. This happens maybe 50% of the time

This is for books side loaded fom Calibre. I have no idea wtf is going on but its super annoying. My kindle never did that.

    • +2

Mine does that, but it's because my toddler unlocks it, plays with it, and then leaves it.
There is a button on that jumps you back to the last page you were on, even if you navigate away. That's come in handy a lot.

      • +1

My kobo was doing that at one point. Iearnt to dog ear the page (tap top right)

    • Never had that problem with my Libra Colour. All of my books are side loaded with Calibre also. Are you using the Kobo Extended plugin to auto convert to kepub?

  • I have this device and happy to answer any questions.

    • +7

How much money do you make per annum?

    • What is 18 divided by a half plus 6?

      • +8

The answer to the great question of life, the universe and everything

    • Is the Libby integration painless? Thinking about one for my wife, who wants to be able to borrow trash romantasy without me (and calibre) being involved in the process.

      • +5

Yes. Painless if borrowing from one library anyway as you can stay logged into that library on the device, then anything you borrow on Libby will sync with your device. Slightly more painful if borrowing from another library as you need to either log out and in to the new library or transfer the book another way (eg Adobe digital editions).

        • Amazing, ty

  • Keen on the kobo Libra colour but doesn’t look like it is part of this sale.

    • +4

      here

Only available in white though, huge dirt magnet though due to the textured back and buttons

  • +2

I love mine. If you only read B&W books, this is better than the colour one, as it's sharper.

  • Kindle Paperwhite or this? Can I load my own EPUB or PDF books onto both?

    • +1

Don't think you can use Kindle Unlimited on the Kobo, if that matters to you. You can send epubs directly to Kindle with the Send to Kindle service.

      • +1

I have a kindle that I dearly love but kindle unlimited is possibly the worst subscription service i've used. It may vary based on what you read but in a free 3 month subscription I didn't find a single book I wanted to read.

  • I had an Aura H2O, and when that broke bought one of these, but returned it almost immediately. The difference between a 6"7 and 6" screen doesn't seem like much, but I found the new smaller size just wasn't big enough. I don't really travel with it though, just read from home, so I never have a need to slip it into a coat pocket etc. If you have smaller hands and/or travel a lot, maybe this is fine for you.

I ended up going with a now unavailable Kindle, because I wanted a 7" form factor in black and white, with buttons. I don't think this combo exists in any range anymore, which is frustrating.

    • Kindle Oasis - I wonder what happened. Do they prepare new generation?

      • It's been discontinued sadly.

        • It's too expensive and killed by libra

  • +1

got this for $230 a few months ago, great device and pretty easy to transfer over books from your PC. Battery seems to last forever.

  • Sold out during check out… Zzzz

    • +1

      there were only 15 wtf

    • +1

Maybe Kobo is working on a new version and this is the first round of clearance, hoping for a newer model with more ram

    • +1

This is the one I actually got (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/356451651568) because I needed a case as well. It was $20 more before discount, so I think it ended up around $216 with the case. EBay still shows 3 in stock as of now

  • +1

With cover is still available with 55$ coupon (just bought)

    • They just cancelled the order. FFS 2nd eBay 'deal' cancelled

      • @sapiens Which one did you buy? What was the reason given for cancellation of the order?

        • kobo BW with Green Cover - 'Out of Stock' - yet they're selling the same thing for the same price, still, listing is still live and showing stock

          • +1

@Sapiens: That's strange! 3 more Users bought it since last night way long after you bought it, all likely to be cancelled. Just wondering if they did not mean to discount it and hence cancelling the orders.

          • +1

@Sapiens: Exact same item for me, and same message from a rep about it being cancelled, stock issues, etc. Their website mentions there should be new stock in maybe two weeks so I've asked if I can get that with the discount price, but not really expecting that to work. https://www.digidirect.com.au/kobo-clara-black-and-white-sle…

          • @Sapiens: Damn, that's the exact one I bought this morning. No notice of my order being cancelled yet though.

  • +3

I got this device at launch for $193.50 (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/841137) and I'm really pleased with it.

  • Can you still read with this without the light turn on?

    • +1

Yes, as long as there's sufficient ambient lighting.

      • +1

why do you need any ambient lighting?

        • +1

          To read the words.

  • +1

I have this e-reader and absolutely love it.

  • We’ve been a two kindle household for years, then I drowned mine in a backpack and used it as an opportunity ti have a foot in each camp. Most books arre… ‘acquired’, amazon books are generally cheaper that kobo, and library book titles (the driver for crossing the floor) are often unavailable (or come with waiting periods - and need to be read within a given timeframe). I still believe that one of each is the way to go. Oh, one thing i do dislike about the Kobo (libra 2) is the low battery warning - Kindle seems to last about 3 or 4 evenings (of say 20min reading). The Kobo goes “Oh Im gonna need a top up soo…”…

    • which one would you get first?
